Historic Bergen and Bryggen - Bergen, Norway

Established nearly 1000 years ago, Bergen became a major Norwegian commercial center. This role was reinforced in the 1300s when a kontor - or foreign trading post - of the Hanseatic League was established here.

Bergen's colorful kontor, known as Bryggen, is the only suriving Hanseatic kontor (although many of the buildings have been rebuilt over time due to fire and age), and is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

In addition to Bryggen, Bergen is home to a number of historic sites. The area is also quite beautiful, as rugged mountains surround the coastal city and area fjords.

Bryggen is a Hanseatic Whaf in Bergen, and has been on the list of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites since 1979. Bryggen is in fact one of Bergen's and Norway's main attractions. Usually this area is vibrant and packed with people, but Bryggen and Bergen in winter is more calm, quiet and colder than usual. Still, vlogging about Bergen is so much fun no matter what season.

Bryggen was built after the great fire in 1702 and has been burnt down several times as it is made our of wood. The German Hanseatic League set up its trading office, where they dominated for almost 400 years.

Today it is a vibrant part of Bergen city centre with everything from popular restuarants, arts and craft to offices for companies. It's a FREE attraction - believe it or not! So everyone who travels to Bergen can enjoy this great attraction. Is by far one of the best things to do in Bergen and Norway.

Fun fact: There's actually an Escape Room (escape game) inside of Bryggen. This is a great group activity if you're travelling to Bergen and want a challenge in the true Bergen environment.

THE SPY GAME - We Became Spies in Bergen, Norway

We became spies in Bergen, and we brought two friends to join us.

The creators of Bergens well-known Escape rooms, Escape Bryggen ( developed this exciting attraction: The Spy Game.

We love escape rooms, so we though the spy game would be somewhat similar. The spy game, however, was something completely different. The creators themselves describe the game as:

Our game is a unique blend of theater and gameplay, where you have the power to shape the story. You will face a number of tasks and quests tightly woven into the plot. It is up to you to use all of your skills and wits to successfully untangle the story and avert catastrophe.All you have to do is to let your imagination run free. Become the heroes of your own movie.

We had so much fun with this unique experience, learning how to become a spy.

We would really recommend it to everyone! It's one of our top 5 indoor activities for rainy days in Bergen ♡

Bryggen, also known as Tyskebryggen, is a series of Hanseatic commercial buildings lining the eastern side of the Vågen harbour in Bergen, Norway. Bryggen has since 1979 been on the UNESCO list for World Cultural Heritage sites.

Com apenas pouco mais de duzentos mil habitantes, é porém a segunda cidade da Noruega: e é também mais interessante do que Oslo, sob alguns aspectos arquitectónicos e históricos que a tornam verdadeiramente muito pitoresca.
Entretanto, sua posição é muito especial, contida entre uma colina e aos pés das sete montanhas circunstantes, Bergen aparece sobre um pequenino porto que durante séculos foi o canal de sustentamento e, algumas vezes, também de fuga. Efetivamente, foi exatamente no mar, que seus habitantes encontraram salvação quando as pequenas casas de madeira da vila foram quase todas destruídas por um incêndio: era 1702 e foram contados centenas de mortos.
Porém a nova Bergen foi reconstruída a imagem e semelhança da antiga com as mesmas particularidades e uma dimensão rica de fascinação e de tradição que até hoje transparece. Bergen revela-se como um porto de consideráveis dimensões: por aqui passam a cada ano não menos de 50 mil visitantes atraídos pelas belezas da região e pelas incursões entre os fiordes.
O turismo é uma verdadeira indústria para esta população que soube preservar e difundir as belezas com inteligência. O Bryggen Museum é muito valorizado assim como a igreja histórica de St. Mary, que remonta ao século XII, construída inteiramente em pedra e exatamente atrás do museu. É de notável importância o templo Fantoft, uma igreja, construída inteiramente em madeira no século XII e que originalmente parecia dedicada ao culto não cristão mas pagão. A igreja resistiu por quase 1000 anos até o final de 1992 quando um incêndio furioso a destruiu inteiramente: para a comunidade de Bergen foi um golpe muito duro, porém, atualmente a igreja encontra-se inteiramente reconstruída em uma cópia idêntica em tudo ao original.

Norway's second largest city with a population of around 200,000, Bergen is a destination of architectural, historical and natural fascination. The city lies facing the sea with a dramatic backdrop of seven hills. Some 50,000 tourists visit Bergen annually, attracted by the beauty of the region and the accessibility of Norway's spectacular fjords. Bergen's port has throughout its history been crucial to the city's prosperity - and even the very survival of its people. In 1702, when a fire swept through the wooden houses of the then village of Bergen, the sea provided an escape route for thousands.
Bergen was founded as Norway's capital in the 11th Century by King Olav Kyrre and its high status remained until the 13th Century when the powerful Lubeck Hanseatic League made the 'Bryggen' quarter into a German ghetto, contained by a barrier and with special localised rules which gave great favour - and power - to the merchant classes. German dominance remained for 400 years, eventually being replaced by the Danes, and then the Swedes, until Norway gained peaceful independence in 1905. Only four houses remain from the days of the Hanseatic League, although the area of the former ghetto is the financial centre of the city.
One of Bergen's most illustrious sons was the composer Edvard Grieg, whose life and work is celebrated in his former home Troldhaugen. The contemporary cultural life of Bergen is also thriving and the city was selected as one of the Cultural Cities of Europe for the year 2000. Architecturally, Bergen has much to offer. Of particular note is the stone-built 12th Century St Mary Church. The Hanseatic Museum in the centre of Bergen near the Fish Market is one of the city's best-preserved wooden buildings. The wooden Fantoft Stave Church is another structure of particular fascination. The original church, which also dates to the 12th Century, was destroyed by fire in 1992 and the present structure is a faithful restoration.

The Fløibanen funicular in Bergen is one of Norway’s best-known attractions. Fløibanen can be found in the heart of Bergen, 150 m from Fisketorget – the fish market – and Bryggen wharf. It’s only a 10-minute walk to the lower station from where the cruise ships dock. The journey up to Fløyen (320 m above sea level) takes about 5–8 minutes.
