Επταπύργιο (Yedi Kule)
The Heptapyrgion , modern Eptapyrgio , also popularly known by its Ottoman Turkish name Yedi Kule, is a Byzantine and Ottoman-era fortress situated on the north-eastern corner of the Acropolis of Thessaloniki in Greece. Despite its name, which in both languages means Fortress of Seven Towers, it features ten, and was probably named after the Yedikule Fortress in Constantinople (modern Istanbul, Turkey). It served as the major redoubt of the city's acropolis, as well as the seat of its garrison commander in Ottoman times, until the late 19th century.

GREECE: EXPLORING the isolation cells, the OTTOMAN (TURKISH) PRISON in THESSALONIKI ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit a fortress which has towered over the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, for over 1,000 years. It was first constructed during the Byzantine era (330 AD to 1453 AD), although this most recent version was rebuilt by the Ottomans after they conquered the city in the 1400s. It goes by a few names: Heptapyrgion, Eptapyrgio, and Yedi Kule, all of which mean “Fortress of Seven Towers.” It’s a bit of a misnomer, though, as the fortress actually has 10 towers.
In the 19th century, the Turks converted the fortress into a prison which was finally closed down in 1989 by the Greeks.

The Best of Thessaloniki ????????We Can't Believe this Place! What to do in the City.
We’re back in Greece! We’re starting this trip in the second biggest city in the country, Thessaloniki.
If you're looking for things to do in Thessaloniki this video is for you. We begin at pretty much the top of the city, at a castle called The Heptapyrgion,or Eptapyrgio. It started off as a castle and eventually turned into a prison. You can see remnants of both.
After this we headed back down the hill to a park with strange structures in them called Pasha’s Gardens.
We then headed all the way down the hill to get one of our favourite coffee drinks a Fredo Cappuccino and then explored the main square in Thessaloniki called Aristotelous Square.
Lastly we took a walk along the beautiful waterfront until we got to one of the most recognizable structures in the city, the White Tower. Here we headed to the top to enjoy the fantastic views of the city!
ABOUT THESSALONIKI
Thessaloniki is a Greek port city on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea. Evidence of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history remains, especially around Ano Poli, the upper town. The ruins of Roman Emperor Galerius’ 4th-century palace include the Rotunda that has been both a church and a mosque. Much of the city center was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1917. The rebuilt 20th-century city has a modern European layout.

Salonica's Eptapirgio - Yedi Kule
- Yesterday my family and I visited the Heptapyrgion of Thessaloniki, such a wonderful experience! I was captivated by the walls, the prison's cells and the architecture!
- The Heptapyrgion (Ancient Greek: Ἑπταπύργιον), modern Eptapyrgio (Επταπύργιο), also popularly known by its Ottoman Turkish name Yedi Kule (Γεντί Κουλέ), is a Byzantine and Ottoman-era fortress situated on the north-eastern corner of the acropolis of Thessaloniki in Greece. It was then converted to a prison (Φυλακές Επταπυργίου), which remained open until 1989. References to the infamous Yedi Kule prison abound in the Greek rebetika songs. Restoration and archaeological work began in the 1970s and continues to this day.
