NINH BINH, VIETNAM - Escape from Hanoi to this paradise on Earth
Ninh Binh is absolutely unbelievable! Just a short train from Hanoi and we arrived in this tropical paradise filled with mountains, rivers and jungles with temples and historic sights all around. This was a great way to escape the traffic and pollution in Hanoi and enjoy Vietnam's stunning scenery.
We took a train for just two and a half hours from Hanoi to Ninh Binh for around US$5.50 each. We'd heard so much about Ninh Binh and we'd seen the incredible photos of the famous sights. Nothing prepared us for the beauty of seeing all of this awesome countryside with our own eyes, though!
We stayed in a homestay near to Trang An and Hang Mua. The accommodation was very cheap and only cost us around US$18 for one night, including breakfast for both of us!
We experienced some of the amazing activities that Ninh Bing has to offer such as an idyllic boat ride in Trang An and we visited Instagram paradise in Hang Mua. If you want to improve your Instagram profile, Hang Mua is the place for you. Unfortunately, we weren't the only ones with that plan.

Why Ninh Binh (Vietnam) should be on the TOP of your travel bucket list
We decided to skip busy Ha Long Bay to explore Ninh Binh instead which has been described as Ha Long Bay on land. We have to say we have zero regrets. Ninh Binh turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of our Vietnam trip.
We start this vlog off with a tour of our accommodation. Located right at the bottom of the Mua Caves we stayed at Hang Mua Ecolodge.

With a tranquil view of the limestone caves to one side and rice fields on the other it made for an excellent accommodation in Ninh Binh for 5 days.
Once we were settled in it was time to climb the peak of the Hang Mua mountain where we could get a beautiful view of the surrounding area.
The next day we were picked up by our Ninh Binh private tour operator - Tommy’s Travel Service. Tommy is a Ninh Binh local unlike many of the other Ninh Binh tour operators and he organized an awesome schedule for us. If you're planning a visit to Ninh Binh Vietnam, we highly recommend Tommy's Travel Service. He's a real nice guy too!
Firstly we visited Trang An for a boat tour. This is also the former set for the Skull Island scenes from the King Kong Movie (which have since been removed, so we were lucky to have seen it). We were rowed through various caves and canals and saw amazing scenery unique to Ninh Binh. From the surrounding limestone caves to the complex water systems that ran between, we left with the most wonderful impression of Ninh Binh.

VIETNAM: HANOI: VIETNAMESE WORKERS FROM GERMANY RETURN HOME

Thousands of Vietnamese are heading home after spending years in Germany.
They first went to the former communist east Germany when the country was divided after the second world war.
But now that the reunited Germany is suffering high unemployment, they're having to return to their homeland.
Last week, Vietnam agreed to take back 40,000 of its own citizens in return for 130 million (U.S) dollars (200 million DM).
Most of them want to stay in Germany.
But APTV has discovered that some of the returnees have brought wealth and expertise back to the land of their birth.
These narrow Hanoi alleys are far removed from the industrial cities of Germany.
But this is where Ding Van Zung has returned after working in a slaughterhouse in Leipzig.
When he was injured on the job he got enough compensation from the German government to move back home and build a house.

I came back to Vietnam because there was a lot of unemployment in Germany. My family was very poor. I wanted to come back and build a house for my family. And also here I have my wife and children.

But unemployment is high in Vietnam too, and Zung has been forced to work as a security guard to support his wife and children.
Chan Ang Too-ahn found life easier after he left Germany.
He spent three years working in a German coal mine before he moved back to Vietnam in 1991 to start his own electronics consulting business.

I decided to come back for several reasons. Firstly, I knew the eastern block was collapsing and Vietnam would start changing. As a rule, Vietnam would eventually rise as other countries had. And I thought those who came back first would be able to take advantage of opportunities.

Too-ahn made the most of his opportunities.
He built a three storey house and bought a piano for his daughter Twee Ang.
He says the fall of the Berlin Wall made him realise that there were opportunities for the taking.

In Germany I saw the organisation or from of western society and I thought any society would develop into something like that if it could. I thought that at the first stage, privatization would be the best way for the Vietnamese economy to go to build up the country.

Hanoi Day Trip | Trang An and Ninh Binh Province
We hopped on an early morning train from Hanoi and were back in time for dinner. This day trip to Ninh Binh saw us renting scooters, going through the breathtaking scenery of Trang An by boat, finding an ancient temple and driving out into the nearby rice fields.
If you find yourself in Hanoi, we highly recommend you take a day trip out to Ninh Binh province. You could stay for a night or two and bicycle around the are as you'll have a bit more time.
But with scooters or cabs, you can easily do a day trip if you do not have the time.

More beautiful than Ha Long Bay?! | Trang An Grottoes in Ninh Binh, Vietnam
We had a rough start to our time in Ninh Binh, Vietnam but quickly fell in love with this beautiful place. We took the train from Hanoi to the town of Tam Coc and then headed to check out Hoa Lu and the Trang An Grottoes. We chose to do route #3 at the grottoes and enjoyed our boat ride through the caves and river running around the towering limestone karsts.

After catching the overnight train and arriving this morning, it was time to see what North Vietnam had to offer! Sapa is a tiny mountainous village in the very north of Vietnam, bordering China.
