Lockerbie Wildlife Trust: Eskrigg Nature Reserve: An Abundance of Red Squirrels
The Eskrigg Nature Reserve, on the eastern edge of Lockerbie, is home to a healthy population of our native Red Squirrels. Only a century ago this charismatic little rodent could be found pretty much anywhere in the UK, but since the introduction of the American Grey Squirrel it has been driven further and further northwards with only a few exceptions. The larger Grey not only out-competes the Red for food and habitat, but it also carries the deadly squirrelpox virus that causes the agonising death of every infected Red within a week. It is really important that we protect the remaining native Red Squirrels by controlling the spread of the invasive Grey Squirrel.

1019-102115 MEGA cute red squirrel eating!
Please see accompanying photoset:
This was taken during my fall hiking trip near Lutsen, MN in 2015. On the Superior Hiking Trail near Devil Track River, I saw this little red squirrel that was SO CUTE, one might even consider it MEGA cute. Anyways, it was filling up it's tummy with a tasty cone. It's interesting all the work they have to do, when the seeds in those things are so small! So when you're out hiking, and you see those little piles of on the side of the trail, that's how they get to be like that :) ! Enjoy and share!
