Little Nell - Australian Premiere - ENSEMBLE THEATRE
Australian Premiere - Little Nell
By Simon Gray
With: Gary Baxter, Katie Fitchett, Lee Jones, Olivera Jovanoska,
Mark Lee & Drayton Morley
Director: Mark KilmurryDesigner: Brian Nickless
Lighting Designer: Peter Neufeld
An astonishingly true account of one of the worlds greatest writers and his love affair with a young actress thirty years his junior.
Charles Dickens fell in love with the young actress Nelly Ternan. He was at the height of his success, happily married, one of the best loved authors in the world, Englands most respected moralist, and yet he had this desire that potentially could have ruined him. Only when Nellys son, Geoffrey, resolves to uncover the truth do we find out what really happened. Simon Grays beautifully written and seductive play examines the nature of affairs, wealth, fame and the legacy for the children left behind. This is part love story, part detective story, but all true.
Mark Kilmurry has assembled a stellar cast for this production including Mark Lee as Charles Dickens. Mark Lee last appeared at the Ensemble Theatre in Men of Honour as William Shakespeare. Best known for his role as Archy Hamilton in Peter Weirs Gallipoli Mark has had an extensive career in Australian film, television and on stage. He recently appeared in The Good German at the Seymour Centre and in 2007 made his directorial debut with the feature film, The Bet starring Matthew Newton, Aden Young and Sibylla Budd. Katie Fitchett appears as Nelly Ternan, Dickens muse and obsession, in her second appearance with the Ensemble Theatre following her 2005 debut in Arthur Millers, A View From the Bridge. Katie was most recently seen as Ismene in Company Bs production of Antigone. Drayton Morley is returning to the Ensemble Theatre following performances in Darlinghurst Theatres production of The Memory of Water and Q Theatres Sunday in the Park with George. Gary Baxter was last seen in the Ensembles production of McReele and Lee Jones appeared in the 2008 production The Busy World is Hushed. Olivera Jovanoska makes her professional debut in this production, having graduated from the Ensemble Studios in 2008.
Simon Gray passed away in August 2008 and the Ensemble Theatre dedicates this production to his memory. Simon Gray was a prolific novelist and playwright whose stage works include Life Support, Japes, The Old Masters and Quartermaines Terms. Little Nell was Grays last theatrically produced work prior to his death. The play was produced by the Theatre Royal, Bath in 2007, directed by Sir Peter Hall and is based on the book The Invisible Woman by Claire Tomalin.

In a time of political and religious turmoil, Queen Elizabeth I (Greta Scacchi) is an absolute monarch, responsible to no-one but herself and God. Australian Premiere - TRYING by JOANNA McCLELLAND GLASS
Director SANDRA BATES
Set Designer NICHOLAS DARE
Costume Designer ANNA ILIC

With MICHAEL CRAIG and CATHERINE McGRAFFIN
Elegant, cantankerous and 81 years old, Francis Biddle (Michael Craig) awaits the new secretary his wife has forced upon him to get his life in order. Sarah (Catherine McGraffin) is 25 and, even worse, from Saskatchewan, Canada. Francis doesn't trust her. Francis doesn't trust anyone... his last assistant managed to burn half his books. But Sarah is young, determined, takes shorthand the new 'modern way' and refuses to cry in the bathroom.
Francis Biddle was US Attorney General under President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Chief Judge at the Nuremberg trials. What happens after such a stella career? His real life secretary Joanna McClelland Glass shares his post public life story with us. As well as throwing light on the inner workings of a powerful historic figure, this rich and touching play illustrates how two strangers, at two very different points in their lives, can unexpectedly and lastingly influence each other.
Francis: I may be an invalid but I'm not yet entirely in-valid.
Michael Craig has had a distinguished career spanning more than half a century in film, television and on stage in Australia, the UK and Europe. The Ruby Sunrise - ENSEMBLE THEATRE
Australian Premiere - The Ruby Sunrise
By Rinne Groff
From 8 October 14 November, 2009
Cast: Hollie Andrew, Paul Gleeson, Glenn Hazeldine, Catherine McGraffin, Amanda Muggleton, Jonathan Prescott, Matilda Ridgway
Director: Sandra Bates, Designer: Claire Moloney, Lighting Designer: Gavan Swift
A dramatic tale of ambition, dreams and the hope of a brand new age of communication.
Who was the real inventor of television, John Logie Baird, Vladimir Zworykin or Philo T. Farnsworth? What if it had been Ruby, a poor, self-educated girl who, in 1927 created the first working photo-cathode tube in her Aunt Lois's barn in Indiana but only her boyfriend Henry knew about it? Fast forward to 1952 and a television studio in the grip of the McCarthy-era's censorship and communist witch hunts where talented writer, Tad Rose, is looking for a new and exciting idea for a television play. When he meets script editor and bright spark, Lulu, daughter of Ruby, whose own ambition is to tell her mother's story - whatever it takes - all his dreams seem to have come true.
Playwright Rinne Groff was inspired to write The Ruby Sunrise by the story of Philo T. Farnsworth, the farm boy from Idaho who was amongst the first inventors to produce an electric television transmitter. Groff has made Farnsworth into a girl whose journey to escape an abusive home life leads her to enter the race to invent the first working television and escape her disadvantaged background. Matilda Ridgeway makes her professional debut in the role of Ruby. Amanda Muggleton returns to the Ensemble stage for only the second time in the dual roles of Rubys Aunt Lois and the actress Ethel Reed. Paul Gleeson and Hollie Andrew last worked together on the feature film Somersault and are reunited as a studio executive and television starlet. You Talkin' to Me? - Ensemble Theatre

Diary of an Olympic Cabbie. Adapted for the stage by Mark Kilmurry from the novel by Anthony Sharwood.
Director MARK KILMURRY Designer BRIAN NICKLESS
Lighting Designer MARTIN KINNANE Sound Designer DARYL WALLIS
With Catherine Moore and Jamie Oxenbould
September 2000. Cathy Freeman, SOCOG. Beautiful, extraordinary weather. Ian Thorpe and, er ... Nikki Webster?
As the countdown to the Sydney Olympic Games begins, frustrated writer Andy (Jamie Oxenbould) decides to pursue a brand new career path as a taxi driver. In the course of his adventures we meet 32 passengers, from drunken Americans to 104-year-old ladies to a couple of Liverpool lads who wonder why all Australian athletes are called Shane. And then there's Isabella (Catherine Moore), one very irritated girlfriend.
Based on the very funny book by Anthony Sharwood, written from his own experiences as a sporting commentary, social statement and personal diary, You Talkin' To Me? is a celebration of a city and its people, a love story and a reminder of an innocent time. Mark Kilmurry was given a copy of the novel as a gift and instantly saw the potential for a live performance of this work which celebrates the two weeks in September 2000 when the whole world was watching Sy-den-ey and the best games ever. Jamie Oxenbould received critical acclaim for his tour de force performance in the Ensemble's 2002 production, Fully Committed. Now he takes on the challenge of once again portraying over 30 characters, this time ably assisted by Catherine Moore.
You Talkin' To Me? is playing at Ensemble Theatre, Kirribilli from April 2 -- May 3 then transfers to the Q Theatre, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith from May 6 -10 then returns to Ensemble Theatre from May 14 -- 22 with possible extension season to June 15.

Glorious - Ensemble Theatre Production 2007
Australian Premiere - GLORIOUS
by PETER QUILTER
The True Story of Florence Foster Jenkins, the World's Worst Singer
Directed by SANDRA BATES
Designed by MARK THOMPSON
Lighting Design by TRUDY DALGLEISH
With NOELINE BROWN, BARRY CREYTON, JUDI FARR, JONATHAN GAVIN & CRIS PARKER
From the writer of 2005's hit Ensemble show, End of the Rainbow, comes the hilarious and inspiring
true story of one of the worst singers in the world.
In 1940s New York, the performer everyone wanted to see live was Florence Foster Jenkins
(Noeline Brown), an enthusiastic soprano whose pitch was far from perfect.
Known as 'the first lady of the sliding scale', she warbled and screeched her way through the evening
to an audience who mostly fell about with laughter. But this delusional and joyously happy woman paid
little attention to her critics. Instead she was surrounded by a circle of devoted friends who were almost
as eccentric as she was.
Director Sandra Bates has assembled an extraordinary cast. Noeline Brown and Barry Creyton
first performed together on stage in a Phillip St Revue titled What's New? 45 years ago in 1962. Their legendary comedy partnership continued when they made their television debut together in The Mavis Bramston Show two years later in 1964. During the late seventies they starred together on television
in Blankety Blanks and on stage in The Naked Vicar Show. Then a decade later in 1987, they appeared together in the Ensemble Theatre's premiere production of Double Act written by Barry for the two of
them which then toured to Victoria and Tasmania. Barry returns to Sydney from his home in LA
especially to play Jenkins' boyfriend St Clair Bayfield, and distinguished actress Judi Farr plays her
best friend, Dorothy. Actor/pianist Jonathan Gavin (2 Pianos 4 Hands, End of the Rainbow) plays
her piano accompanist, Cosme McMoon, and Cris Parker plays the dual roles of Jenkins' Spanish
maid, Maria and an irate New York concert patron, Mrs Verrinder-Gedge.
'The play really isn't about singing. It's about an extraordinary woman who had the guts to
follow her dream.' Peter Brown, London Theatre Guide
'This affable, and often very funny, play suggests that although Jenkins hit all the wrong notes
on the concert platform, she may well have hit all the right ones in life. Author Peter Quilter portrays Jenkins as a woman who refused to give up on her dream, and intimates that it is only
in following our dreams we can we be truly happy - and spread a little happiness for others.'

STELLA BY STARLIGHT - Ensemble Theatre
Australian Premiere - STELLA BY STARLIGHT
by Bernard Farrell, Director ANDREW DOYLE,
Designer MARK THOMPSON, Lighting Designer GAVAN SWIFT.
With SARAH CHADWICK, KELLIE CLARKE, PAUL GLEESON, MARK OWEN-TAYLOR, KATE RAISON & LEIGH SCULLY.
In space, no one can hear you dream...
Dermot (Paul Gleeson) is obsessed with Jupiter's impending visitor from outer space...
Dermot's wife Stella (Sarah Chadwick) has visitors from the past...their daughter Tara (Kellie Clarke) has a visiting boyfriend (Leigh Scully) whose nickname may or may not be...'Needles.'
Old friend Paul (Mark Owen-Taylor) wants to visit Stella...preferably after lights out. His wife Geraldine (Kate Raison) needs husband Paul to visit her...or there'll be a cosmic explosion of a different sort...
As the comet crashes in a heap into the surface of Jupiter ...so does Dermot's world, along with
his model of astrology, his car, and...his dog. Only Stella... 'Stella By Starlight' ...can save the day...(or night).
Irish playwright, Bernard Farrell's very funny comedy tackles the universal nature of hopes, dreams and fears in this wry and compassionate look at family life. The play is set in the present, in Dermot and Stella's isolated farmhouse in Wicklow Hills, well beyond the outer suburbs of Dublin, Ireland.
Director Andrew Doyle has assembled a distinguished cast which includes Sarah Chadwick as STELLA - (Sarah's credits include the films - The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, George Miller's Gross Misconduct and for TV: G.P. Flying Doctors, MDA, Blue Heelers, All Saints and Headland), Paul Gleeson (credits include the films: Somersault & The Thin Red Line, TV: Love My Way and for Ensemble Theatre All My Sons) Mark Owen-Taylor (film: The Opposite of Lucky, TV: Two Twisted, All Saints, Against the Wind, Grassroots, Theatre: for STC: Woman in Mind & The Way of the World and for Bell Shakespeare Twelfth Night) and Kate Raison (for Ensemble Theatre: Charitable Intent, Chapter 2, Birthrights, After the Ball, for TV: All Saints, A Country Practice, Outriders, Pacific Drive.)
'A sure-fire audience pleaser. Loaded with laughs, the work clearly reveals that its author, before he's anything else, is a showman of considerable accomplishment.' CurtainUp
'Polished, accomplished, mature, wicked, self-confident and very, very funny.' The Sunday Independent

RABBIT HOLE - Ensemble Theatre
RABBIT HOLE by David Lindsay-Abaire
WINNER 2007 PULITZER PRIZE FOR DRAMA
Sydney premiere
Director Sandra Bates
Designer Graham Maclean
Lighting Designer Martin Kinnane
With Lorraine Bayly, Mark Kilmurry, Georgie Parker, Jonathan Prescott and Queenie van de Zandt
A painstakingly beautiful examination of grief, loss and blame within an ordinary family.
Becca and Howie Corbett (Georgie Parker and Mark Kilmurry) have it all until a shattering personal tragedy turns their lives upside down. As the couple come to terms with their loss, Howie is ready to move on but Becca refuses to accept reality. Becca's mother Nat (Lorraine Bayly) has her own demons to deal with while her wayward sister, Izzy (Queenie van de Zandt) has some earth shattering news of her own. Together they must struggle to face some daunting questions. How do you cope with the unthinkable? How do you start to live again? And how do you face the young man (Jonathan Prescott) on the doorstep desperate for atonement? Infused with wry humour this family drama is at turns heart-wrenching and surprisingly funny.
David Lindsay-Abaire was advised as a student to write about the thing that most frightened him and after becoming a father began writing about a couple who lose their only child in a tragic accident. The play is not about finding an answer but learning how to live without one.
Rabbit Hole was awarded the 2007 Pulizter Prize for Drama after none of the nominated finalists achieved a majority vote, with the Board then electing to award the prize to a work that was not previously nominated.
The sad, sweet release of RABBIT HOLE lies precisely in the access it allows to the pain of others... A beautifully observed new play. New York Times
... an intensely emotional examination of grief, laced with wit, insightfulness, compassion and searing honesty. Variety
