VS of trackside activity - crowds, funfair, racegoers, Gipsy Lee caravan, family having a picnic beside their car. CU of salad being eaten. VS of people enjoying picnics with champagne drunk out of tumblers. Man eats salad that is in a tin tray balanced on the top of his car. Track level view of horses coming around corner. When I started this project in April 2010, the ambition was to see the UK, but to do it with mates as well and have a great time with lots of banter. Trip one to Brighton with the gang started it all off, and here we are all back together on my 20th trip of 501! We hit the Epsom Derby which was a lot of fun, as Elvis duck made another appearance, I moaned about Facebook stopping me from uploading videos, and sten got filthy! Tom was back to his betting style and Darren wanted to whisper to horses with his nuts! This also features some flashback moments from 2010's derby trip! What will 2012 have in store...come back on here in a few weeks to find out!!!

Emily Davison: Suffragette Killed by King's Horse at Derby (1913) | British Pathé
Prior to the First World War, women's rights were a regular item of Pathé newsreels. One great landmark in the history of Pathé scoops was one of their cameras capturing the extreme sacrifice by the suffragette Emily Davison. In the blink of an eye, Davison runs from the crowds and throws herself under the King's horse. Crowds of people run on to the track to try and help both the fallen rider and Davison. Davison died several days later in hospital.

Before television, people came to movie theatres to watch the news. British Pathé was at the forefront of cinematic journalism, blending information with entertainment to popular effect. Over the course of a century, it documented everything from major armed conflicts and seismic political crises to the curious hobbies and eccentric lives of ordinary people. If it happened, British Pathé filmed it.
Now considered to be the finest newsreel archive in the world, British Pathé is a treasure trove of 85,000 films unrivalled in their historical and cultural significance.
British Pathé also represents the Reuters historical collection, which includes more than 136,000 items from the news agencies Gaumont Graphic (1910-1932), Empire News Bulletin (1926-1930), British Paramount (1931-1957), and Gaumont British (1934-1959), as well as Visnews content from 1957 to the end of 1984. All footage can be viewed on the British Pathé website.
Kahyasi- The 1988 Epsom Derby (Epsom Downs)
Kahyasi (1985--2008) was an Irish-bred and British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He won the first five races of his seven-race career, including the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby as a three-year-old in 1988. Here he is winning the 1988 Epsom Derby with Ray Cochrane in the saddle. Luca Cumani was Kahyasi's trainer and the horse was owned by HH Aga Khan IV. Kahyasi's time on the day was 2;33.84

Grundy- The 1975 Epsom Derby (Epsom Downs)
Grundy (1972--1992) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred Champion racehorse. He was a leading two-year-old in 1974 and went on to win the Epsom Derby in 1975. He is best remembered however, for his last win, in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. Here is his win at the 1975 Epsom Derby with jockey Pat Eddery. Grundy was trained by Peter Walwyn and owned by Carlo Vittadini.

Epsom Derby Winner: Masar
A horse trained right there in Cambridgeshire has won this years Epsom Derby, defying the odds to take the crown home to Newmarket. Nasar, ridden by William Buick was a 16-1 shot but finished one and half lengths ahead of the chasing pack including odds on favourite Saxon Warrior.
