After the theater adventure in Tallinn, Estonia
Here you see what happened next. Kaidi shares the story of the play which talked about the man who was almost invisible in his town, but suddenly there was a huge monument made for him. The whole town was so excited to figure our why and how this happened. The whole play kept us on our toes.
In Estonia Estonians love to go to the theater and it is usually well prepared, tickets are mostly sold out already months ahead. So it was a miracle we found a play tonight and got tickets.
We had a blast.
Aloha from us,

Viiuldaja katusel/ Fiddler on the Roof -- Rahvusooper Estonia/Estonian National Opera
Estonian National Opera summer musical
Based on Sholem Aleichem’s stories by special permission by Arnold Perl
Libretto: Joseph Stein
Music: Jerry Bock
Lyrics: Sheldon Harnick
Produced on the New York stage by Harold Prince
Original New York stage production directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins
World premiere on September 22, 1964 at the Broadway Imperial Theatre
Premiere at the Estonian National Opera on June 3, 2016
Half a century ago, a musical was born that became one of the most popular musicals on Broadway, where it ran for more than 3000 nights, which is more than Loewe’s “My Fair Lady” or Leigh’s “Man of La Mancha”. “Fiddler on the Roof” was first staged at the Estonian National Opera in 1989 by Georg Malvius, earning the title “Theatrical event of the year”.
27 years later, Georg Malvius brings the fiddler back to the Estonian National Opera, retelling the story of the dairyman Tevye and the colourful life in the village of Anatevka. It is a touching story of human relations, traditions, joys and worries, love and tears. Tevye tries to maintain his Jewish cultural and religious traditions, but the changing society and his five strong-willed daughters make it harder every day. His daughters decide to listen to their hearts and choose suitors outside their community. On top of that, the Tsar’s edict evicts the Jews from their village…
The 9 Tony Awards winning musical is filled to the brim with classic melodies, such as “If I Were a Rich Man”, “Matchmaker, Matchmaker”, “Sunrise Sunset”, etc. These melodies were made popular by Jüri Krjukov, Peeter Oja, Helgi Sallo and Katrin Karisma – the first Tevyes and Golde’s of the 1989 production.

Maailmaesietendus 22. septembril 1964 Broadway Imperial Theatre’is
Esietendus Rahvusooperis Estonia 3. juunil 2016
Pool sajandit tagasi sündinud muusikalist sai üks menukamaid Broadwayl, kus seda mängiti enam kui kolm tuhat korda – rohkem kui Loewe’ „Minu veetlevat leedit“ või Leigh’ „Meest La Manchast“. Estoniasse jõudis „Viiuldaja katusel“ Georg Malviuse lavastuses esmakordselt 1989. aastal, mil sellest sai aasta teatrisündmus.
Üheksa Tony auhinda võitnud muusikal pakatab meeldejäävaist meloodiaist, mille on eestlaste südameisse laulnud Jüri Krjukov, Peeter Oja, Helgi Sallo ja Katrin Karisma: „Oleksin ma rikas“, „Kosjamoor“, „Tõuseb päike, loojub päike“ jpt.

Valga-Valka [Estonia-Latvia] 2019
Video on BORDER FAIR in Valka/Valga
The name of this city sounds like a spell Valga-Valka. In fact, this is one city that the Estonian-Latvian border has divided into two parts.
The main attractions are on the Estonian side:
- The Valga Church of St. John (built in the period 1787-1816 by the architect Christoph Haberland).
- The wooden building of the town hall (built in 1865).
- The Church of St. Katrina (built in 1477).
- The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit (built in 1907).
- The Monument of the Liberation War (a copy of the monument of 1925, recreated in 2013 by the sculptor Jaak Soans).
- Monument to Stefan Batory, as the person who granted Valga the rights of a city in 1584. Established in 2002.
And Valka has following sights: a local history museum, a theater,
the former dwelling house of Baron von Wrangel (1645), the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Katrina (first mentioned in 1477).
Author of song Valka-Valga is Andris Niklavics:

My family came to visit me for Christmas in Estonia! We walked in the snow and explored both Narva and Tallinn (: We also went to a Christmas ball at the Narva College but my footage from that evening is mysteriously missing :/ I am so happy I was able to spend the holidays with my family and it was neat to experience Estonia's traditional celebrations around this time of year!
Lapland is Finland’s northernmost region, a sparsely populated area bordering Sweden, Norway, Russia and the Baltic Sea.
I have embarked on a Fulbright-funded journey to ESTONIA! This was just a short trip to Finland for fun and so I could take the GRE. The views expressed on this youtube channel do not reflect the views of Fulbright.

Maailmaesietendus 24. detsembril 1871 Kairo Ooperiteatris

Estonia: Chinese talent VS Estonian nationalism
The sad story of Jie Yin - Chinese Tenor in Estonia. Recorded by Maxim Efimov. 3.06.2017. Tallinn, Estonia
Born in Beijing on October 10 in 1985, I am an operatic tenor in Estonia. I have received
both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the Estonian Academy of Music and
Theater (EAMT), and through my studies and performance I am helping to elevate
Estonia's operatic status.
I started training with my first singing teacher in 2003, just one year before getting
accepted by the EAMT. I had taken private lessons in Beijing and was a total musical
beginner upon entering the academy. I could not even speak English!
Throughout the last ten years, in addition to formal musical training, singing and
performing, I’ve been enthusiastically teaching myself vocal technique. I us e d to
spend an entire year for tuning my voice by singing only Mozart’s operatic pieces. As a
result, I have now sung almost all the major arias from his Operas! I value highly this
personal training for being an Opera actor, and I believe it to be a necessary supplement
to any formal training to become a true master.
My master classes include training by greatly respected professors and department heads
throughout Beijing, London, Copenhagen, Vilnius, Helsinki, Rome and Vienna, including
the legendary 20th century Verdi tenor Carlo Bergonzi, and Rudolf Piernay, whose
students such as Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel and others have won highly regarded
singing competitions all over the world, beloved Lithuanian tenor Virgilijus Noreika, the
ex-president of the RichardWagner Verband International professor EvaMärtson-Wilson, and I
had the honor to study under professor V.Noreika at EAMT in the academic year
2015/2016.
My varied musical competitions have included International Competition Cologne, as well
as winning audience prize at the qualified round of the 30th Hans Gabor Belvedere
Singing Competition. I also took part in a documentary film of the 2011 competition,
appeared in over hundreds of concerts and recitals in Estonia, sang at the Estonian
National Opera and the Estonia Concert Hall, and performed as the leading tenor
D.Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto (2013) and G.Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore (2015)
in the Estonian National Opera. (Understudied: Die Entführung aus dem Serail -
Belmonte and Gianni Schicchi - Rinuccio)
In 2014, I was invited by the stage director and assistant head of Royal Danish Opera
Academy, Copenhagen, to be tenor solo for performance of G. Verdi’s Requiem at Berlin
Philharmonic Hall. I was also welcomed by conductor and chief of Les Musiciens
d’Europe, founder of the Opera Studio Genève, to perform at De Kleine Stooringhe in
Belgium on April 26, 2014.
Opera being a very complex performing art form is not only about singing, but acting as
well. Therefore, I have been participating in acting lessons at the Drama School and
watching numerous related performances.
Making sure that I would be as healthy and fit as possible for the stage, I lost 33kg
since May, 2014, down from the heavy weight of 150kg to a now steady and comfortable
75kg. I continue fitness training and toning my body to be at its most optimal.
It is ironic that I come from a non-musical family, and yet I am the youngest doctoral
student ever accepted by the EAMT, and the first Chinese doctoral student accepted right
after receiving my Master’s degree study.
