From Kuşadası Port to the Temple of Artemis - start of private tour in Turkey, NOS ship (Oct. 2013)
In Kuşadası Port of Call for our RCI Navigator of the Seas cruise ship, we had planned a private tour to Ephesus, using
ephesustravelguide.com (POC: Denizhan Pekoz, tour guide).
We met right after the cruise ship docked, so by 8:00AM that Thursday morning (October 10, 2013) we were aboard the Volkswagen van and ready to go!
Total cost (at the time - October 2013):
$ USD 270.00 for 6 ppl;
$ USD 280.00 for 8 ppl;
$ USD 290.00 for 10 ppl
Payment was made in Euro or US Dollar - in cash - at the end of the tour.
It was a full-day tour and we were picked-up at the Kusadasi Port Passenger Terminal by 8am and dropped off at the same location later that day, before the All aboard time for this port of call (we made it back right in time, catching the cruise ship at 4:25PM!).
Our FIRST STOP that morning was The Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world -- seen here is our Meet & Greet by the Pier and the short drive to this historic place.

Port of Kusadasi House of Virgin Mary Part 1
Today, we arrived at the Turkish Port of Kusadasi. Kusadasi Turkey, is a resort town on Turkey's Aegan coast, on the Asian continent. The nearest major airport is Izmir and the main industry is tourism. Indeed, Kusadasi is a summer tourist town. During winter, the population is under 100,000, with many empty apartments and shops that are closed. Come summer, the population swells to more than 300,000 (some say more than 500,000).
For us, we pre-booked a private tour and the guide was waiting for us just we got off the ship, holding a placard with our names. It was a very easy process to meet her. The highlight of this port would be the ancient city of Ephesus. See this map for Paul's missionary journeys. Paul lived in Ephesus from AD 52 to 54.
Before Ephesus, however, we would visit the House of Virgin Mary.
However, our first stop of the day wasn't Ephesus, but the House of Virgin Mary. It is not clearly recorded where the Virgin Mary spent her last days. However, it is reasonable to believe that Mary's last days were spent in Ephesus, under the care of apostle John.
The apostle John was believed to have died in Ephesus, around 100AD. John, the beloved discipline, was the only Apostle that did not die a matyr's death. While nailed to the cross, Jesus entrusted his earthly mother to John.
John 19:26-27
When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
The house that we were visiting has a history. Please refer to this website for the description -
Arrival in Kuşadası — Be Independent or Go on a Tour Bus
At each port you have three options: hop on an awaiting tour bus to enjoy the guided excursion you purchased from the cruise line; meet a private guide at the port who you arranged for on your own; or walk boldly into the unknown — guidebook in hand — and be your own guide. (Our new Mediterranean Cruise Ports guidebook is designed to be helpful to people going on any of these options.) On this cruise, I met an enthusiastic group on board who connected via cruisecritic.com, an online chat group. They organized various on-shore activities completely independent from the cruise line (such as arranging for a guide to meet them with a minibus here in Kuşadası) and were thrilled with the experience. Cruisecritic.com is a wildly popular resource among cruisers for feedback on independent guides who connect with travelers at ports.

The Temple of ARTEMIS in Turkey - private tour from Kuşadası Port , NOS ship (Oct. 10, 2013)
ARTEMIS was the Greek goddess, daughter of Zeus and Leto, the twin sister of Apollo. Believed to be born in Ephesus, she was the goddess of fertility and birth.
In Kuşadası Port of Call for our RCI Navigator of the Seas cruise ship, we had planned a private tour to Ephesus, using
ephesustravelguide.com
(POC: Denizhan Pekoz, tour guide).
We met right after the cruise ship docked, so by 8:00AM that Thursday morning (October 10, 2013) we were aboard the Volkswagen van and ready to go!
See the start of this private tour here:
Our FIRST STOP that morning was The Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
The Temple of Artemis or Artemision (Turkish: Artemis Tapınağı) - a Greek temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis - was located in Ephesus (near the modern town of Selçuk in present-day Turkey).
Seen here is the the site of the temple today -- at first sight, it does not appear to be much but if you close your eyes and listen to the tour guide Denizhan Pekoz, you can imagine a MARBLE temple once considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (completely rebuilt three times before its eventual destruction in 401 AD).
Unfortunately, all that remains of the Wonder of the World is a SINGLE COLUMN and some rubble on the ground.
However, it is a spiritually important site.
You would see 3 different religions meeting in the same block: a pagan temple, a Christian church (Basilica of St. John) and a Muslim mosque (Isa Bey Mosque).

Walking around Kusadasi Turkey NCL Jade Cruise Carpets!
Back at the port, we walked around the beachfront and explored the shopping areas for a bit. Kusadasi is a summer vacation town, so many of the shops were closed. I think this place would be bustling during summer.
7 Days Cruise Iconic Aegean - Istanbul, Kusadasi, Santorini, Crete, Rhodes, Symi, Chios, Mykonos
All the paperwork is done, you took the necessary pictures with our mascot, you got on board, found your luggage at the door of your cabin and decided to explore the ship before departure. Now you are enjoying your coffee in one of the ship's decks. The siren signals the ship's departure and you know you are about to experience an amazing cruise in eastern Mediterranean. The cruise of a lifetime!
The first destination is Istanbul, with the incredible culture, the imposing monuments, the undeniable charm and the mazy souks. Your eyes witness scattered architectural jewels from the Byzantine and the Ottoman era, awaiting for you to explore, touch and feel. From the cosmopolitan town of Kusadasi and after you have visited the local indoor souk you can't miss the town of Ancient Ephesus. At a mere distance of 19 kilometers, it's definitely worth visiting this well preserved ancient city, which is one of the biggest open archaeological museums of the world.
The rugged, almost primitive beauty of Santorini will bedazzle you from the moment we will reach the famous Caldera. You will then discover the magic of the black rock beaches, the cave houses, the lighthouses and the steep cliffs that submerge into the azure waters that sparkle under the hot Mediterranean sun. You will feel it! In the beautiful town of Agios Nikolaos you will experience the warm Cretan hospitality and have the chance to visit the scenic villages of the prefecture of Lasithi, the monasteries and the famous islet of Spinalonga.
After the earthy Cretan aura you will travel back to Medieval times in Rhodes! Knights, palaces, well preserved citadels and a history of 2,400 years that still excites and intrigues thousands of visitors. The next destination is the charming islet of Symi, whose capital resembles a theatrical stage. A stage filled with traditional settlements, mansions and a rich maritime history.
Chios, which is allegedly the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, Homer and many others, is the most divinely fragrant island of eastern Aegean, with the mastic trees and the vineyards, the well preserved medieval villages and the lovely, secluded, pristine beaches. Before you bid goodbye to all the friends you 've made during the cruise, in our lounges, casino and restaurants, you will have the opportunity to see the famous island of Mykonos. See up close the iconic windmills, take a stroll in the narrow cobblestoned streets that lead to traditional settlements and the port, see the dazzling white, boxy houses, Little Venice and the ever famous Cycladic sunset. Have a safe trip and Welcome aboard!
