Heather Benning artist talk at the EAGM, September 2014
In this video, artist Heather Benning talks about her work in the exhibition 'Work hard, be nice' at the Estevan Art Gallery & Museum (September 11th - October 24th, 2014). The curatorial statement for this exhibition is as follows:
Heather Benning’s works retain a commitment to the place she was raised and lives. Her stories are often bound to a rural prairie sensibility, existing in prairie architecture and on plains, but also in more intangible cultural, social and historical roots. So, large or small, they act as monuments to contemporary or historical Saskatchewan concerns. Where she reimagines personal and communal narratives and experiences that occurred in this area, two that imprint prairie life – religion and childhood – persist.
In age and gesture, the strange congregation in Work hard, be nice calls to mind school days and religious practices. An institution – in part - of behavioural governance, schools work to establish normalcy, and like religion, provide a script for living. These spaces aim to maintain safety, orderliness and to prepare for living obediently. We all need to learn how to ‘get along’, but tension is suggested in the rule of conformity that fails to allow for individuality to thrive. In the highly-regulated period of childhood, some standards can become constraints.
These female bodies represent a time in a girl’s life where she is learning how to be a girl according to the social structures (for example, school, church and family) that teach her. Their poses are acquiescent and espouse piety and the maintenance of hierarchy. In this way, the figurines seem to consider the public life of girls.
Despite being outnumbered, the boys stand elevated on smooth neo-classical pedestals, suggesting (literally), that by virtue of their gender they have ‘one-upped’ their female counterparts. Their cocky pose stands in sharp contrast to the obedient girls, implying that for them, life is easier and more carefree. Their altitude, dominance despite minority and pose relay an unnerving sexual power.
The directive, Work hard, be nice was spotted by Benning on a sign outside a school. She identifies this as an advisory sentiment often aimed at young women as a two-step route to success. Niceness is certainly a valuable trait, but is it necessary, or even fair to expect? Is the implied reward a realistic consequence? Benning infers that this may be bad advice, in its suggestion of service for the good others and discouragement of critical thinking. The phrase hints at a restrictive road ahead, with the girls’ personhood defined by their gender, in the expectation of hard work and geniality. It implies consequences, social punishments perhaps, for nonconformity. Work hard, be nice considers gender politics and the mechanisms of power that relate to a real and imagined prairie girlhood. David Diviney artist talk at the EAGM, July 2014
In this video, David Diviney talks about his work in conjunction with the exhibition 'Hide' (May 23rd - August 23rd, 2014). The curatorial statement for this exhibition is as follows:
Museums and galleries have long provided public spaces in which to explore nature. It is a peculiar quality of our culture to wish to examine a hummingbird when stuffed, a moth pinned, or a storm when painted. In these historically-loaded spaces of display such visions of nature always reflect back on us: we collect, we interpret, we look. When we study the stuffed moose it is never singularly a deceased animal, but also a trophy, the embodiment of our desire to collect and learn. It tells us a story about our relationship with nature.
It seems appropriate not only that this relationship be of interest for contemporary artists, but that their makings are displayed in the place reserved for looking. David Diviney (NS) and Jamie Wright’s (MB) constructions explore meetings of art, man and nature. Their work plays with our attempts to converse with nature; our desire to physically engage with the outdoors, and our longing for natural interaction. Hunting – one juncture at which nature, man, and culture intersect – is a point of interest for both.
David Diviney's current work ...looks to a decidedly pastoral vernacular of folklore—pioneer tales, foundational myths, etc.—and other backwoods constructs—outsider art forms, do-it-yourself aesthetics, and related activities. Jamie Wright characterises his constructions as ...rooted in [his] understanding of human nature and our relationship to the environment, including trophies assembled from scavenged upholstery pleather, and reintroducing vinyl birds into urban settings as a performative gesture. Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan (/səˈskætʃəwən/ or /səˈskætʃəˌwɑːn/) is a prairie province in Canada, which has a total area of 651,900 square kilometres (251,700 sq mi) and a land area of 592,534 square kilometres (228,800 sq mi), the remainder being water area (covered by lakes/ponds, reservoirs and rivers). Saskatchewan is bordered on the west by the Province of Alberta, on the north by the Northwest Territories, on the east by Manitoba, and on the south by the U.S. states of Montana and North Dakota. As of December 2013, the population of Saskatchewan was estimated at 1,114,170. Residents primarily live in the southern half of the province. Of the total population, 257,300 live in the province's largest city, Saskatoon, while 210,000 live in the provincial capital, Regina. Other major cities include Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Swift Current and North Battleford.
Saskatchewan was first explored by Europeans in 1690 and settled in 1774, having also been inhabited for thousands of years by various indigenous groups. It became a province in 1905, its name derived from the Saskatchewan River. The river was known as kisiskāciwani-sīpiy (swift flowing river) in the Cree language. In the early 20th century the province became known as a stronghold for Canadian democratic socialism. Tommy Douglas, who was premier from 1944 to 1961, became the first social-democratic politician to be elected in North America. The province's economy is based on agriculture, mining, and energy. Saskatchewan's current premier is Brad Wall and its lieutenant-governor is Vaughn Solomon Schofield.

Gabriel Feld - Visual Artist
As artist-in-residence at the Siena Art Institute, Gabriel Feld has been inspired by the cultural and material context of the city of Siena, and in response developed a series of experimental works-on-paper.
The Sienese Diary that these works compose does not represent a finished body of works, but, as suggested by Feld's choice of the term diary, an open and continuous reflection that passes through the visual medium.

SUMMARY
=======
Saskatchewan ( (listen)) is a prairie and boreal province in western Canada, the only province without a natural border. It has an area of 651,900 square kilometres (251,700 sq mi), nearly 10 percent of which (59,366 square kilometres (22,900 sq mi)) is fresh water, composed mostly of rivers, reservoirs, and the province's 100,000 lakes.
Saskatchewan is bordered on the west by Alberta, on the north by the Northwest Territories, on the east by Manitoba, to the northeast by Nunavut, and on the south by the U.S. states of Montana and North Dakota. As of Q2 2019, Saskatchewan's population was estimated at 1,169,131. Residents primarily live in the southern prairie half of the province, while the northern boreal half is mostly forested and sparsely populated. Of the total population, roughly half live in the province's largest city Saskatoon, or the provincial capital Regina. Other notable cities include Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Swift Current, North Battleford, Melfort, and the border city Lloydminster (partially within Alberta).Saskatchewan is a landlocked province with large distances to moderating bodies of waters. As a result, its climate is extremely continental, rendering severe winters throughout the province. Southern areas have very warm or hot summers. Midale and Yellow Grass near the U.S. border are tied for the highest ever recorded temperatures in Canada with 45 °C (113 °F) observed at both locations on July 5, 1937. In winter, temperatures below −45 °C (−49 °F) are possible even in the south during extreme cold snaps.
Saskatchewan has been inhabited for thousands of years by various indigenous groups, and first explored by Europeans in 1690 and settled in 1774. It became a province in 1905, carved out from the vast North-West Territories, which had until then included most of the Canadian Prairies. In the early 20th century the province became known as a stronghold for Canadian social democracy; North America's first social-democratic government was elected in 1944. The province's economy is based on agriculture, mining, and energy. Saskatchewan's current lieutenant governor is Thomas Molloy and the current premier is Scott Moe.
In 1992, the federal and provincial governments signed a historic land claim agreement with First Nations in Saskatchewan. The First Nations received compensation and were permitted to buy land on the open market for the bands; they have acquired about 3,079 square kilometres (761,000 acres; 1,189 sq mi), now reserve lands. Some First Nations have used their settlement to invest in urban areas, including Saskatoon.
Porto
Porto (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpoɾtu]) (occasionally also known as Oporto in English) is the second-largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon, and one of the major urban areas in Southern Europe and the capital of the second major great urban area in Portugal. The urban area of Porto, which extends beyond the administrative limits of the city, has a population of 1.3 million (2011) in an area of 389 km2 (150 sq mi), making it the second-largest urban area in Portugal. The Porto Metropolitan Area includes an estimated 2 million people. It is recognized as a Gamma- level global city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Study Group, being one of five cities on the Iberian Peninsula with global city status, (the others being Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon and Valencia).
Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to as the origin for the name Portugal, based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin. In Portuguese the name of the city is spelled with a definite article as o Porto (English: the port). Consequently, its English name evolved from a misinterpretation of the oral pronunciation and referred to as Oporto in modern literature and by many speakers.
