1 inch of snow plunges Chattanooga into chaos
Two days after an inch of snow sent Chattanooga into chaos, we're beginning to get a clearer picture of the storm.
The local 911 center received about 35 hundred calls - that more than there were during the April 2011 tornadoes.
And the high number of car wrecks included four patrol cars and eight school busses.
Thankfully, authorities say the busses weren't seriously damaged, and no injuries were reported on board.
Now people are asking what happened? How did the school system mess up so badly?
Superintendent Rick Smith says he was watching forecasts 24 hours before the snow fell, but wasn't notified of potential snowfall until it was almost here - at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
While some schools scrambled to get busses on the roads, others didn't run busses at all.
Parents we spoke to say they were told their kids would be released early, but they weren't told when busses didn't go out. In many cases parents waited hours for kids to get safely home, when in fact the busses never started in the first place.
Now Smith says school officials will review how to handle weather emergencies in the future.
But as bad as roads were here, traffic problems were far worse in Atlanta.
Chattanooga State President Jim Catanzaro was one of thousands caught on Interstate 285 as it turned into a parking lot.
He was stuck inside his car for 13 hours in the 10 degree weather. Eventually, he steered into a ditch and drove the wrong way for more than a mile through the grassy snow to escape.
By the time he made it to Chattanooga, he had spent 25 hours in his car.
Tennessee failed to watch killer Terry Releford
Chilling new details have emerged in the case of a Hamilton County man who assaulted a teenage girl and killed his pregnant wife May 19.
As a multiple, violent rapist, Terry Releford was supposed to be on community supervision for life, but he was left unmonitored by the state department of correction.
So when Releford walked free, no one was tasked with supervising his behavior.
Records show he never completed mandatory sex offender training in prison. And he wasn't given a mental evaluation when his release was near, even though one was recommended.
Instead, he walked out of prison with only a promise to officials that he would seek sex offender treatment on his own.

Chattanooga shooting: shooter walked through the reserve hunting Marines and sailors - TomoNews
CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE — New details have been released regarding what happened at the Naval Reserve Center that was attacked by 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez on July 16. Four Marines and one navy petty officer were killed during the incident.
At the time of the attack, 20 Marines and two Navy corpsmen were inspecting their weapons after completing a training mission in California, Major General Paul W. Brier, commanding general of the 4th Marine Division, said during a news conference.
A serviceman with his own gun immediately fired upon Abdulazeez after the latter smashed through the facility's gate in his rented Ford Mustang convertible on July 16.
Abdulazeez quickly entered the compound and fatally shot a trooper inside, and continued to shoot anyone he encountered, according to by FBI special agent Edward Reinhold. The troops inside went door to door to get their colleagues to safety, Brier added.
I can tell you that our Marines reacted the way you would expect, Brier said.
Abdulazeez then came out through the back of the building and killed four servicemen in the motor pool area. He was later killed during a gunfight with Chattanooga police.
Those who were killed in the assault were: Gunnery Sgt. Thomas J. Sullivan, 40; Staff Sgt. David Wyatt, 35; Sgt. Carson A. Holmquist; and Lance Cpl. Squire D. Skip Wells, 21.
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, 26, died from his wounds early Saturday.
FBI officials do not believe Abdulazeez was collaborating with anyone else, and they are treating him as a 'homegrown violent extremist'.

Guards fleeing Hays State Prison
Guards at Hays State Prison in Trion, Georgia, are resigning at a rate not seen since inmates attacked two guards 18 months ago.
The latest exodus began in June, around the time the Department of Corrections announced that Scott Crickmar would replace Rick Jacobs as warden.
We're told there have been questions among guards about whether Crickmar has enough experience for Hays Prison. Walker State, the prison he comes from, is just over half the size of Hays, and the worst offenders aren't even housed there.
In the past three weeks, 16 officers gave their notices, quit or were transferred to another facility.
Some guards say they fear the worst when the partial lockdown at the prison is finally lifted.
Even though guards now have stab-proof vests and have gone through pepper spray training, they say inmates are making threats and that administrators aren't concerned enough about guards' safety.
The Perfect Mug Shot
At the Escape Experience, we strive to make each escape game as authentic as possible. For the C-Block prison escape room, where you have been sentenced to life in prison, the experience naturally must start with a mug shot.
Now, one might think that this is simply a quick snapshot in order to preserve photographic record of the prisoner. However, there is much more that goes into it. There is an art to each and every mug shot. And to make sure your mug shot is the best it can possibly be, let’s break down the intricate details that go into the perfect mug shot and help you put a F.A.C.E. to your crime.
FAMILIARIZE
Because of what you did, you are now going to prison. So the first thing you must do is to familiarize yourself with the situation that you’re in and just accept it. Go to prison forever if you like or find your way out.
ALIAS
I am going to assume that you don’t like to be pushed around behind bars. The only way to ensure that it doesn’t happen is to make your alias known. The alias you choose should reflect your personality, attitude and how many people you’ve killed...um...I mean...how many people you didn’t kill. If you find yourself stuck in what to call yourself, refer to our Alias Generator. It may find you an alias but also may make you a laughing stock in your block. Don’t take this task lightly.
CAPTURE
Of course, when you are being processed and your photo is being captured, you don’t want to look like all the other scoundrels on your block. Your mug shot should show who you are. Just think about what is most unique about you. We’ve seen sunglasses, handcuffs, engagement rings, and bunnies. Nothing is out of bounds.
EMBRACE
Embrace the persona you have given yourself and don’t allow the other inmates to rob you of that. Anything you do from here on out is going to reflect who you are or are not.
With these tips and strategies you are now prepped for the perfect mug shot. We look forward to working with each and everyone of you to make your C-Block Escape Experience as authentic as possible…starting with the perfect mug shot. See you on the inside Nashville.

What New Marine Corps Recruits Go Through In Boot Camp
We got an inside look at the United States Marine Corps’ intense 13-week basic training program. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent five days at the Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina, where he observed different companies at various stages of training.
Recruits endure a series of intense physical challenges such as entering a gas chamber, rappelling down a 47-foot-tower, and fighting each other with “pugil sticks.” The Marine Corps is the only US military branch that separates male and female recruits during basic training. In a statement to Business Insider, a spokesperson from the Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot at Parris Island said, “The same gender platoon model allows for appropriate acclimation to the training environment, development of key relationships with drill instructors, and optimal focus during the beginning of their transformation.”
After weeks of extreme physical and psychological challenges, training culminates with “The Crucible,” a 54-hour event where recruits endure exhausting combat scenarios while running on minimal food and sleep.

Cold Weather Believed Responsible for Man's De
Chattanooga police are investigating the discovery of a body near East 11th Street, found in freezing conditions. The body was found off of 11th Street near the railroad viaduct.
A CPD investigator tells NewsChannel 9 the death is more than likely because of exposure to the cold temperatures last night.
We spoke with local homeless shelter directors about what they do when the temperatures drop.
Almost never will someone be turned away on a freeze night, but I've given you the rules. On a non-freeze night the expectation is that you would come in between 6 and 7. On a freeze night you can come in at any time - say the weather catches you off guard or something like that, said Jens Christensen, the Executive Director of the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.
It's a similar situation down the street at the Christian Rescue Mission.
On a freeze night when you get a really cold night like these, we can open up our chapel and enable additional people to stay, said Donald Baer, the Director of the Christian Rescue Mission.
Again the whole purpose of a cold weather shelter is to prevent exposure related deaths, said Christensen.
Monday night 50 people stayed at the Christian Rescue Mission. They have a total of 60 beds available. At the Community Kitchen, 144 people slept on the floor.
Chattanooga police would only say the victim is a white man. Investigators say they do not suspect foul play.
This is a developing story. Depend on NewsChannel 9 to bring you updates as we get them.

Officials Describe Scene of Chaos During Chattanooga Shooting
Officials on Wednesday released new details of last week's brazen assault in Chattanooga.
They described a chaotic scene of unarmed Marines scrambling to escape the heavily armed man.
One service member inside the building saw Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez approaching and fired at him, likely with a personal weapon.
Abdulazeez shot back, entered the building and fatally wounded Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith.
At the same time, Marines ran from room-to-room, trying to get their fellow service members to safety.
The whole thing ended just a few minutes after it began, as police caught up to Abdulazeez, shooting and killing him — but not before he managed to wound one of them.
A total of 20 Marines and two Navy corpsmen were at the center that day, checking their equipment after a training mission in California.
