STORYLINE
Orthodox Christians in Ukraine celebrated the festival of Epiphany on Wednesday by taking a dip in the ice cold waters of the capital Kiev.
Braving temperatures of 3 degrees Celsius (37.4 Fahrenheit) a group of winter swimmers plunged into the Dnieper river after a traditional Epiphany ceremony.
The celebration is carried out across the country, and is traditionally done in rivers, ponds or lakes at night on the eve of Orthodox holy day of 19 January, when the first Russian Christians were baptised in 988 A.D (Anno Domini).
It's believed that on this special day, the waters of waterways are holy.
Medical officials were at the scene in case the chilly conditions became too much for the faithful, although most of the swimmers do it annually.
I've been swimming for 21 years. I'm keeping my energy levels up. Water, sun and fresh air helps me. I wish the same to everyone, said swimmer Mykhailo Nakalugniy.
While in western Christian traditions, Epiphany marks the visit of the wise men or magi to the infant Jesus, in Eastern Orthodoxy the festival commemorates Christ's baptism.

Epiphany - 19 January 2012 (Siberia - Tomsk) - Богоявление Tomck (part 2)
19/01 : The Epiphany, celebrated in Russia and Ukraine on January 19, marks the baptism of Jesus in the Orthodox Church. Believing that on this day water becomes holy and is imbued with special powers, Russians and Ukrainians cut holes in the ice of lakes and rivers, often in the shape of the cross, to bathe in the freezing water. Participants in the ritual may dip themselves three times under the water, honoring the Holy Trinity, to symbolically wash away their sins from the past year, and to experience a sense of spiritual rebirth.
