In Évora? You should visit this - Escoural cave, Portugal
Escoural Cave has been on our wish list for months now and we finally got a chance to visit a unique place with vestiges of human occupation dating back to 50,000 years B.C.
History
Discovered in 1963 it quickly became clear the importance of this site and a series of archaeological investigations began that very year. Now you can visit the interpretative centre of the Escoural Cave to learn more about its history and see it's permanent exposition.
It's quite remarkable that traces of the Upper Paleolithic and end of the Neolithic period can be found here. The cave is quite small but certainly beautiful with a large room and multiple galleries you will not be disappointed. The main attraction is the rock art elements present in the cave, especially animal figures like horses, bovines and other animals but also abstract figures.
Visit
You need to book a visit in order to go to the cave and you must do so at least 24 hours in advance. There are some restrictions in place to ensure the safety of the visitors and the preservation of the site so to visit the limit of people at any time in the cave cannot be higher than 10. The walkways are very well-designed considering the limited space they are well maintained and get you as close to the rock art as possible.
Also of note is that photos and video are not allowed except if you have an authorization from DRCALEN.
The guide speaks English and is very knowledgeable about every aspect of the site and as a lot of peculiar information about the discovery and study of Escoural Cave.
What about kids?
Well, we took our 3-year-old and we can say that he didn't really enjoy it that much, the space is quite limited and for obvious reason, you can't go around touching everything you see, both of which are some of his favourite things. After a couple of days, he did talk about it and we noticed being in a cave left a strong impression but during the visit not that much.
Unless your child is quite calm and enjoys listening to this might not be the most enjoyable experience for both him and you. We had to be constantly keeping him entertained and that meant we couldn't really pay full attention to the guide.

The prices are extremely affordable for what you get, a guided tour for €3 is not common.

The visits are conducted within Tuesday to Saturday except for the last Saturday each month and holidays.

Ainda antes de terminar o ano e de chegar o Natal, lançamos o novo documentário da Morbase tendo como tema A Gruta do Escoural. Para este documentário contámos com as participações do arqueólogo da DRCALEN, António Carlos Silva, e da Hermínia Santos do Serviço de Património Cultural do Município de Montemor-o-Novo.
Descoberta numa tarde de Abril de 1963, após uma explosão de uma pedreira, a Gruta do Escoural revelou-se um sítio incontornável para a história da arqueologia em Portugal.
Aquilo que a Gruta do Escoural representa hoje, transcende o seu valor turístico, e assume-se como uma referência internacional para a arte do Paleolítico enquanto ponto mais ocidental da Europa com este tipo representações artísticas da Pré-História.

Montemor-o-Novo is a Portuguese city, in the District of Évora, in the middle of Alentejo.
Calm and quiet region but with an important place in national history. Here D. Manuel I decided to have the sea route discovered for India. It was also an important stage of battles with a great capacity of resistance.
The whole surrounding region owns great natural beauties, a zone of water and electric use, possessing several dams, land where simplicity reigns.
Among the points of interest, be sure to visit what remains of the Castle, the former Convent of St. Domingos (today the Archaeological Museum), the picturesque Fountain of the village, the Church and crypt of St. John of God or the beautiful Convent of Our Lady of the Greeting.
The region also has a rich archaeological heritage, including megalithic monuments such as Menires da Pedra Longa, Anta da Comenda da Igreja, Anta dos Tourais, Anta da Velada, Anta de São Brissose and the fantastic Cave of Escoural.
The region's handicrafts highlight works of basketry, leather and skin and the famous liquor of poejo.

Paço dos Alcaides 3D - Montemor o Novo 1534
Hoje uma ruína, é possível com a reconstrução virtual 3D recuperar a monumentalidade daquele que, outrora, foi um edifício importante na história de Portugal. A iniciativa Montemor-o-Novo 1534, enquadrada dentro do projecto Morbase – plataforma de divulgação do património histórico e cultural do Município de Montemor-o-Novo – iniciou-se em 2015 com a apresentação do documentário ‘Santa Maria do Bispo 3D’. Na sua génese está a intenção de, através das novas tecnologias e da investigação científica, valorizar o monumento singular que é o Castelo de Montemor-o-Novo, possibilitando uma melhor compreensão do espaço intra-muros pela comunidade e pelos visitantes que, diariamente, o percorrem.

Santa Maria do Bispo 3D - Montemor-o-Novo 1534
Localizada no interior do recinto amuralhado do Castelo de Montemor-o-Novo, a Igreja de Santa Maria do Bispo era a principal igreja da antiga vila no século XVI. O documentário “Santa Maria do Bispo 3D – Montemor-o-Novo 1534″ conta a história desta igreja, hoje um monumento em ruínas, reconstruída através das novas tecnologias e do conhecimento científico adquirido graças às fontes históricas, aos registos pictóricos e aos paralelos arquitectónicos. Realizado por Rui Cacilhas e Pedro Grenha, com a reconstrução virtual 3D a cargo de Carlos Carpetudo e Gonçalo Lopes, este documentário é uma iniciativa do Município de Montemor-o-Novo.

Entre a Ecopista de Montemor e Escoural
Em Montemor temos uma Ecopista com cerca de 13 km, com 5 km em alcatrão e, o resto em terra batida, que termina na Torre da Gadanha. As imagens iniciais deste video são desse percurso em terra, que não dá problemas para uma roda fina. Depois, segui na Nacional 253 para São Cristovão e antes de chegar à localidade, virei à esquerda para Escoural numa estrada regional com piso irregular mas que dá muito gozo fazer.
