Places to see in ( Erfurt - Germany ) Erfurt Cathedral
Erfurt Cathedral, also known as St Mary's Cathedral, is the largest and oldest church building in the Thuringian city of Erfurt, central Germany. It is the episcopal seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erfurt. The cathedral was mainly built in the International Gothic style and is located on a hillside overlooking the main town square (Domplatz, Cathedral Square). Former German names include Marienkirche and Propsteikirche Beatae Mariae Virginis.
The site of the present cathedral has been the location of many other Christian buildings, for example a Romanesque basilica and a church hall. In 742, Saint Boniface erected a church on the mound where Erfurt Cathedral is now sited. In the mid-12th century, the foundations of the original church were used for a Romanesque basilica. In the early 14th century, the mound was enlarged to make room for St Mary's Cathedral. Martin Luther was ordained in the cathedral on 3 April 1507.
The architecture of Erfurt Cathedral is mainly Gothic and originates from the 14th and 15th centuries. The building has many notable architectural features, including the stained glass windows and the interior furnishings. The central spire of the cathedral's three towers houses the Maria Gloriosa which, at the time of its casting by Geert van Wou in 1497, was the world's largest free-swinging bell. It is the largest surviving medieval bell in the world. It is known for the purity of its tone.
The cathedral houses many rare and rich furnishings and sculptures, including the tomb of the bigamous Count von Gleichen, accompanied by both of his wives, a stucco altar, a bronze candelabra of Romanesque antiquity called Wolfram, the oldest free standing cast work in Germany, and, out on the porch, several statues of the Wise and Foolish Virgins.

The cathedral square in Erfurt is a large marketplace with about 3.5 hectares , with intact or restored edge buildings. Once it was the main market square and court square. In the square of the stand Minerva fountain (1784) and in 1777 in honor of the Mainz Electors erected Erthal obelisk .
On the Domberg on the west side of the square is the ensemble of Erfurt Cathedral and Severikirche . The 70 leading to the mountain cathedral steps exist in its present form since the mid-19th century. In contrast to the cathedral, the Severikirche is a parish church. The associated district fell victim to artillery fire on the French-occupied Erfurt Fortress in 1813. Since then, the cathedral square is much larger than before. On the original part of the cathedral square, which belongs to the church, lies basalt plaster. The other part, where formerly the not rebuilt Severi district, is paved with concrete blocks and belongs to the city of Erfurt.
Dom and Severikirche were under the cathedral architect Erwin Gramse during the GDR period by donations, building materials and partly also builders from West Germany preserved and renewed. In front of the Severikirche are the canon houses , which reach to the Boniface tower, which belonged to the former bishop's castle. Next to it is the Catholic parish hall built in the 1990s.
Next to the cathedral square, to the northwest, is the Citadel Petersberg , where the towers of St. Peter's Church stood until 1813 . Below Petersberg is a 1998 opened multi-storey underground car park. On the slope of the hill, a vineyard was created with the help of the partner Bechtheim and the Erfurt coat of arms of flowers planted.
Between the entrance to the underground car park and the building of the district court Erfurt of 1880 on the north side of the cathedral place lies the rear entrance to the buildings of the district authority of the Ministry for national security of the GDR, under it the prison, in which today a memorial place is. On the east side of the cathedral square lies a row of town houses of different periods of time and style.
In the southeast corner of the cathedral square stood the house to Pilgrim . Today, the historic houses Zur Lamprete or Grüne Apotheke (first mentioned in 1638) and the Gasthaus Zur Hohen Lilie (change in Renaissance style 1538) are still standing as the southern wall of the square . This is followed by the double building of the former house Zur Blume and Zum Güldenen sledge , the former house to the Prophet (later Thüringer Hof) with now private use and the former house to the goats . However, the latter historical names are no longer found on the restored buildings.
The originally swampy and traversed by an arm of the Gera place (only the southern part of today's cathedral square) was developed in the 12th century after drainage to the market . He had documentary in 1293 the name ante gradus ( Before the degrees , the steps to the cathedral). The square, later called the Great Market , was located near the intersection of via regia with an old trade route in a north-south direction. On the market was traded with salt, wood, leather and other goods. Under the rule of Mainz he was also a public court place. In 1774, the Elector of Mainz and the ruler of the city visited the city of Erfurt, for which reason the Erthal obelisk was builton that place. This was renewed in 1899 on the occasion of a visit by Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Erfurt is a city in the central German state of Thuringia. Martin Luther, father of the Protestant Reformation, was ordained in the Cathedral of St. Mary, whose origins date to the 8th century. Next to the cathedral is the Gothic Church of St. Severus. The Augustinerkloster is a monastery where Martin Luther lived as a monk. The Krämerbrücke bridge has medieval houses and shops, and stretches over the Gera River.
Erfurt, Thuringia's capital, is one of central Germany's most beguiling and significant cities. Holding its head as high as the former capital to the east, Weimar, it's a wonderfully preserved medieval city of grandiose churches, cobbled market squares, captivating museums and miraculously preserved architecture. And, as a university town, its contemporary culture is anything but backward-looking.
Straddling the Gera River, Erfurt was founded by St Boniface as a bishopric in 742, then propelled to prosperity in the Middle Ages as a major centre of the woad trade. In 1392 rich merchants founded the university, allowing students to study common law, rather than religious law. It was here that Martin Luther studied philosophy before taking holy orders. With most of its historical centre spared destruction in WWII, today's Erfurt proves that modernity and history can coexist gracefully. The city's appearance honours its medieval roots, while adding often classy, sometimes quirky, contemporary flourishes.
With over 200,000 inhabitants today, Erfurt was an important trading town during the Middle Ages, and has many beautiful old buildings and parks. Its university was one of the oldest in Germany, before it shut down early in the 19th century, but a refounded incarnation dating to just after reunification claims the old and august tradition.

Video of the Cathedral Hill with the unique in Europe Kirchenensenble the Cathedral St. Mary and St. Severus church. dom-erfurt.de
