Esperance - Out Of The Way
Welcome to the Esperance -- it's Out of the way, out of this world!!
Esperance, roughly translated, is French for hope and it was the French that are credited with the town's discovery, naming it and other local landmarks whilst sheltering from a storm in this area in 1792.
Ten years on Matthew Flinders sailed the glorious waters of the Bay of Isles, discovering and naming gems such as Lucky Bay and Thistle Cove.
Whalers, sealers and pirates followed, as did pastoralists and miners, keen to cash in on free land and a gold boom to the north at Kalgoorlie.
Today's population of this delightful town is over 14,000, tourism, agriculture and fishing steer the economy of this stunning coastal community.
The Australian Traveller Magazine judged Esperance on March 25th, 2009 the most beautiful Town in Western Australia and the second most beautiful in the whole of Australia.
How to get there? Well!
First a flight to Western Australia's capital city Perth, then, from Perth a short 1.5hr flight to Esperance or a 721km country drive, through the wheat belt via Wagin and Lake Grace.
Allow a few days for your stay. A week or more is recommended to see most attractions including the most beautiful scenery and some of the whitest beaches in Australia. However it will take a lot longer to see all that is on offer in the region.
The best times to visit are between July/September, when you have the best chances to see some Whales and the beginning of Wildflower season.
Ok, let's imagine that you're in Esperance. To ensure that you have a better experience; your first stop should be at the Esperance Visitor Centre, where the staff will happily assist you.
There are loads of things to see and do here. Self-drive or organised tours will take you out to Cape Le Grand National Park and the Great Ocean Drive, where you'll find the most beautiful beaches.
On the way to the National Park you can visit the Esperance Stonehenge; just outside of town you can go for a walk in the nature reserves, visit the Bird and Animal Park and the Dalyup River Winery.
And right in town we have the unique Mermaid Leather display and the Municipal Museum. Various art galleries can be found in and around Esperance too. And while on the coast, make sure you ask about the cruises to take you out to the islands of the Recherché Archipelago.

Esperance Museum - Top Tourist Parks - Discover Downunder
TV presenters of Discover Downunder, Tim Smith and Brooke Hanson are visiting the coastal town of Esperance in Western Australia.
They are visiting the Esperance Museum and checking out the Skylab, the USA's first space station which orbited the earth between 1973 to 1979.
Tim and Brooke talk to Merve Andre about the re- entry of Skylab into the Earths atmosphere. The heaviest fragments of the station fell into the Southern Indian Ocean, and a large amount of Skylab debris fell in the coastal town of Esperance.
Esperance Pictorial - Western Australia.
Esperance is a larger coastal town and port. Has a nice museum park and museum too.
Nice beaches and is popular for boating and water sports and fishing. The town is well laid out and there's a lot to do in that area.

Esperance Downunder
Esperance Diving. Esperance has over 140 islands in the Recherché Archipelago and subsequently many wonderful dive sites to choose from. The islands are washed by crystal clear turquoise water. These granite intrusions provide large caves, boulders and swim-throughs for the diver to explore. The temperate water is the perfect environment for the prolific growth of colourful soft corals and sponges. These line the caves and boulders and the array of colour is breath taking. Esperance is also blessed with areas of hard coral. This is usually in the form of plate coral and is always teeming with tiny colourful fish.
EARLY ESPERANCE WA
Esperance is a town in Western Australia, located on the south coast around half-way between Albany and the South Australian border; 7 hours drive and 1 hour flight from the capital, Perth. Its population at the 2006 census was 14,450 and its major industries are tourism, agriculture, and fishing.
[edit] History
Esperance location in Western AustraliaEuropean history dates back to 1627 when the Dutch vessel Gulden Zeepaert, skippered by François Thijssen, passed through the blue waters off the Esperance coast.
French explorers are credited with making the first landfall near the present day town, naming it and other local landmarks whilst sheltering from a storm in this area in 1792. The town itself was named after the French ship, the L'Espérance,[2] commanded by Bruni d'Entrecasteaux. Esperance, roughly translated, is French for 'hope'.
In 1802, British navigator Matthew Flinders sailed the Bay of Isles, discovering and naming places such as Lucky Bay and Thistle Cove. Whalers, sealers and pirates followed, as did pastoralists and miners, keen to exploit the free land and cash in on the gold boom in the gold fields to the north.
The area of the Esperance townsite was first settled by the Dempsters, a pioneer family of Scottish descent, in the 1870s.[3] A telegraph station was opened in 1876, although the formal gazettal of the townsite did not occur until 1893.
In 1979, pieces of the space station Skylab crashed onto Esperance after the craft broke up over the Indian Ocean. The municipality fined the United States $400 for littering. The fine was never paid. Skylab's demise was an international media event, with merchandising, wagering on time and place of re-entry and nightly news reports. The San Francisco Examiner offered a $10,000 prize for the first piece of Skylab to be delivered to their offices. 17-year-old Stan Thornton scooped a few pieces of Skylab off the roof of his home in Esperance, Western Australia and caught the first flight to San Francisco, where he collected his prize. [4]
In January 2007, Esperance experienced a torrential storm with wind gusts of up to 110km/h and brought 155mm of rainfall within 24 hours, causing significant flooding. More than 100 homes were damaged, several boats were destroyed, trees were felled and 35m of bridge on the South Coast Highway, the main road linking Esperance to Perth, was washed away. The Western Australian Government declared the area a natural disaster zone. Over 25,000 sheep were killed in the storm.[5][6]
[edit] Facilities
There are five primary schools in the region, Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School, Castletown Primary School, Esperance Primary School, Nulsen Primary School and Seventh Day Adventist Primary School. There are also two secondary schools: Esperance Senior High School and Esperance Anglican College which opened at the start of 2008. Curtin TAFE also has a campus in the town.
[edit] Tourism
Near the town itself are numerous beaches, offering surfing, scuba diving, and swimming. Also nearby are a number of salt lakes, including the Pink Lake, which gains its rosy hue from red algae living within its waters. Esperance is most noted for its coastline and has been voted Australia's best beaches, Australia's whitest sand and Western Australia's most popular beach. Esperance is also home to the Cyclops wave, extremely heavy with massive amounts of water unloading on shallow reef. Cyclops is featured in the surfing films Billabong Odyssey, and the Bra Boys documentary.
There are five major national parks near the town. A major nearby tourist attraction, 20 minutes away from the town centre, is the Cape Le Grand National Park, which offers a picturesque coast of largely granite terrain and sheltered white sand beaches. The park is a popular spot for recreational fishing, as well as four wheel drive enthusiasts and hikers. Esperance also has a number of wind turbines supplying electricity to the town which is an amassing site.[7] Late 2007 a television advertisement promoting one of the newer Ferrari cars was filmed on Esperance's foreshore, to be shown overseas.

Esperance Flora
Esperance Flora. Captain Matthew Flinders anchored near Lucky Bay for five nights, January of 1802, it afforded the botanist on board, Robert Brown, an outstanding opportunity to study the rich, and largely unknown, flora of the south coast. Although it was not the best time of the year for wildflowers, Brown managed to add a hundred or so new species to those he had discovered earlier at Albany. Brown must have been struck, as we are today, by the high proportion of species falling into three characteristic southern Australian families. Here are a few samples of wildflowers found in the Esperance region; we have tried our best to name them correctly for you, but do not guarantee they are all correct.
SKYLAB Debris and Monument ( Esperance )
Skylab, a science and engineering laboratory, was launched into Earth’s orbit by a Saturn V rocket on 14 May 1973.
Skylab was the first space station the United States launched into orbit, and the second space station ever visited by human crew.
The 100 ton space station was in Earth’s orbit from 1973 to 1979, and was visited by crews three times in 1973 and 1974.
There was a plethora of UV astronomy experiments done during the Skylab lifetime, as well as detailed X-ray studies of the sun. It included a laboratory for studying the effects of microgravity and the Apollo Telescope Mount solar observatory.
Skylab began its final orbits on 10 July 1979.On 11 July 1979, US space officials tried valiantly to control the tumbling space craft, hoping it would fall safely into the Atlantic Ocean.
At 12:30am on 12 July 1979, the doomed spacecraft crossed the Indian Ocean heading towards Esperance, burning and breaking up as it sped along it’s fiery path.
It rose in the southwest, a spectacular streak of colour and within two minutes before reaching the opposite horizon it had broken up into about 20 large pieces.
Over the following days, many pieces of Skylab debris, small and large, were found scattered over the Esperance townsite and farming areas. Today, a number of these valuable and historic pieces can be seen here at the Esperance Museum.

Historic Esperance STORY. Aden Maru docked at the James St Jetty in 1931, prior to the second World War, loading Wheat. Its future told: A Japanese convoy transporting around 20,000 troops, en route from Shanghai to reinforce the Japanese garrison, was attacked by the American submarine USS Jack. On May 6th 1944, their torpedoes sank three transports, one being Aden Maru (5,824 tons). Nearly half of the troops that embarked at Shanghai were lost.
