Dentist Farzad has returned to Iran after many years abroad to escape his anxieties and daily stresses. This striking ski hotel features one of the most fascinating designs in the world, but it's not found in the glamorous Swiss Alps, breathtaking Rocky Mountains of North America or near the snow-capped volcanoes of Japan.
Blending into the snowy landscape, the skeleton-like Barin Ski Resort is nestled in the Alborz mou-ntain range of northern Iran, around an hour's drive north of the capital, Tehran.
Its location may come as a surprise, as Iran isn't thought of as a destination for skiing. But the steep slopes nearby rise as high as 10,000ft and offer thrilling and challenging runs for even the most advanced skiers.
With smooth and fluid surfaces and white curves, Barin Ski Resort was inspired by an igloo, a domed shelter made of snow that is traditionally associated with the indigenous inhabitants of the Canadian Arctic.
Designed by RYRA Studio in Tehran, the hotel resembles a palace carved from snow, with cave-like rooms and pebble-shaped windows that may remind some visitors of the stone houses in the animated series The Flintstones.
Given that it's less than a mile from Shemshak, Iran's second-largest ski resort, the hotel embraces the snow-capped mountains in its design.
The 10-storey structure has 67 guest rooms, ranging from studios almost 500 square feet in size to a penthouse with nearly 3,000ft of space.
Inside, the igloo theme continues with blank white surfaces and round holes in interior walls and ceilings to welcome natural light.
Each guest room has a balcony with a sliding glass door, a TV built into the wall, pod chairs, an unconventional bed and a small kitchen.
RYRA Studio was asked to redesign the ski resort in 2008 as a cosy and warm place where young people could relax after skiing in extremely cold weather.
At the time, the base had already been completed and the main structure and ceiling had been built in a classic cube shape, but the architects felt the rectangular shape was alien to the sloping mountain formation, said RYRA Studio's Farinaz Nikoo.
Nikoo said: 'This location is defined by snow-covered landscapes, so they didn't want the building to be indifferent about its surrounding but as a part of nature embracing that.
'The Barin Ski Resort picks up on the philosophy of designing buildings so that the form emulates the immediate environment in a fluid way.
'It looks one with the snow-covered mountain, almost as if windswept onto the mountainside like an iced rock formation.'

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran will force the United States to retreat by resistance, which he described as the only option against unrelenting US pressure. During a meeting with the country's top political elites, including President Hassan Rouhani and parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani, Khamenei dismissed the possibility that the United States and Iran would go to war, stating that the Americans understand that any such conflict will not serve their interests.
Khamenei reasserted his earlier stance that dialogue with the current US government is not an option: As long as the United States is what it is now … negotiating is but poison, and with this current administration that poison is twice [as lethal].
Khamenei praised Iran's missile program, stressing that it remains nonnegotiable. He underlined Iran's self-sufficiency drive, which he said is being pursued by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
On the economic front, however, Khamenei admitted that Iranians, particularly the poor and the middle class, were under strain. At the same time, he rejected the idea that the economy is in a state of deadlock. The Americans are right, these sanctions are unprecedented, he said. But the point is that the Islamic Republic is made up of a powerful metal.

London attacks: Neighbors warned police London Bridge attacker held extremist views - TomoNews
LONDON — British police on Monday named two of the three Islamist extremists who killed seven people and injured 48 others in terrorist attacks in London on Saturday.
Khuram Butt, 27, was a British citizen born in Pakistan. His 30-year-old accomplice Rachid Redouane was of Moroccan-Libyan descent. Both men were from Barking in East London.
Butt, Redouane, and a third unnamed man were shot dead by police as they carried out a knife attack at Borough Market after driving a rented van into pedestrians on London Bridge.
Butt was known to Britain’s MI5 intelligence service and the police, the Independent reported. He was married with two children, including a newborn.
Butt appeared in a 2016 documentary called “The Jihadis Next Door”, in which he was seen praying to a black Islamic flag.
Butt reportedly had jobs with Transport for London and KFC, and was a keen supporter of Arsenal soccer club. He was wearing the team’s jersey during the attacks.
Neighbors told the Guardian that Butt was friendly, polite and a good father. However, others said they had reported him to the police for preaching extremist Islamist views to their children.
Police arrested 12 people in connection with the attacks but all have been released without charge.

2000 Civilian Killed by Srilankan Arm forces in the Government designated save zone today 10/05/2009
More than 2,000 innocent civilians have been killed in the last 24 hours, local aid workers, saying.
The rescue workers had counted more than 1,200 bodies. Many of the dead were found in bunkers and inside the tarpaulin tents, it said.
A government doctor, V. Shanmugarajah, who works in the area still under rebel control told the BBC that 378 bodies and 1,122 wounded had been brought to a makeshift hospital Sunday. (video shot by K.P.Sathes)
