11 Prohibitions for Saudi Arabia Women That Are Hard to Believe
What It’s Like to be a Woman in Saudi Arabia. From choosing a husband to using public transit, lots of everyday things we're completely used to are prohibited for women in Saudi Arabia. According to the 2017 Gender Gap report by the World Economic Forum, Saudi Arabia ranks 138th out of 144, making it one of the harshest places for women to live as far as equal rights are concerned.
Women aren’t allowed to move around freely. 1:34
In September 2017, the King of Saudi Arabia announced a major change in the law that will allow women to drive cars starting in June 2018. A woman will still need to get her guardian's permission to drive, though. Taking a train is allowed only in Riyadh, but women still have to use a separate car at the end of the train. As for bus companies, most of them refuse female passengers. In some regions, a woman who takes a cab without her guardian is considered immoral.
They must be covered entirely. 2:38
When on out in public, women in Saudi Arabia cover their entire bodies, with the exception for their face, hands, and feet. A black abaya (a long dress with sleeves) and hijab (a head covering) are the only things a woman can wear. The clothes should be made from thick fabric and baggy so that they don’t highlight a woman’s curves.
They don’t have much choice when it comes to work. 4:06
Women can choose to be doctors, nurses, and educators. Female politicians and lawyers are very rare exceptions. For women, it's much harder to build a career than for men since they’re paid less and don't get benefits like medical insurance.
Women will never answer the door 5:55
Most houses in Saudi Arabia have two entrances: one for men and one for women. Women can hang out with their female friends but only in their half of the house. Male guests can only visit the other half of the house where women aren’t allowed. If a woman needs to tell her husband something, she can call him over the phone.
There is no gender equality. 7:23
A Saudi woman’s word is two times less valuable than a man’s. Just to file a lawsuit, she needs 6 male witnesses. A child can never become a citizen of Saudi Arabia if his father is a foreigner. A man gets two times more when it comes to inheritance, and women in rural areas are usually excluded entirely from the lists of heirs.

Riyadh - Saudi Arabia - Welcome to Arabia - Directors Cut
Saudi Arabia is changing rapidly and it is inviting the world to come and explore. By making tourist visa now widely available, the country is truly opening its doors to the travellers. It’s definitely positive development for the people as the reception of travellers wil change the country for the good.
We were asked to create a series of travel films to showcase the various regions in the country. We pleasantly surprised by the array of gems are to be discovered throughout this vast country, that till date remained fairly undiscovered.
In this film follow Saudi Fatima on a journey showing her friend foreign friend Enza her country.
Note this is a director's cut that is different form the original launched earlier.
Places that are being shown are all around the region of Riyadh:
Historical Diriyah: it’s the historical home of the Saudi state. It was restored by King Abdullah and therefore now a UNESCO heritage site. Entering the site gave us the feeling being lost in a labyrinth guiding you through Saudi’s past. With some imagination you can daydream how ancient civilisations thrived between the walls of the old city. There’s walkways to explore every corner of it, there’s museums to learn about the past and hundreds of photo opportunities.
If you’re interested n strolling around Riyadh’s oldest and the most visited market Souk Al-Zal is your place to go. At his market you can discover the more traditional side of the Saudi culture and influences from other countries like Jemen. The contrast to the razzle-dazzle of the modern high rises and huge shopping malls in the centre is enormous.
Al Masmak Palace Museum in the equally named fortress gives a tour though Saud history. It’s full of objects, reliquaries, foto and video exhibitions. The open spaces in the fortress are great for photography as there’s a particular kind of light hitting the historical walls from above.
The most epic landscape in this region is surely The Edge of the World .. you’ll drive through the vast desert till you reach a spectacular sharp edge where an ancient ocean bed drops a dazzling 300m after it continues to street out to the horizon. There’s some hiking trails and around and you might find some fossils too. Go near sunset and you will be able to get truly amazing footage and photo’s.
Go to the Nadj village restaurant for on of the most immersive traditional Saudi food experiences in term of food and ambience. It’s a true oasis when you want to escape the heat of the day. The air gets moisturised which gives also a mysterious atmosphere. You’ll have you’re in a private space sitting on cushions on the ground seeing how the traditionally dressed waiters bring you mouthwatering food. It’s recommended to explore the other spaces.. we had fun filming here, as it breathes culture and there’s amazing details to capture everywhere.
The Kingdom Tower Skybridge is the main land mark of Riyadh An elevator brings you up to the glass corridor this enormous glas high rise in the heart of the city. From here you can gaze over both sides of the city until your eye gets lost in the desert. Go at sunset to see the light change.. a good time-lapse opportunity here.
At the Abdullah Park there are fountains that are pretty nice at night. There’s a light show with music that can be watched from a huge balcony. Try drive around on a twin bike at night and enjoy the space.

JEDDAH: Makkah Province is “perfectly ready” for the “A Nation Without Illegal Expatriates” national campaign, Mohamed Hussain, spokesman of the Jeddah Passport Department, told Arab News.
Starting Wednesday, undocumented workers in Jeddah and Makkah can go to Al-Shumaisi’s branch of the Passport Department, located on the Jeddah-Makkah expressway, to finalize their departure procedures.
“A special section has been designated for it at the General Services Center in Al-Shumaisi to cover Makkah and Jeddah,” Hussain said.
Al-Shumaisi is one of many centers that will implement the 90-day campaign, which will include all provinces.
The initiative was granted by the Interior Ministry for undocumented workers to correct their status and leave the country without penalties.
Overstayers following the 90-day grace period will risk paying fines. “Violators who don’t initiate correcting their status and get detained will be subject to enforcing the rules and regulations of the labor law and residency system,” Lt. Col. Talal Al-Shalhoub, spokesman of the General Directorate of Passports (GDP), told Arab News.
Violating the residency system entails deportation, a prison sentence and fines. The fine can range between SR15,000 ($4,000) and SR100,000, Gen. Sulaiman Al-Yahya, director general of the Passport Department, told the Saudi state-run news channel Al-Ekhbariya.
Al-Yahya urged violators to make use of the amnesty that exempts them from fines and the consequences associated with the deportee fingerprint system, an opportunity “that may not come again,” he said.
Those who have overstayed their visas for Haj, Umrah, visit or transit should go directly to a border point with a valid passport and confirmed travel tickets.
If an “absent from work (escape or huroob)” notice has been issued, the violator will need to finalize the procedures in the local Expats Affairs Administration first.
Employers of holders of expired “resident identity” (iqama) who did not renew them before the announcement date of the campaign (March 19) shall issue a “final exit” visa online after paying all due fees and fines. Illegal workers should then leave the country.
Pilgrims who entered the country illegally should refer to the local Expat Affairs Administration to obtain a “final exit” visa before going to the designated passport center with their valid passport.
Illegal workers with valid iqama IDs, but who work for different employers or are self-employed and have an “absent from work (escape)” notice, should refer to the local Labor Disputes Committee to obtain a “proof of status” directed to the GDP.
They should then refer to the local Expats Affairs Administration to obtain a “final exit” visa with their passport and iqama ID before leaving the Kingdom.
Workers for an employer in the Red Zone, whose company has more non-Saudi employees than Saudi, should refer to the Labor Ministry to obtain a temporary work permit before going to the local Passport Department with their passport and iqama ID to get a “final exit” visa and leave the country.
According to the campaign, workers can return to the Kingdom on condition they pursue legal methods to gain entry.
Jeddah-based Pakistani Consul General Shehryar Akbar Khan and Indian Consul General Mohammed Noor Rahman Sheikh both urged their nationals to take advantage of the scheme in two separate press statements sent to Arab News.
The Pakistani Consulate said it has made arrangements to assist “Pakistani community members who desire to avail the amnesty scheme announced by the Saudi government.”
The Indian Consulate said it would provide information to Indian expats, and assured “the full cooperation of the consulate in facilitating all Indian nationals who want to go back to their mother land using this opportunity.”
Women in Saudi Arabia: A long road to equality

FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7
In Saudi Arabia, women are considered second-class citizens. They cannot drive or travel without the authorisation of a male guardian: a brother, father, cousin or even a son. But faced with the fall in oil prices and the aspirations of a young generation hooked on social media, the authorities are gradually relaxing the rules. FRANCE 24’s team reports from the kingdom.
In December 2015, amid much publicity, Saudi Arabia held historic elections for municipal councils. For the first time, women had the right to vote and to run for office. Although this was a clear step forward, it remained symbolic as only 21 women were elected to a total of more than 2,000 seats. Since then, things are not necessarily going smoothly for these women in the town halls where they are supposed to have a voice.
In reality, the change is mainly driven by the Saudi authorities’ need to diversify the economy, which is completely dependent on oil revenues. Today, Saudi women are obtaining access to areas that were previously forbidden to them. Some are now lawyers, pharmacists or even appointed to the head of the stock exchange or a large bank.
Another factor that explains this feminine revolution is the demographic reality of the kingdom. Currently, 70 percent of Saudis are under 30 years of age. They are seeking room to breathe in a society suffocated by tradition and religion. Faced with these aspirations, the authorities have decided to relax certain rules and promote sports and entertainment for women. They have also ordered the infamous religious police to slightly loosen their grip on society. Young people are now able to take some liberties with traditional outfits and customs.
For the few activists who continue to fight for true female emancipation, these changes are largely cosmetic. They say the country needs drastic measures, including the end of the male guardianship system and the ban on women driving. Although these subjects appear ultra-sensitive, even some figures close to power admit the changes are necessary. But the road to equality for Saudi women is still long and full of pitfalls.

WADI NAMMAR | RIYADH | SAUDI ARABIA
If you are looking for the perfect place to bond with family and friends, Wadi Namar, south of Riyadh, is surely the one. Its cool scenery of a dam, a lake and modern park that includes a beautiful waterfall keeps visitors coming back for more.
The beautiful valley that runs down to Wadi Hanifah, another popular picnic spot in Utaiqah district, has separate amenities for its male and female visitors, including washrooms with ablution facilities and places marked for prayers with prayer mats available.
According to the Arriyadh Development Authority website, Wadi Namar has undergone an extensive project restoring its green cover. More than 520 palms were planted across the pedestrian walkways, while the heart of the valley received more than 9,500 trees to add to its scenic beauty.
The project included the controlling of flood streams and work improving infrastructure and services, such as local routes, lighting, a corniche overlooking the lake dam, a guidance system, and an improved traffic management system to serve local farm owners and mountain hikers.
The corniche extends along the walkways and has palm trees and public utilities. It also has areas where picnickers can sit and enjoy the view of the lake, and pathways that allow visitors to move between the corniche and the lake.
The afforestation process met scientific standards to guarantee sustainability and match the area’s environmental and climate requirements. The project also involved the landscaping of sidewalks and walkways, with a spacious park where visitors can enjoy their food, another reason why Wadi Namar finds favor with picnickers.
Syed Wasiuzzaman, a regular visitor to the valley, told Arab News: “It is a very pleasant picnic spot, indeed a place to spend time on the weekend with kids and the family.”
The spacious park has playing facilities for children that makes it a really good place to go with the family, he said adding, “We are planning to visit on Eid day.” He pointed out that if the fishing were allowed in the lake, it would add even more fun to the visit.
He said that the valley and its modern facilities form a beautiful escape from the city’s busy life.
Visitors who return to this beautiful valley cite many reasons for its popularity. It is a great place to take fabulous photos of the surroundings and the lake, to unwind and relax by the lake with family, to have barbecues — a big favorite — and to enjoy its glorious and calming beauty at night.
