This summer, I had an oppotunity to vist Erfurt in Germany. Erfurt is located in the central Germany and famous for its University where Martin Luther studied and Erfurt Cathedral where he served as a monk before he started Protestant Reformation. This time when I visited the Erfurt Cathedral, a church organist was playing its pipe organ. I took video so that you can enjoy the sound of pipe organ. I hope you can enjoy its sound also beautiful stained glasses.

Places to see in ( Erfurt - Germany ) Erfurt Cathedral
Erfurt Cathedral, also known as St Mary's Cathedral, is the largest and oldest church building in the Thuringian city of Erfurt, central Germany. It is the episcopal seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erfurt. The cathedral was mainly built in the International Gothic style and is located on a hillside overlooking the main town square (Domplatz, Cathedral Square). Former German names include Marienkirche and Propsteikirche Beatae Mariae Virginis.
The site of the present cathedral has been the location of many other Christian buildings, for example a Romanesque basilica and a church hall. In 742, Saint Boniface erected a church on the mound where Erfurt Cathedral is now sited. In the mid-12th century, the foundations of the original church were used for a Romanesque basilica. In the early 14th century, the mound was enlarged to make room for St Mary's Cathedral. Martin Luther was ordained in the cathedral on 3 April 1507.
The architecture of Erfurt Cathedral is mainly Gothic and originates from the 14th and 15th centuries. The building has many notable architectural features, including the stained glass windows and the interior furnishings. The central spire of the cathedral's three towers houses the Maria Gloriosa which, at the time of its casting by Geert van Wou in 1497, was the world's largest free-swinging bell. It is the largest surviving medieval bell in the world. It is known for the purity of its tone.
The cathedral houses many rare and rich furnishings and sculptures, including the tomb of the bigamous Count von Gleichen, accompanied by both of his wives, a stucco altar, a bronze candelabra of Romanesque antiquity called Wolfram, the oldest free standing cast work in Germany, and, out on the porch, several statues of the Wise and Foolish Virgins.

Impromptu organ performance in St. Mary's Cathedral, Erfurt, Germany
Over the past week, I have had the pleasure of accompanying my parents on a Pipedreams Organ tour of southeast Germany. We saw and heard many famous organs during this week.
In this video, this is the resident organist of St. Mary's Cathedral in Erfurt playing. I'd love to share the name of this piece with you, but there isn't one: The organist said he'd introduce the capabilities of the organ by improvising a little. I never would have anticipated 12 minutes of this... (Apologies for the less than optimal audio: This is me just recording on my Samsung phone, which picks up my own breathing and the noise of people going in and out of the church better than the organ.)
A couple things don't come over well in the video: First, the sheer magnitude of the sound. Especially during the section around 2:20 (my favorite bit), the organ is filling the entire cathedral with chest-rattling bass notes.
And second, during the part where he answers each phrase with a second quieter repetition of the same phrase (around 3:00), he's using a second set of pipes on the opposite end of the cathedral which are apparently controllable through a single console. The music truly enveloped us. This entire performance was an Awesome experience in the original sense of the word. If this had been the only piece we heard performed all through the trip, it still would have been worth flying half way around the world to hear. (And there were several truly stupefying performances like this, though this was probably my favorite.)

No vlog, no intrusive faces, no talking or cuts - just walking for over an hour.

Erfurt, Thuringia's capital, is one of central Germany's most beguiling and significant cities. Holding its head as high as the former capital to the east, Weimar, it's a wonderfully preserved medieval city of grandiose churches, cobbled market squares, captivating museums and miraculously preserved architecture. And, as a university town, its contemporary culture is anything but backward-looking.
Straddling the Gera River, Erfurt was founded by St Boniface as a bishopric in 742, then propelled to prosperity in the Middle Ages as a major centre of the woad trade. In 1392 rich merchants founded the university, allowing students to study common law, rather than religious law. It was here that Martin Luther studied philosophy before taking holy orders. With most of its historical centre spared destruction in WWII, today's Erfurt proves that modernity and history can coexist gracefully. The city's appearance honours its medieval roots, while adding often classy, sometimes quirky, contemporary flourishes.
With over 200,000 inhabitants today, Erfurt was an important trading town during the Middle Ages, and has many beautiful old buildings and parks. Its university was one of the oldest in Germany, before it shut down early in the 19th century, but a refounded incarnation dating to just after reunification claims the old and august tradition.
