Montserrat, Catalonia - Spain 4K Travel Channel
Montserrat is about 40 km north-west of Barcelona. Montserrat is at the same time name of the monastery and of sand stone mountains. It is one of the landmarks of Catalonia. The highest peak, Sant Jeroni is 1,236 m high. From Barcelona we go by train in about 30 minutes to the lower cableway station, built 1930 by the Leipzig company Adolf Bleichert & Co. A cable car takes us up to the monastery of Montserrat, which is located at an altitude of 720 m.
Apart from the cable car, there is a winding road and since 2003 a rack railway to the monastery. From there you can take a funicular railway to the summit of the mountain. Another funicular railway brings you down to the holy cave where the dark Madonna, since 1880 the patron saint of Catalonia, was allegedly found.
Of course, the mountain can also be reached by foot over steep trails.
The monastery from the 12th century is visited by many pilgrims, who worship the Black Madonna, which can be seen in the apse of the monastery church. Approximately 80 monks live here today.
In addition, the monastery is known for its boys' choir Escolania de Montserrat, which is proved documentary since 1307. Every day around 13.00 they sing the Marian hymn Virolai the in the church.
Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey is famous for its spectacular location, but also as a symbol of Catalan nationalism. During the Franco dictatorship it enjoyed religious privileges. It was not subordinated to the bishops appointed by Franco, and therefore the holy masses in the monastery were celebrated in Catalan, which was forbidden in the rest of the country. During our visit we got an impression.
On the square in front of the church the people are dancing the Sardana.
In 1881, Pope Leo XII declared the church a Basilica minor.
The Montserrat monastery is a Benedictine abbey. Here, St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, took his vow.
Adjoined to the monastery is a library of 200,000 volumes and an archaeological museum.

Escolanía de Montserrat o.l.v. Bernat Vivancos

Escolania de Montserrat is one of the oldest music schools in Europe. By the 13th century, a small group of boys were already serving in the Benedictine abbey and Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montserrat through the singing and playing of different musical instruments. Throughout the centuries, many remarkable composers and performers were spawned from the so-called Montserrat Music School. Under the direction and teaching (1953-1997) of Fr. Ireneu Segarra, the Escolania became internationally recognized on a greater scale, recording many CDs and started to participate in festivals as well as touring many countries. Over the last few years, the Escolania has done tours of United States, Russia, China, Holland, Puerto Rico, Hungary, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy and Poland, as well as many concerts in Catalonia. The choir has recorded the CDs Moreneta en sou, poems by Jacint Verdaguer accompanied by the music of Àngel Rodamilans, and the CD “In Montibus Sanctis” with the choral work of the last director of the choir, Bernat Vivancos. Over these years, the choir has been conducted by Mstislav Rostropovitx, Sir Neville Marriner, Salvador Mas, Michael Boder, Harry Bicket, Kirill Petrenko and Jordi Savall. Throughout this time, it has collaborated with a variety of orchestras, such as Orquestra de Cadaqués, Musica Ducis Brabantiae from Holland, the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, Le Concert des Nations and Capella Reial de Catalunya, Orquestra de l’Acadèmia del Gran Teatre del Liceu, and Orquestra Nacional de Cambra d'Andorra. The Escolania performed in Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona, in the opera Pikovaia Dama by Piotr Txaikovski (season 2002-2003, and 2009-2010), and in the opera A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Benjamin Britten (season 2004-2005), which received the Midem prize of 2006. Nowadays, the Escolania is made up of more than 50 boys, ranging from 9 to 14 years old, coming from all across Catalonia. While they are studying at Montserrat, they cover the last years of Primary School and the first years of Secondary School, and also Music Studies. Each chorister plays two instruments, the piano and another instrument of their choice. All the students receive music lessons in class, play in the orchestra and of course sing in the choir, for which the Escolania specializes in. Most of the choristers, when they leave Montserrat, follow on with their musical studies, especially over the last decades, where some have developed into remarkable singers, instrumentalists and conductors. Today, the aim of the Escolania as in the past, is the daily participation in the prayer of the sanctuary, singing in front of a very large audience of pilgrims who come from all over the world. It is one of the objectives of the Escolania to spread sacred music, both that of the music of composers of Montserrat School and internationally renowned composers. Through their singing, the choristers (called escolans in Catalan) are messengers of peace and beauty. Using the universal language of music, they cross all kinds of boundaries and speak directly to the hearts of the people who listen to them sing.

The choir school of the monastery of Montserrat (Escolania de Montserrat) dates back to the XIII century. It is here, in the heart of Catalonia, that the Benedictine Abbey of Montserrat is located, where the tradition of teaching choral singing has been preserved for 800 years. For centuries, 50 boys between the ages of 9 and 14 have been living in a boarding school at the monastery and are only at home once a week. Here they take a high school course and get a General musical education: they play musical instruments, perform in a choir and orchestra.

Montserrat monastery
Magnificent views of Catalans landscape
The mountain Montserrat with the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat lies about 45 km northwest of Barcelona. The about 1,200-meter-high mountain is a grand sight from far away already. From the top, you can experience a view far into the landscape of Catalonia.
Arriving by car or motorcycle on well-developed hairpin bends and curves is a foretaste of what you can expect on the summit of Montserrat.
Once you have arrived in the Montserrat monastery, you can experience an indescribable view up to Barcelona. The city itself is hidden behind the Tibidabo mountain.
The monastery of Montserrat is no specific architectural landmark, however exciting is the backdrop in which the ruins are build. Many of the tourists travel there only to see the statue of the Black Madonna, patron saint of Catalonia. The figure of the 12th century thrones above the high altar in the basilica of the monastery. In honour of her Gregorian chants will be sang daily by about 50 boys from the Escolania de Montserrat, the monestary's boarding school (Monday-Friday 12.00 by the boys' choir , Sat sang by the monks and Sunday by the boys' choir again).
In the Museum of Montserrat monastery, you can see works of major artists such as Dali, El Greco, Monet or Giordano. In addition, you can see liturgical and archaeological exhibits.
There is a restaurant in the lower parts of the grounds of the monastery where you can get food and drinks at a fair price.
Hiking in the Montserrat nature park
From the monastery, it is another 300 metres up to the peak of the Montserrat. A funicular goes almost all the way up to the summit. From there several good and well-marked hiking trails lead through the nature park Montserrat. Several hiking trails of different lengths lead from the summit station of the funicular to the deserted hermitages. It is worth the effort - you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of Catalonia. Though the trails are well-developed, you should wear sturdy shoes and be in good condition in order to manage the hike. Please don't leave the marked hiking trails so that the fragile and austere vegetation doesn't get destroyed.
History of Montserrat
The mountain Montserrat has been of religious significance since pre-Christian time. Before Christ a temple to worship Venus was built by the Romans. In the first written mention of 888 the adoption of the construction by the first monastery of 880 AD was reported. They were hermit monks, who built various hermitages on the Montserrat. The monastery was founded by expanding the hermitage of Santa Maria 1025.
Miracles were attributed to the in the 12th Century found Black Madonna. It is still the target of pilgrimages. A strong growth period of the monastery is due to those miracles.
Numerous famous personalities pilgrimage to the Montserrat: Pope Benedigt XIII., Columbus, Cervantes, von Humboldt, King Fernando and Isabella, Carlos I, Felipe II. and Louis XIV..
Columbus named an Antilles island Montserrat on his second trip in 1493.
In 1811, the monastery was largely destroyed by Napoleonic troops. The Benedictine monastery was rebuilt.
At the time of the Franco dictatorship the monastery put up resistance. Despite the ban, Catalan was still spoken and fairs were held in Catalan, many hundreds of persecutees of the Franco regime were hiding there. More than 20 monks were executed as a result.
This resistance makes the monastery an important symbol of Catalan self-evident and the fight against oppression. The Catalans are still grateful today.
Getting to Montserrat monastery
Arriving by car
Whoever is going there by car or motorcycle, truly enjoys one of the most beautiful serpentine streets of Spain.
The approach is quite simple: A2 motorway, exit Martorell, then the National Road N II, to the junction Montserrat. From Barcelona's centre about 70 km to go.
You can see the peculiar shape of the mountain from the highway. Montserrat is English for sawed mountain.
If you are not using your own car, but still prefer a car, a rental car is a cheap and convenient solution.
Arriving by train
The trip by train to Montserrat takes about 1.5 hours. A special highlight of the Route is certainly the trip by cable car or cog railway Cremallera up the hill.
Get off at the subway station in the Plaça Espanya train the FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat) in the R5 line in the direction of Manresa. The train departs hourly from 08:36.
At the station Aeri de Montserrat change to the cable car, or go one more stop to Monistrol de Montserrat. From there, every 20 minutes a rack railway runs up to Montserrat, directly to the monastery.

Lyrics (Jacint Verdaguer 1845-1902):
Ara n'és el mes de maig,
regalada primavera,
de totes les seves flors
mon amor és la més bella.
Vindran l'estiu i l'hivern
no se'n veurà cap en terra
sinó la del meu amor
que de totes és la reina.
Si giro els ulls al cel
la comparo amb les estrelles,
boniques són les que ovir,
mes totes les senyoreja.
Com el lliri als galdirons,
com l'abet a les ginestes,
elles duraran mil anys,
la mia amor és eterna.
Montserrat, The Virolai by L'Escolania de Montserrat
The Virolai is a hymn dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat, which over time has become a spiritual and patriotic symbol of Catalans. Montserrat is a multi-peaked mountain located near the city of Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. It is part of the Catalan pre-coastal range. The main peaks are Saint Jeroni (1,236 m), Montgrós (1, 120 m) and Miranda de les Agulles (903 m). It is well known as the site of the Benedictine abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat sanctuary and which is identified by some with the location of the Holy Grail in Arthurian myth.
Montserrat literally means jagged (serrated) mountain in Catalan. It describes its peculiar aspect with multitude of rock formations which are visible from a great distance. The mountain is composed of strikingly pink conglomerate, a form of sedimentary rock.
Our gratitude to Joan Grífols and Lukasz Dzierzanowski among others for their beautiful pictures.
