We flew from Istanbul to Izmir, then took a free bus to Selcuk (provided by Atlas Global). In Selcuk, we checked out the Ephesus Museum, Isa Bey Mosque, and the Basilica of St. John.

The Statues of Artemis at the Ephesus Archaeological Museum, Selcuk, Turkey
The museum of Ephesus which is the home to the 'finds' from the nearby Ephesus Excavation site. Its best known exhibits are the statues of Artemis retrieved from the temple of the Goddess in Ephesus. It also is the home of the Agricultural Museum. Nearby is the site of the Byzantine Church of St John and the tomb of St John the Evangelist. Other tourist sites close by are the Port of Kusadasi, the House of St Mary, Ephesus and the 13th Century Isa Bey Mosque.

Terrace Houses of Ephesus, Selçuk, İzmir, Ionia, Turkey, Asia
Ephesus terrace houses are located on the hill, opposite the Hadrian Temple. Also called as the houses of rich, important for the reason give us information about family life during the Roman period. They were built according to the Hippodamian plan of the city in which roads transected each other at right angels. There are six residential units on three terraces at the lower end of the slope of the Bulbul Mountain. The oldest building dates back into the 1C BC and continued in use as residence until the 7C AD. Ephesus terrace houses are covered with protective roofing which resembles Roman houses. The mosaics on the floor and the frescos have been consolidated and two houses have been opened to the public as a museum. They had interior courtyards (peristyle) in the center, with the ceiling open. They were mostly two-storied, upper stores have collapsed during time. On the ground floor there were living and dining rooms opening to the hall, and upstairs there were bedrooms and guest rooms. The heating system of the terrace houses were the same as that in baths. Clay pipes beneath the floors and behind the walls carried hot air through the houses. The houses also had cold and hot water. The rooms had no window, only illuminated with light coming from the open hall, so that most of the rooms were dim. The excavations of the terrace houses started in 1960. The restoration of the two of the houses have been finished and can be visited today.

İzmir'in Selçuk ilçesinde bulunan Efes Müzesi, dünyaca ünlü Artemis Heykellerine ev sahipliği yapıyor. Artemis Efes'in koruyucu tanrıçasıydı ve Efes'te onun adına yapılmış bir tapınak vardı. Tapınak ibadet yeriydi ama aynı zamanda banka olarak da kullanılıyordu. Belki de Paraya tapmak ifadesi buradan geliyordur :)

Ephesus Museum (Efes Müzesi), located near the entrance to the Basilica of St. John in Selçuk, displays excavations from the ancient city of Ephesus. Basilica of St. John, Selçuk, İzmir, Ionia, Turkey, Asia
The Basilica of St. John was a basilica in Ephesus. It was constructed by Justinian I in the 6th century. It stands over the believed burial site of John the Apostle. It was modeled after the now lost Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople. The basilica is on the slopes of Ayasuluk Hill just below the fortress near the center of Selçuk, İzmir Province, Turkey and about 3.5 km (2.2 mi) from Ephesus. According to some sources, the apostle John stayed in Ephesus; according to other sources Mary should have been with him; this hypothesis, not ascertained, is denied by some sources. On the site in Ephesus considered the seat of the tomb of John a basilica was built in the sixth century, under the emperor Justinian, of which today only traces remain. A few kilometers south of Ephesus is a small chapel known as the house of Mary. Preceded by a vestibule of the seventh century, the small building dates back to the fourth century. Traces of foundations probably dating back to the first century have been found.
