Mangetsuji Temple with famous Ukimido (Floating Temple) Hall, Katata Ward, Shiga Prefecture

Mangetsuji Temple is a zen temple located in Katata Ward of Shiga Prefecture (Kansai Region) in Japan. Mangetsuji Temple is known for the Ukimido Hall which is built on the shores of lake Biwa (Biwa-ko) on the water. When the water is full this hall seems like floating on the water.

Mangetsuji is a small temple but the gorgeous views of the Lake Biwa and it's surroundings makes it a very popular temple to visit in Shiga Prefecture. The Ukimido is said to house about 1000 Amida Buddha statues in a small space.

The beautiful views of Shiga Prefecture and Lake Biwa, were subject to eight paintings to the famous Ukiyo-e Painter of Japan, Hiroshige. These paintings are known as Eights Views of Omi. Omi being the ancient name for Shiga Prefecture. One of the paints features the Geese returning home on Lake Biwa with the Ukimido Hall in the background. It is a beautiful painting along with the other seven views of Omi.

【Enryaku-ji(延暦寺)】
Enryaku-ji is a Tendai monastery located on Mount Hiei in Ōtsu, overlooking Kyoto. It was founded in 788 during the early Heian period (794-1185).[1] The temple complex was established by Saichō (767–822), also known as Dengyō Daishi, who introduced the Tendai sect of Mahayana Buddhism to Japan from China. Enryaku-ji is the headquarters of the Tendai sect and one of the most significant monasteries in Japanese history. As such, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities). The founders of Jōdo-shū, Sōtō Zen, and Nichiren Buddhism all spent time at the monastery. Enryaku-ji is also the center for the practice of kaihōgyō (aka the marathon monks).

Shinnyodo is a temple of the Tendai Sect, built in 984 by a priest from the important Enryakuji Temple. Located out-of-the-way area of Kyoto, Shinnyodo is famous for a beautiful autumn color, which offers lovely fall colors usually around late November, but still remains relatively less crowded.

The temple's halls were destroyed during the Onin War (1467-1477), but fortunately its principle image of Amida Buddha was saved. After being moved to some different locations, this image was brought back to the present location in 1693 when the temple was rebuilt. Today, Shinnyodo's premises encompass quite a large area containing multiple buildings, including a three-storied pagoda. Most of the temple grounds are free to enter, but an admission fee is required to enter the inner chamber of the main hall and to see the gardens of the temples.

Ukimido Mangetsuji Temple - Shiga - 満月寺 浮御堂 - 4K Ultra HD

Ukimido is located by the beautiful shores of Lake Biwako, just 30 minutes away from the center of Kyoto. Ukimido, is also known as the floating temple hall at Mangetsuji Temple, and is famous for being featured as one of the Eight Views of Omi, wild geese returning home at Katata.

Today’s structure of Ukimido is a recreation that was erected in 1937 and then underwent repairs in 1982, yet it fully retains the atmosphere of the original construction.

The legend has it that during the Heian period (794 - 1185) the Monk Genshin (also Enshin Sozu), every night saw a suspicious light from Mount Hieizana in Lake Biwa and decided one day to investigate this phenomenon. He discovered a beautiful, glowing golden Amida Butsu statue. He then later created Ukimido to house 1,000 replica statues as a token of worship.

Tendai Shomyo performance

This is a clip taken of the Tendai sect Shomyo group under Dai Sojo Sakamoto sensei. This particular performance took place at The Cowra Returned Service League Club, NSW Australia.
I am aware that the quality of the video is not very good. I posted it due to the beauty of the Shomyo itself.
