Many people know Eslite as one of the largest bookstores in Taiwan. It was established by Rober We Ching-yu in 1989 and his first humble book shop was located in Dunhua Taipei. They started selling art and humanities related books before their first 24 hour bookstore in Taiwan.
Now, they have a total of 48 branches, 4 music stores, retail shopping mall called Eslite Spectrum and their first hotel, The Eslite Hotel. Understanding the history of Eslite gives me the idea of the expectation of the hotel.
I stayed in many different hotels around Asia and some parts of the world. This one goes into the list of one of the most unique hotels I’ve stayed. This is not one of those super luxurious hotels or stunning design hotels ever but the concept is rather unique.

Although it was a long weekend in Taipei, there were two typhoons just hovering over the island to ruin the what would have been an amazing outdoor weekend. So what else could we do? Well this bookstore/hipster's destination is what I thought was surprisingly packed with locals and tourists. I was brought to the bookstore by a local friend of mine and I never expect such space where from 5 to 95 year olds would enjoy! It's just incredible to see everyone so consumed with reading but instead of reading their phones, they had books in their hands. Personally, I think this is definitely one of the local cultures you should experience in Taiwan.

Eslite to close 24-hour bookstore at Dunnan Financial Building
Now for booklovers across Taipei. The popular 24-hour Eslite bookstore is moving out of Dunnan Financial Building. The bookstore plans to leave when its lease expires in 2020, but chairwoman Mercy Wu said it would reopen with the same 24-hour service. Dunnan Financial Building itself will close for renovation that same year. The building operator plans to add 5,000 ping of floor space over a three-year renovation project.Eslite''s 24-hour bookstore in Dunhua South Road is a favorite among night owls. But once its lease expires in 2020, this haven for bookworms will close up shop. The building it''s based in has applied for urban renewal. The application has already passed environmental assessment.Huang Li-linTaipei environment officialAccording to the contractor''s timeline, the project will take about three years from demolition to the completion of construction.After renovation, the building will be 28 stories high, with six basement levels. It will be leased out to restaurants, financial service providers, retailers, and other businesses. The renovated building will be valued at over NT$20 billion, experts say. Hsu Chin-huangFinance expertThe building currently has around 15,000 pings of floor space. After renovation, it''s expected to have over 20,000 pings. This alone can increase its value by 20 to 30%. The market rate in this area is currently NT$2,600 per ping. After renovation, one ping could jump above NT$3,000 or even NT$3,500. Eslite''s chairwoman Mercy Wu says there are plans to reopen the 24-hour bookstore after it closes.

Our first day in Taipei, Taiwan. After my morning walk to the park, Mrs Silverfox and I head out together, first to a local market and then to the Eslite Spectrum Mall. This place was awesome. It's right next to the Zhongshan MRT station and is a Mall that seems to be full of awesome. Unlike so many malls. It wasn't full of the same tired old brands we see everywhere around the world. Instead it was full of cool one off designs and local designers products. Add to that some amazing arts and crafts shops and you can be sure Mr's Silverfox was in heaven.
