Video and stills of Essaouira in Morocco. It starts with the fishing port, loops round some of the ramparts surrounding the old town, then explores the maze of peeling alleys within. Residential, shopping and tourist areas are covered from early morning through to sunset and starry night skies. After snaps of some of the locals we head off to a nearby market then finish at a small waterfall in the countryside.

Watching the noisy, angry & aggressive waves from the ramparts of Essaouira Medina, sitting on a Dutch cannon made in The Hague in 1744.
It is the coastal wind – the beautifully named alizee, or taros in Berber – that has allowed Essaouira (essa-weera, or es-sweera in Arabic) to retain its traditional culture and character. For most of the year, the wind blows so hard here that relaxing on the beach is impossible, meaning that the town is bypassed by the hordes of beach tourists who descend on other Atlantic Coast destinations in summer. Known as the ‘Wind City of Africa’, it attracts plenty of windsurfers between April and November, but the majority of visitors come here in spring and autumn to wander through the spice-scented lanes and palm-lined avenues of the fortified medina, browse the many art galleries and boutiques, relax in some of the country's best hotels and watch fishing nets being mended and traditional boats being constructed in the hugely atmospheric port.
Essaouira is protected by a natural bay partially shielded from wave action by the Iles Purpuraires. A broad sandy beach extends from the harbour south of Essaouira. The Canary Current is responsible for the generally southward movement of ocean circulation and has led to enhancement of the local fishery.

Essaouira is a port city and resort on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Its medina (old town) is protected by 18th-century seafront ramparts called the Skala de la Kasbah, which were designed by European engineers. Old brass cannons line the walls, and there are ocean views. Strong Alizée trade winds make the city’s crescent beach popular for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Morocco, a North African country bordering the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, is distinguished by its Berber, Arabian and European cultural influences. Marrakesh’s medina, a mazelike medieval quarter, offers entertainment in its Djemaa el-Fna square and souks (marketplaces) selling ceramics, jewelry and metal lanterns. The capital Rabat’s Kasbah of the Udayas is a 12th-century royal fort overlooking the water.

The liquid gold of Essaouira (Morocco vlog)
The Liquid GOLD of Essaouira.
Our first vlog in Morocco takes us to Essaouira, the hidden gem at the atlantic coast. Forget Fes or Marrakech- Essaouira has a lot of surprises for the tourist. The old town Medina (UNESCO world heritage site), the hassle-free shops, the food, the bars, the vibe, the music, the arts, the windy sea (a Mecca for surfers and kitesurfers) and much more.
We got lost for a day in the labyrinth of narrow streets and passages, being forever charmed by the blue sky, the white houses, the golden ramparts, the remote beaches and the coulourful and friendly people.
After losing our GoPro hero 6 to the waves of the Atlantic ocean (gone forever :( ) in the morning we were amazed how many cats can be on the empty morning streets. Slowly the tow awakes to life, with its explosion of sound, taste and colours.
Walking around the streets we had a lot of fun negotiating prices for souvenirs, tasting the amazing olives and meeting crezy people like the ones dancing on the street, like the other guy trying to sell us „homemade cookies with drugs or like the third one who asked Alecsandra to sell him her eyes (!) for 1 million dollars. US! :))
There's nothing more than a walk in the dawn on the beach and ending up the evening in one of Essaouiras original bars or restaurants.
Next morning we went after THE LIQUID GOLD- the amazing and so trendy Argan Oil. Here there are a lot of women „co-operatives where the precious oil is produced from the Argan fruits. We visited such a co-operative and tried to work along with the women. And yeah, we found out also what the difference between the cosmetic oil and the one for cooking is!
