WRITING AGAINST THE SHAME OF THE (SOCIALIST) PAST
Poetic techniques of mental survival in Georgi Gospodinov’s, Viivi Luik’s and Christa Wolf’s novels
Public lecture by Aija Sakova, PhD
Aija Sakova, PhD (born 1980) has studied German and Estonian literature at the University of Tartu in Estonia, at the University of Konstanz and Berlin Humboldt University in Germnay and at the University of Vienna in Austria.
Her research interests cover Estonian and German contemporary literature, the question of remembering and addressing soviet / socialist past and moral aspects of remembering.
Sakova works as a senior researcher at Estonian Cultural Archives at Estonian Literary Museum. She has received several scholarships from German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and from the Alfred Toepfer Stiftung F.V.S.
The lecture aims to explore, what connects (and separates) these three different authors of different generations and nationalities and their novels published in 2010 and 2011: Georgi Gospodinov’s “The Physics of Sorrow” (Физика на тъгата, 2011), Viivi Luik’s “Shadow Theatre” (Varjuteater, 2010) and Christa Wolf’s “City of Angels” (Stadt der Engel oder The Overcoat of Dr. Freud, 2010). It is not merely the fact being published very closely in time in Sofia, Tallinn and Berlin but rather the spirit of those novels. It is a search for a balance between dealing with the past that hasn’t even past yet and looking into future. It is the awareness that there is no escape of writing about and facing the socialist past, more precisely that there is no escape from the shame of the past.

Alguses oli Sõna / In the Beginning Was the Word
Mikkeli muuseumis / Mikkel Museum
02.11.2013--02.03.2014

The exhibition In the Beginning Was the Word. Historical Bibles from Jaan Parusk's Collection marks the 275th anniversary of the publication of the first Estonian-language Bible. Besides Estonian-language ecclesiastical writings, Parusk's collection also includes a re-published edition of the Luther Bible in German and rare examples of Orthodox ecclesiastical and liturgical literature. A selection of early Western European Bible-themed graphic art from the collections of the Art Museum of Estonia and the University of Tartu Library is also included in the exhibition, which illustrates the process of translating words into visual art.

Igavuse esteetika

Peeter Talvistu talks about his curatorial project Aesthetics of Boredom at the Tartu Art House 13.04.–13.05.2018.
The foundation of contemporary culture is the constant struggle for the attention of the consumer; everyday decisions are assigned an aura of exceptionality. This has made us forget that creativity and fresh knowledge are often rooted in boredom, the lack of the exceptional. Despite the organising nature of boredom, in words we mostly try to avoid it, to get rid of it. However, we all know how to be bored.
Sometimes we even seek boredom out: it invites meditation, time to spend with ourselves. Therefore, there are no boring works at the exhibition “Aesthetics of Boredom”. Additionally, the word “boredom” has never been clearly defined but it is always present as something enjoyable.
Participating artists are Sirja-Liisa Eelma, Flo Kasearu, Peeter Mudist, Krista Mölder, Ede Raadik, Imat Suumann, Jevgeni Zolotko and Jaan Toomik.
Co-author of the idea: Jaak Tomberg. Graphic design: Tuuli Aule.
