Northycote Farm, Wolverhampton - Sensory Garden
A new sensory garden has been created from an unused field and car park at Northycote Farm in Bushbury, Wolverhampton. The garden has been designed to be accessible for people with disabilities and the plants have been chosen for their scent, colour and texture and to encourage birds, bees and butterflies.
Funding for the work came from The Veolia Environmental Trust who awarded a grant of £11,090 through the Landfill Communities Fund.
ESSINGTON HOUSE FARM
Essington House Farm. now boarded up and abandoned, sits on the edge of Alrewas in Staffordshire. When I visited it was a grey and drizzly November day which seemed to suit the sadness that now surrounds this place. The garden is overgrown and the Victorian hothouse is filled with wild brambles letting only brown and grey light filter through.
There was a feeling of hidden movement around the grounds which fits well with the accounts of unusual paranormal disturbances connected with the farm.
Most recently these recount how, in the early 1970's when several bungalows were being built nearby and materials were stored in the yard, workmen were continually aware of movement within the house. At this time Essington Farm was unoccupied and the workmen reported the matter to the owner. The response (not calming to the workmen!) was that this was probably the 'people under the earth' who were being disturbed by the noise of the building work. Apparently the farm was at various times in its past haunted by 'goblin like creatures with pale skin and a squat appearance'. These disturbances seemed to be triggered by excessive movement or noise around the farm and the owner, a Mr James Thomas of Lichfield, could remember his grandparents having to move out of the farm in the late 1890's whilst the cellar was being extended as the creatures were seen every night appearing and disappearing through the walls of the cellar, frightening the children and servants.
I did some research in the weeks after my visit at Lichfield library and found a fascinating document from the 16th century listing the construction of various buildings around Alrewas. One of these was Essington Farm, then called Dark Farm, beside Dark Lane which is itself the original route of Ryknield Street, an old Roman road.
The document recorded that during construction 'extra coin had to be paid to the labourers' as the presence of 'divers (diverse) imps and goblins in the foundations' was making building work difficult.
The future of Essington House Farm is uncertain but if it is ever demolished I would be very interested to see what, if anything, is buried beneath.
