ERIDGE GOOD HIKING TRAILS NEAR LONDON
his walk covers similar ground to the western part of the Tunbridge Wells Circular walk (#19), using another railway line to access this attractive part of the High Weald from the opposite direction. The stations at Eridge and Tunbridge Wells (West) are now connected again by the Spa Valley Railway, and on days when it is operating you are likely to see and hear steam trains at several places along the route.
The morning section is an undulating route across typical High Weald territory, starting with a slightly longer route to Mottsmill Stream than that in the Eridge to Forest Row walk (#109). A choice of routes – along an open ridge or through a secluded valley – lead to Groombridge, one of many rural villages which developed away from the original hamlet with the arrival of the railway.
The afternoon section starts from Old Groombridge and goes past Groombridge Place, a beautiful Jacobean manor house surrounded by a medieval moat. You then follow the railway line a short distance up the Grom valley before turning into Broadwater Forest. Much of this area was acquired by the RSPB in 2007 and is now the Broadwater Warren nature reserve (free entry). The southern end of the wood is also a nature reserve (managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust) and the Main Walk goes past one of the massive sandstone outcrops in the area, Eridge Rocks.

Royal Tunbridge Wells is a large affluent town in western Kent, England, about 40 miles south-east of central London by road, 34.5 miles by rail. The town is close to the border of the county of East Sussex. Royal Tunbridge Wells is situated at the northern edge of the High Weald, the sandstone geology of which is exemplified by the rock formations at the Wellington Rocks and High Rocks.
The town of Royal Tunbridge Wells came into being as a spa in the Restoration and had its heyday as a tourist resort under Beau Nash when the Pantiles and its chalybeate spring attracted visitors who wished to take the waters. Though Royal Tunbridge Wells popularity waned with the advent of sea bathing, the town remains popular and derives some 30 percent of its income from the tourist industry.
Royal Tunbridge Wells is the administrative centre of Tunbridge Wells Borough and the UK parliamentary constituency of Tunbridge Wells. In the United Kingdom, Royal Tunbridge Wells has a reputation as being the archetypal conservative Middle England town, a stereotype that is typified by the fictional letter-writer Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells.
Tunbridge Wells is at the hub of a series of roads. Tunbridge Wells town historically had three railway stations: two of these are still in use by National Rail services. Tunbridge Wells station is, as its former name of Tunbridge Wells Central suggests, centrally located within the town at the end of the High Street, whilst High Brooms station is situated in High Brooms, to the north of the town. Both stations are located on the double-tracked electrified Hastings Line; services are operated by the Southeastern train operating company.

SWC Free Walk 19, Frant to Tunbridge Wells. 11/9/11.
13.4 miles of walking through the High Weald of East Sussex and Kent. The morning section involves a gentle climb up to Frant where the walker enjoys some fine views and joins the High Weald Landscape Trail. This is followed through Eridge Park for lunch at Eridge Green.
After lunch, the walker passes the sandstone outcrop at Eridge Rocks, the RSPB reserve at Broadwater Warren, and further outcrops at Harrison's Rocks and High Rocks; then, it's past the Jacobean house, Groombridge Place, and up the Grom Valley. Here, the Spa Valley Railway runs alongside the Tunbridge Wells Circular Walk, taking the walker into Tunbridge Wells.
Another lovely walk (with the exception of the water treatment plant past Groombridge! This section is also quite overgrown...) in the peaceful Weald.

LARGE FORMAT landscape photography | 4x5 | Broadwater Warren
This week, I'm at Broadwater Warren Nature Reserve in Kent with my 4x5 large format camera. I photograph a clump of five conifer trees using Fomapan black and white film and a red filter early in the morning.
Later, I try to find a composition at Eridge Rocks - a place with giant sandstone boulders and a Site of Specific Scientific Interest due to the community of plants growing on them.
I processed the film in my SP445 tank. The Fomapan was developed in Ilford ID11 (1+1) for 10 mins and the Ektar was dev'd using the Tetenal C41 kit.
