The Erzberg mine is a large open-pit mine located in Eisenerz, Styria, in the central-western part of Austria, 60 km north-west of Graz and 260 km south-west of the capital, Vienna. Erzberg represents the largest iron ore reserves in Austria, having estimated reserves of 235 million tonnes of ore. The mine produces around 2,153,000 tonnes of iron ore per year. It is also the site of the annual Erzberg Rodeo hard enduro race.

The Erzberg mine - located in Styra 37 miles northwest of Graz Austria - is the world's biggest deposit of siderite and largest open pit mine in Western Europe. It seems that already the Romans excavated the Iron ore in this mine. The extracted ore contains only few sulfur and phosphor so that it is best suited for the production of high qualitative steel.
Similar siderite deposits can be found in Huettenberg in Carinthia, Austria. Presumably the legendary reputation of the iron of Noricum is based on these two deposits.
Today, the mine can be explored by Hauly. On the back of this coal hauler with 860 hp one reaches the terraces of the stunning mountain. Where the terraces appear honeycomb-shaped the galleries of the former mining come to the surface.

Der Erzberg in der Steiermark, 60 km nordwestlich von Graz, ist das weltgrößte Vorkommen von Siderit und der größte Erztagebaubetrieb Westeuropas. Vermutlich wurde hier bereits von den Römern Eisenerz abgebaut. Das abgebaute Erz enthält wenig Schwefel und Phosphor, so dass es sich bestens zur Erzeugung von hochqualitativem Stahl eignet.
Ähnliche Siderit-Vorkommen gibt es in Hüttenberg in Kärnten, Österreich. Vermutlich gründet sich auf diesen beiden Lagerstätten ein Teil des sagenhaften Rufs des Eisens von Noricum.
Heute kann der Tagebau mit dem Hauly erkundet werden. Auf der Ladefläche dieses 860 PS starken Schwerlastkraftwagens erklimmt man die Terrassen des beeindruckenden Berges. Dort, wo die Terrassen wabenförmig erscheinen, treten die Stollen des ehemaligen Untertagebaus an die Oberfläche.

Beim ROCK@MAN Erzberg erwartet dich eine anspruchsvolle Laufstrecke auf variierendem Untergrund - von Schotter, Waldboden, Schlamm bis hin zu Wasser und Geröll ist alles dabei! Großteils findest du flache Streckenabschnitte mit moderaten Anstiegen. Zwischendurch heißt es aber auch mal Zähne zusammenbeißen: Da erwarten dich kurze, aber starke Steigungen, wie z.B. die E-Steiermark-Wasserleitung (96% Steigung).

Einmal selbst Hauly fahren. Ein Kindheitstraum? Am Erzberg in der Steiermark wird er wahr: Gerald Wiesner aus Eisenerz arbeitet als S-LKW Fahrer am steirischen Erzberg. S-LKW, das ist die Abkürzung für Schwerlast LKW. Am Erzberg sind insgesamt neun Fahrzeuge vom Typ Komatsu HD985-5 und HD785-7 im Einsatz. Mit 120 Tonnen Nutzlast, einem Gesamtgewicht von 200 Tonnen und einer Motorleistung von knapp 1200 PS sind sie die größter ihrer Art in ganz Mitteleuropa. Wir schauen Gerald bei seiner Arbeit über die Schulter. Er beschreibt seinen Umgang mit den großen Maschinen, worauf es dabei ankommt und warum er seinen Job gerne macht.

Part cluster of tricky enduro races, part four-day party, if you only get yourself to one event on the 2018 Hard Enduro calendar, make it the Erzbergrodeo. The jewel in the crown of the weekend's proceedings is the Erzbergrodeo Red Bull Hare Scramble (ERBHS), with 500 riders clawing their way out of the bottom of a quarry to try and conquer the Iron Mountain. But there's also the Iron Road Prologue, a hillclimb and the traditional ride into the town of Eisenerz to keep you busy.

Der Erzberg in Österreich: Mekka der Extrem-Enduro-Fans. Es sind 35 000 Menschen, die dem Dröhnen der Maschinen in das Bergbau-Gelände folgen. Für viele Fans ist es „das Woodstock des Motocross und das aufregendste Wochenende des Jahres.2000 Fahrer aus 26 Nationen versammeln sich hier. In der unwirklichen Szenerie des Tagebaus hetzen die Fahrer in die Prüfung ihres Lebens. Schon die ersten Steilhänge trennen das Feld. Jede einzelne der Passagen bringt die Enduro-Athleten an ihre Grenzen. Nur die 500 besten dürfen später am eigentlichen Rennen teilnehmen.

Erzbergrodeo Red Bull Hare Scramble Full Recap | WESS 2019

Britain’s Graham Jarvis has claimed victory at the Erzbergrodeo Red Bull Hare Scramble in Austria, round three of the World Enduro Super Series. Delivering a clinical performance at the 25th edition of the infamous Hard Enduro race, the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing star led home Germany’s Manuel Lettenbichler and Sherco Factory Racing’s Mario Roman.
Returning to Hard Enduro, the iconic Erzbergrodeo marked the third stop in this year’s race to become the ULTIMATE ENDURO CHAMPION. The world’s best Enduro riders were among an entry of 1702 competitors (including 49 women) from 43 nations that converged to the quiet mining town of Eisenerz for the annual four-day dirt bike festival.
Following two days of the Blakläder Iron Road Prologue qualification, championship leader Josep Garcia proved the fastest of the 500 qualifiers for Sunday’s Erzbergrodeo Red Bull Hare Scramble.
From the depths of the Europe’s largest iron ore quarry, competitors blasted off the start line for the 35-kilometre long race. With four hours to complete the 27 checkpoints dotted around the Iron Giant, it was Lettenbichler who was first to set the pace, taking over from Garcia and Jonny Walker shortly after the start.
Pushing hard, the 21-year-old German tried to break away from the pack, but with 44-year-old Jarvis at his best, Lettenbichler found himself trailing the Husqvarna rider as they entered the notorious Carls Dinner section.
Delivering a master class in the monstrous boulder garden, Jarvis broke clear of Lettenbichler in second, while the Sherco pairing of Roman and Wade Young were locked in a tight battle for third.
However, Lettenbichler – chasing his debut win – was undeterred and worked hard to reel Jarvis back in, drawing level at Green Hell with just four checkpoints to go. But Jarvis had a little energy in reserve to keep the youngster at bay and secure a record-equalling fifth Erzbergrodeo Red Bull Hare Scramble win.
Finishing just over two minutes behind, Lettenbichler’s runner-up result provisionally moves him into the WESS championship lead with three rounds complete. Putting in an impressively strong ride during the second half of the race, round one winner Mario Roman was able to cement his position of third and secure a debut podium result in the race.
Also finding his rhythm after Carls Dinner, Spain’s Alfredo Gomez was able to work his way past Wade Young to eventually finish fourth. Despite holding a podium position at the halfway stage in the race, Young slipped down the leader board to round out the top five.
After a bad start, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Taddy Blazusiak worked his way back into contention to take sixth, while Billy Bolt rounded out the top seven. In total, 16 competitors from seven nations completed this year’s Erzbergrodeo Red Bull Hare Scramble.
The World Enduro Super Series continues with round four, Spain’s Hixpania Hard Enduro on June 21-23.

Held in an enormous open cast iron mine in the Austrian Alps, the race attracts the world's finest off-road riders, including Travis Pastrana, Ronnie Renner, David Knight and Cyril Despres. And special guest Warren Pole will be included in the lineup this year.
