An astonishingly true account of one of the worlds greatest writers and his love affair with a young actress thirty years his junior.

Charles Dickens fell in love with the young actress Nelly Ternan. He was at the height of his success, happily married, one of the best loved authors in the world, Englands most respected moralist, and yet he had this desire that potentially could have ruined him. Only when Nellys son, Geoffrey, resolves to uncover the truth do we find out what really happened. Simon Grays beautifully written and seductive play examines the nature of affairs, wealth, fame and the legacy for the children left behind. This is part love story, part detective story, but all true.

Mark Kilmurry has assembled a stellar cast for this production including Mark Lee as Charles Dickens. Mark Lee last appeared at the Ensemble Theatre in Men of Honour as William Shakespeare. Best known for his role as Archy Hamilton in Peter Weirs Gallipoli Mark has had an extensive career in Australian film, television and on stage. He recently appeared in The Good German at the Seymour Centre and in 2007 made his directorial debut with the feature film, The Bet starring Matthew Newton, Aden Young and Sibylla Budd. Katie Fitchett appears as Nelly Ternan, Dickens muse and obsession, in her second appearance with the Ensemble Theatre following her 2005 debut in Arthur Millers, A View From the Bridge. Katie was most recently seen as Ismene in Company Bs production of Antigone. Drayton Morley is returning to the Ensemble Theatre following performances in Darlinghurst Theatres production of The Memory of Water and Q Theatres Sunday in the Park with George. Gary Baxter was last seen in the Ensembles production of McReele and Lee Jones appeared in the 2008 production The Busy World is Hushed. Olivera Jovanoska makes her professional debut in this production, having graduated from the Ensemble Studios in 2008.

Simon Gray passed away in August 2008 and the Ensemble Theatre dedicates this production to his memory. Simon Gray was a prolific novelist and playwright whose stage works include Life Support, Japes, The Old Masters and Quartermaines Terms. Little Nell was Grays last theatrically produced work prior to his death. The play was produced by the Theatre Royal, Bath in 2007, directed by Sir Peter Hall and is based on the book The Invisible Woman by Claire Tomalin.

Diane (Alexandra Fowler) is a hard-bitten agent determined to see her client, award-winning actor and rising star Mitchell Green (James Millar), make the big time and will do anything to obtain the script that will get him there. The trouble is apart from Mitchell Green having everything he needs to be a star he also has a slight recurring case of homosexuality. When Mitchell falls for Alex (Lindsay Farris), a charming young rent boy with a girlfriend (Alexa Ashton) things start to get complicated. Can Mitchell and Alex have their happy ending or will Diane have to weave a little Hollywood magic of her own?

Director Andrew Doyle has assembled an outstanding cast all making their debut on the Ensemble Theatre stage for this Australian Premiere production. Alexandra Fowler is best known for her long running tv role on Sons and Daughters, and as a singer with The Chantoozies. James Millar co-wrote the musicals The Hatpin and Love Bites, in which he also starred, and most recently appeared in Gutenberg the Musical at Seymour Centre and Jerry Springer The Musical at the Sydney Opera House. Alexa Ashton had a regular role on Home and Away through 2006/7 and appeared in Actors at Work for Bell Shakespeare. Lindsay Farris was first directed by Andrew Doyle in Im Not Rappaport at Theatre Royal for Ensemble in 2004 and has since appeared in many tv series including All Saints, Sea Patrol and Bluewater High.

They are directed by Ensemble's Artistic and Governing Director Sandra Bates AM who recently won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2007 Sydney Theatre Awards.

Ensemble Studios graduate Jennifer Don makes her directorial debut at the Ensemble Theatre with The Sunset Limited. Jennifers interest in directing began when she assisted Hayes Gordon on the graduation of 87. She has assisted Sandra Bates on Death of a Salesman and A Streetcar Named Desire. Jennifer has previously directed productions for Ensemble Studios, The Balmain Loft, Belvoir St, Sydney Short Play Festival, The Harold Park Hotel, Crypt Theatre and The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre. In 2007 she was the recipient of the Emerging Directors Grant affording her the opportunity to observe Sandra Bates on her productions of TRYING and RABBIT HOLE.
Mark Kilmurry (WHITE) is a writer/director/actor who has directed more than a dozen productions at Ensemble Theatre since he was appointed Associate Director in 2005. He has appeared in more than 20 productions for other theatre companies in London, New York and Sydney. His Ensemble Theatre acting credits include Rabbit Hole, The Drawer Boy, Hamlet, Art, The Yalta Game/Afterplay, Aunty and Me and Japes.
Patrick Williams (BLACK) is a Melbourne based actor/singer/presenter who has appeared in the musicals Oh What A Night!, Hair and The Buddy Holly Story, in the stage plays The Saint Plays for MTC, Romeo and Juliet for The Australian Shakespeare Company and Strangers in the Night for Playbox. He was a regular singer on GMA with Bert Newton and was in the John Hillcoat directed Frankie and Johnny.

Eric Weiss (Brandon Burke) has been trying to leave behind his Jewish background for most of his life. A critically acclaimed, but financially unsuccessful author, his semi-autobiographical novel, Brooklyn Boy, has finally propelled him on to the New York Times bestseller list and into literary stardom. Now hes dealing with book signings, a movie producer who wants him to downplay the Jewish content of his screenplay, a young fan in his hotel room who thinks that fiction is like so over, an estranged-wife who isnt interested in reconciliation, an old friend who wants to help him reconnect with his past and a father who cant quite acknowledge his sons success. Eric finally realises he must find a way to reconcile where he has come from with the person he has become.


Anna Crawford directed and musical directed the charming school holiday family production A Year With Frog and Toad at Ensemble Theatre in January 2008. Anna has had a long association with the theatre. She graduated from Ensemble Acting Studios and has appeared in Harp On The Willow, Charitable Intent and Derrida in Love. Anna was awarded a directors fellowship with the theatre in 2008. Brooklyn Boy is her debut mainstage production and she has brought together an experienced cast, all who have worked previously at Ensemble Theatre.

Fast forward to 1952 and a television studio in the grip of the McCarthy-era's censorship and communist witch hunts where talented writer, Tad Rose, is looking for a new and exciting idea for a television play. When he meets script editor and bright spark, Lulu, daughter of Ruby, whose own ambition is to tell her mother's story - whatever it takes - all his dreams seem to have come true.
Playwright Rinne Groff was inspired to write The Ruby Sunrise by the story of Philo T. Farnsworth, the farm boy from Idaho who was amongst the first inventors to produce an electric television transmitter. Groff has made Farnsworth into a girl whose journey to escape an abusive home life leads her to enter the race to invent the first working television and escape her disadvantaged background. Matilda Ridgeway makes her professional debut in the role of Ruby. Amanda Muggleton returns to the Ensemble stage for only the second time in the dual roles of Rubys Aunt Lois and the actress Ethel Reed. Paul Gleeson and Hollie Andrew last worked together on the feature film Somersault and are reunited as a studio executive and television starlet. Glenn Hazeldine last appeared at the Ensemble in Tuesdays With Morrie and Jonathan Prescott played opposite Greta Scacchi in the Ensembles production of Mary Stuart in 2008. Catherine McGraffin has previously appeared in Trying, Charitable Intent and Death of a Salesman for Ensemble Theatre.

Noeline Brown and Barry Creyton first performed together on stage in a Phillip St Revue titled Whats New? 47 years ago in 1962. Their legendary comedy partnership continued when they made their television debut together in The Mavis Bramston Show two years later in 1964. During the late seventies they starred together on television in Blankety Blanks and on stage and tv in The Naked Vicar Show. A decade later in 1987, they appeared together in the Ensemble Theatres premiere production of Double Act written by Barry for the two of them and directed by Sandra, which then toured to Victoria and Tasmania. Two decades later, in 2007 Barry returned from his home in LA to appear with Noeline in the acclaimed Australian Premiere production of Peter Quilters Glorious! also directed by Sandra, and he is thrilled to be back in Sydney working with the same team for the Australian Premiere of Duets, Peter Quilters latest play, which has just had seasons in Europe, NZ and the USA. The play is also scheduled for seasons in 2009/2010 in Poland, South Africa, the Philippines, Canada and Argentina.

As the countdown to the Sydney Olympic Games begins, frustrated writer Andy (Jamie Oxenbould) decides to pursue a brand new career path as a taxi driver. In the course of his adventures we meet 32 passengers, from drunken Americans to 104-year-old ladies to a couple of Liverpool lads who wonder why all Australian athletes are called Shane. And then there's Isabella (Catherine Moore), one very irritated girlfriend.

Based on the very funny book by Anthony Sharwood, written from his own experiences as a sporting commentary, social statement and personal diary, You Talkin' To Me? is a celebration of a city and its people, a love story and a reminder of an innocent time. Mark Kilmurry was given a copy of the novel as a gift and instantly saw the potential for a live performance of this work which celebrates the two weeks in September 2000 when the whole world was watching Sy-den-ey and the best games ever. Jamie Oxenbould received critical acclaim for his tour de force performance in the Ensemble's 2002 production, Fully Committed. Now he takes on the challenge of once again portraying over 30 characters, this time ably assisted by Catherine Moore.

You Talkin' To Me? is playing at Ensemble Theatre, Kirribilli from April 2 -- May 3 then transfers to the Q Theatre, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith from May 6 -10 then returns to Ensemble Theatre from May 14 -- 22 with possible extension season to June 15.

true story of one of the worst singers in the world.

In 1940s New York, the performer everyone wanted to see live was Florence Foster Jenkins
(Noeline Brown), an enthusiastic soprano whose pitch was far from perfect.

Known as 'the first lady of the sliding scale', she warbled and screeched her way through the evening
to an audience who mostly fell about with laughter. But this delusional and joyously happy woman paid
little attention to her critics. Instead she was surrounded by a circle of devoted friends who were almost
as eccentric as she was.

Director Sandra Bates has assembled an extraordinary cast. Noeline Brown and Barry Creyton
first performed together on stage in a Phillip St Revue titled What's New? 45 years ago in 1962. Their legendary comedy partnership continued when they made their television debut together in The Mavis Bramston Show two years later in 1964. During the late seventies they starred together on television

her piano accompanist, Cosme McMoon, and Cris Parker plays the dual roles of Jenkins' Spanish
maid, Maria and an irate New York concert patron, Mrs Verrinder-Gedge.

Ilana Andrews (Tara Morice), world renowned origami artist, is in a rut. Her husband has left her, her threelegged
dog has run away and she is suffering from a bad case of folders block. She is facing the task of
designing a mesh heart sleeve to aid in the treatment of congestive heart failure when Andy (Drayton Morley),
her biggest fan and Treasurer of American Origami appears looking for her annual dues. Andy also wants
Ilana to tutor one of his students, Suresh (Arka Das) who is brilliant, troubled, annoying as hell and an
instinctive origami genius. As Ilana, Andy and Suresh work together they discover their lives are as fragile as
the paper they manipulate in this fascinating and exhilarating examination of love, loss and art.
New York based playwright Rajiv Joseph will be in Sydney from March 12 to 20 and available for interviews
before travelling to Los Angeles for the opening of his hit new play Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo which

David Lindsay-Abaire was advised as a student to write about the thing that most frightened him and after becoming a father began writing about a couple who lose their only child in a tragic accident. The play is not about finding an answer but learning how to live without one.

Rabbit Hole was awarded the 2007 Pulizter Prize for Drama after none of the nominated finalists achieved a majority vote, with the Board then electing to award the prize to a work that was not previously nominated.
