Boat ride in Kochi: Mattancherry - Ernakualm - Vypin - Fort Kochi
Last week, I visited Fort Kochi & Mattancherry to attend the third Kochi Muziris Biennale and took a short boat ride from Fort Kochi boat Jetty to Ernakulam Boat Jetty. These ships are operating by State Water Transport Corporation, and the charges are extremely less. It was just Rs. 4 for a 20+ minute boat ride. I was kind of got stuck in Ernakulam boat jetty by not getting the tickets to come back. There was a huge rush of people who wanted to go to Mattancherry and Fort Kochi. I waited for almost 10 minutes and was getting delayed a lot.
Later I decided to catch an Uber Taxi to Vypin island where they have a Jangaar service to Fort Kochi. I booked a taxi, and it took 15 minutes to reach Vypin ferry. From there I boarded the Jangaar by paying Rs. 3 and reached back at Fort Kochi where my car was parked. Jangaar is usually used to ferry vehicles as well as to carry passengers from Fort Kochi to Vypin Island.
Overall it was an unplanned incident and took almost two hours to finish a round trip. For more details visit us on

Ferry service between Vypeen and Fort Cochin
Apart from international cruises, domestic ferry and cruises operate in Kochi. Regular inter-island boat services operated by Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC), the state Water Transport Authority, and of private ownership are available from the High Court Jetty and the Ernakulam Central jetty at Park Avenue to various places. The junkar ferry for the trans-shipment of vehicles and passengers between the various islands are operated between Ernakulam and Vypin, and between Vypin and Fort Kochi. However, construction of the Goshree bridges (which links Kochi's various islands) has made ferry transport less important. Backwaters cruises are one of the most important tourist activities in the city. KSINC operates large luxury cruise vessel called Sagar-Rani for high seas cruise parties. Apart from KSINC, numerous of private operators provide private cruise vessels for short leisure trips across the backwaters.
Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has also launched boat services between Vyttila and Kakkanad as City Water Bus recently. The service is expected to be extended to more areas like Thevara soon.
Ferries are the fastest form of transport between Fort Cochin and the mainland.
There are services to Fort Cochin every 40 minutes (4.40am to 9.30pm) from the main jetty. Some are direct.
Ferries run every 20 minutes to Willingdon and Vypeen Islands (6am to 10pm) -- although with the new bridge to Vypeen these are often empty.
Ferries run from Customs Jetty to Ernakulam from 6.20am to 9.50pm. Ferries also run between Customs Jetty and Willingdon Island about 18 times a day from 6.40am to 9.30pm, every weekday except Sundays.
Car and passenger ferries cross to Vypeen Island from Fort Cochin virtually nonstop from 6am - 10pm.

Kochi Ferry Ride (Fort Kochi to/from Ernakulam), Kochi Harbour
Kochi reminds me of cities such as Istanbul, Venice, Kolkata (river ferries) and Hong Kong where ferry boats transport thousands of daily commuters.
The State Water Transport Dept. provides ferry services between Ernakulam (hub jetty), Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Vypeen Island, Willingdon Island, Vytila / Kakkanad, Varappuzha / Chittoor / Kadamakkudy and Mulavukadu.
A Water Metro network, integrated with the metro rail service in the city, is being planned to provide modern feeder AC ferry service to various islands along 16 potential new routes.

The State Water Transport Department was formed in the year 1968, with its Head Quarters (Directorate) in the District of Alappuzha. The Director is the Head of the Department. During formation, the service operation was only in the Districts of Alappuzha, Kottayam & Kollam. The nerve centre of all the functions and activities then was the Head Quarters at Alappuzha. Later the functions and activities were decentralised by establishing an office for the Mechanical Engineer and three Regional Offices in the Districts of Ernakulam, Kottayam (Chaganacherry) and Kasargode, headed by three Senior Superintendents.

Fort Kochi is a region in the city of Kochi in the state of Kerala, India. This is part of a handful of water-bound regions toward the south-west of the mainland Kochi, and collectively known as Old Kochi or West Kochi. Adjacent to this is Mattancherry. In 1967, these three municipalities, along with a few adjoining areas, were amalgamated to form the Corporation of Cochin.
Vypin/ Vypeen is one among a group of islands, that form part of the city of Kochi, in the state of Kerala, India. The island is about 27 km long. The western coast of Vypin has the longest beach in Kochi namely, the Cherai Beach, Kuzhuppilly Beach and the Puthuvype Beach. The northern tip of Vypin (Munambam) has the largest fishing harbour in Kochi namely, the Munambam Fishing Harbour.
