Eski Gumus Monastery, Turkey
Visited it on 2nd April 2014. In guide it is described as hidden pearl of Turkey. It's indeed so - no tourist and, very interesting, relatively intact and nice monastery. Most probably an Greek monastery.

The church of EskiGumus in-cave monastery has very nice fresco, which can be seen in video.

We rose early and ate breakfast at our hotel. To even further cement our love of the place, this hotel had a menu and you could choose anything from it to have for breakfast, for free. I had an omelette, Scott had pancakes, and Simon had French toast - we were grateful for a non-traditional Turkish breakfast after 20 days of bread, cucumbers, and cheese! We spoke with our hotelier about our horseback riding, and booked in a tour of the Rose Valley for the following afternoon. They then called in a guy who organises the balloon tours, and after consulting the weather information for the week, he suggested that the 8th - the morning we were going to leave Cappadocia - would be the best time for a balloon tour. We agreed, since it is an early-morning tour and would still leave us time to make the long drive we were planning to do that day. All booked up, we set off to get a start on our plans for the day.
The first stop was the underground city at Derinkuyu. Cappadocia is full of cave cities, cave houses, and other structures carved into the soft rock by Christians in the 8th - 13th centuries, who were fleeing persecution by camping out here. Derinkuyu is one of those cave cities. Scott had fond memories of coming here with his parents on his first Turkey trip, and how great it was that as a little kid, he could explore the city with much greater ease and agility than his parents. We parked at a church just outside the entrance to the city. Some little old ladies in colourful Turkish garb were sitting on the kerb making tiny dolls; they directed us to the entrance and we descended into a maze of dark, cramped, musty, and impossible-to-photograph passageways. The path was marked with arrows so we couldn't get too lost, although we all agreed that having the freedom to get lost in there woudl have made the experience even better.
Derinkuyu was originally huge, but we were not allowed into many of the passageways due to their instability. We did get to see a chapel, the kitchen/refectory, many living quarters, storage areas, and endless nooks and crannies. Exploring in there was a lot like mapping out a Dungeons and Dragons level! Simon and I were feeling a bit claustrophobic though, especially in the tunnels where even I, at 5'2, had to double over to get through. (Simon took a shot of me doubled over from behind ... so, yeah, pretty much just a butt shot ... trying to make the point that even this shorty had to bend over, but I made him delete it!) I couldn't imagine living there for six months at a time, although the sheer desperation of the Cappadocian Christians' situation was qutie clear by their willingness to do just that to avoid persecution. The security of these cities was very tight, by medieval standards; huge stone slabs could be rolled across the hallways to seal them up and prevent intrusion. Exactly how they were moved into and out of place was left a mystery.
Next we drove 80 km or so toward Niğde to see the Eski Gümüşler Monastery, a rock-cut and sprawling complex built in the 10th century and that covered the equivalent of 2 or 3 city-blocks of land. Although nearly all of the monks' hovels were intact and accessible, carved into the side of the huge rock jutting up out of the ground, we were not able to spend much time there, so we didn't explore anything except the monastery main grounds. The monastery was centred around a large courtyard full of holes which once had been used as graves. On the north side of the monastery was the chapel, which we saved for last, opting to instead explore the refectory and other smaller chambers off the courtyard.
Most of the monastery was plain, ascetic in nature; simple red ochre line patterns were the only hint of colour inside. However, when we walked into the church, we entered into an explosion of colour. Beautiful frescoes decorated every surface of the room, including the pillars which supported the high vaulted ceiling. Many of the frescoes depicted Mary and/or Jesus, and the monastery's piece d'resistance, tucked away into a dark corner and completely unlit to preserve its integrity, was a fresco painting of Mary, holding the baby Jesus, with a soft smile on her face. It is ...

Türkiye'de Issız Bir Köydeyim! - NİĞDE | GÜMÜŞLER MANASTIRI
Merhabalar.
Hello. I haven't made a video for a long time. Changes in my life prevented me from dealing with Youtube. Now I've decided to come back. In this video, I visited Gümüşler Monastery, an old settlement in Niğde, Gümüşler (Eskigümüş - Yenigümüş). The reason I prefer it is because my grandmother is from here. I came here for the first time and observed life in the village. Obviously there was not a lot of people. I can say it was deserted. You don't need to be scared because it's deserted. I've not encountered a danger other than bees and gigantic lizards. I added English subtitles to the video. I hope you will like it. Do not forget to subscribe to my channel.

(Eski Gumusler) -
