She entered service on 21 December 1996.
In 2008, after some twelve years of service as Galaxy, she was renamed Celebrity Galaxy. In May 2009, she was transferred to the fleet of TUI Cruises, a joint venture between TUI AG and Celebrity Cruises' owner Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. She was renamed Mein Schiff (English: My Ship) on 15 May 2009 and Mein Schiff 1 in November 2010. In March 2017, it was announced that the ship would join the Marella Fleet in May 2018 and would be renamed TUI Explorer
In October 2017, it was announced that the ship will start operating under the company's new brand name Marella Explorer, after a Yard Refit in Cadiz.

Cartagena (Spanish pronunciation: [kaɾtaˈxena]; Latin: Carthago Nova) is a Spanish city and a major naval station located in the Region of Murcia, by the Mediterranean coast, south-eastern Spain. As of January 2011, it has a population of 218,210 inhabitants, being the Region’s second largest municipality and the country’s 6th non-Province capital city. The metropolitan area of Cartagena, known as Campo de Cartagena, has a population of 409,586 inhabitants.
Cartagena has been inhabited for over two millennia, being founded around 227 BC by the Carthaginian Hasdrubal the Fair as Qart Hadasht (Phoenician, meaning 'New Town') the same name as the original city of Carthage. The city had its heyday during the Roman Empire, when it was known as Carthago Nova (the New Carthage) and Carthago Spartaria, capital of the province of Carthaginensis. It was one of the important cities during the Umayyad invasion of Hispania, under its Arabic name of Qartayannat al-Halfa.
Much of the historical weight of Cartagena in the past goes to its coveted defensive port, one of the most important in the western Mediterranean. Cartagena has been the capital of the Spanish Navy's Maritime Department of the Mediterranean since the arrival of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century. As far back as the 16th century it was one of the most important naval ports in Spain, together with Ferrol in the North. It is still an important naval seaport, the main military haven of Spain, and is home to a large naval shipyard.
The confluence of civilizations as well as its strategic harbour, together with the rise of the local mining industry is manifested by a unique artistic heritage, with a number of landmarks such as the Roman Theatre, the second largest of the Iberian Peninsula after the one in Mérida, an abundance of Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine and Moorish remains, and a plethora of Art Nouveau buildings, a result of the bourgeoisie from the early 20th century. Cartagena is now established as a major cruise ship destination in the Mediterranean and an emerging cultural focus.
It is the first of a number of cities that eventually have been named Cartagena, most notably Cartagena de Indias (Cartagena of the Indies) in Colombia

EUROPE part 2 Travelogue - Paris, Milan, Cinque Terre, Tuscany, Rome
This epic Europe trip we started from Singapore-London-Edinburgh-Isle of Skye-Amsterdam-Paris-Cinque Terre-Siena-Rome and back to Singapore (24,782 km in total). Each country/city is distinctively different yet unique. Part 2 of our travelogue features Paris, Milan, Cinque Terre, Tuscany and Rome.
Paris, the city of love with an unending list of iconic places to visit. Though both Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower were filled with the usual streams of tourist, they are both definitely worth a visit. Champs Elysees was of course a nice area to shop at and not forgetting the Lafayette building. One of the highlights of being in Paris was having lunch with Michelle and Eric at a one Michelin Star restaurant where we tried the very authentic French main – rabbit meat. Its not as bad as we thought! Montmartre was an eyeopener, watching talented street artists sketching life-liked portraits. Lastly, we did what most tourists would do, which was braving the crowd to see the one and only Mona Lisa at the Louvre.
Milan was a short stopover but Duomo was definitely a sight to behold. We randomly walked into a cafe for lunch and then had the best ice coffee in our lives! (I swear upon my life it’s freaking awesome). Another learning experience was driving inside certain restricted zones in Milan and then learning more about the District C restriction.
Cinque Terre was magical, especially in winter. The weather was much bearable comparing to summer and there wasn’t any crowd at all. We would recommend taking the train into Cinque Terre because the villages are sitting along the hills near the coast, thus making driving difficult and time consuming.
Tuscany was lovely where Siena was a quaint city with hardly any tourists. We took a slow stroll to Piazza del Campo to have our dinner which was a beautiful place to be at. The Tower of Pisa was preserved very well and definitely an interesting photo spot where 9/10 of tourist were attempting to ‘lean’ / ‘push’ it. We (the girls) then went to The Mall for some crazy shopping.
Rome was an alluring city with all the ancient architectures. We covered lots of places by going for 2 tours. We went to the Vatican City Museum, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter Basilica, Colosseum, Palestine Hills and Roman Forum – ticking off many items off our Bucket’s List.
