???????? Ethnic tribes of Sapa (Vietnam): travel documentary
#sapa #vietnam #documentary
The mountains of North Vietnam host an incredible variety of ethnic minorities. Armed with curiosity, I ventured on a 4-day trek in these valleys.
The history of the H'mong people is difficult to trace. It is believed they lived in Southern China for over 2,000 years. Beginning of 18th century, conflict with han Chinese settlers
caused H'mong migration south, in Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The Black H'mong represent the majority of the population in the valleys near Sa Pa. H'mong girls create sophisticated embroideries for their clothes and they can be seen sewing in the valleys.
The second largest group in Sa Pa are the Red Dao. They also arrived in North Vietnam from China about 300 years ago. Their culture is considered one of the most colourful and unique. Red Dao people maintain traditional spiritual practices that include shamanism and
ancestor veneration. Le Cap Sac is a maturity ritual for a Dao manto become a descendant of Bang Vuong - the forefather of the Dao. During my travel, I had the opportunity to watch this ritual

About Me:
My name is Kevin Cook. I'm originally from Dallas, TX, but I've been living and traveling in Asia since 2013.
After graduating from university in 2011 and working a few unfulfilling jobs, I saved enough money to move to Asia and work as a teacher for a few years. That opportunity allowed me to travel around and experience new foods and cultures, and ignited a passion for blogging and making videos.
Now I travel full-time and make videos with the goal that I can encourage YOU to pursue your own dream of overseas traveling and living.

sapa will have snow in winter.do you like it?
Youtube:
Vietnam travel with 350km far north-west from Hanoi, Sapa, the capital of Sapa District in Lao Cai Province, lies at the altitude of 1600m. With the temperature ranging from the lowest of -1oC to the highest of 29oC, Sapa’s climate is moderate and drizzly in summer while chill and foggy in winter.
Sapa (or Chapa- the “sandy place”) first appeared in Vietnam national map in the late 1880s when the French disembarked in highland Tonkin. The first permanent French civilian resident arrived in Sapa in 1909, and by 1920, there were a number of villas being built in this area by prosperous professionals. Going through many ups and downs, nowadays, Sapa is the prominent holiday destination, favored by both locals and foreign tourists.Vietnam travel sites

Sapa Vietnam
Sapa is situated in a beautiful valley of Vietnam's mountainous north close to the Chinese border. Sapa is surrounded by ethnic tribe villages. I take a trek with Mimi a Black Hmong lady to her village about 14 km from Sapa. I walked slowly taking in the spectacular views on the way. When we arrived at Mimi's home her children were home from school so I declined her invitation to go in as I didn't want to intrude on the family. Mimi showed me around her village instead and told me the story of her arranged marriage.. Then Mimi got me a motor bike taxi to take me back to Sapa. A fantastic day.
BAC HA MARKET - SAPA, Lao Cai | Biggest Ethnic Minority Groups' Market in Vietnam
Located about 76 km from the train station, Bac Ha is a remote district of Lao Cai province. Bac Ha market which takes place every Sunday is famous for the originality and authenticity that the traders still preserve. One can reach Bac Ha market by booking a van or tour from Sapa, which is about 3 hours away.
The main square where trading takes place is divided into smaller section, specializing in a particular product such as handicrafts, food, horse, poultry and blacksmith. Each has its own trait and worth joining. The town itself is rather dull for any country surfer but if you want a relaxing place to get away from the tourist crowd in Sapa, or simply fond of taking unique photos, Bac Ha can be your option.

Sapa is surrounded by mountains, including the highest mountain in all of Indochina - Fansipan, at 3,143m above sea level. A cable car , which is the longest in the world now runs to the summit of the mountain.
The area is also attractive due to its cool climate, beautiful flower displays, spectacular waterfalls, interesting markets, tasty barbecued food and colourfully dressed ethnic minority people from surrounding villages, such as the Hmong, Dao and the Giay groups.

Cat Cat Village Hiking Tour visiting Black Hmong Tribe nearby Sapa, Vietnam Travel Video
In our latest travel video we embark on a short hike from our base in Sapa to visit Cat Cat Village (Black Hmong Tribe) early in the morning. With so many different hiking options to choose from it was difficult narrowing it down to just one specific route. Sapa is the perfect launching pad for trekking in the region to nearby minority ethnic villages. Hikes cater for all skill levels, as some villages are just several kilometers away whereas others involve multiple day routes. We started our journey with nothing more than a rough idea of where we were going, as pointed out by the manager working at our hotel.

Once we got away from the town we really started to enjoy the hike. Along the way we were treated to spectacular views of mountain vistas, cascading rice terraces, and wooden homes.
Not long after we started our journey, we were greeted by three ladies who asked us a plethora of different questions before trying to sell us some homemade crafts. They were polite and kind at first; however, I knew things were about to change as we approached close to the village.
The pressure to purchase something started to mount as the ladies revved up their negotiating tactics. Although I had no intentions to buy anything, Audrey was still searching for a few small gifts to send back home.
Although we ended up buying something, it was a little off-putting how aggressive they were. Buying from one lady wasn't enough; they wanted us to shop from the entire trio. Audrey eventually ended up buying one more item from a lady who started playing free music for no longer than 10 seconds.
Feeling relieved that they finally went away, we continued on with our hike.
Once we reached the village we spend time exploring around some of the traditional homes and pathways that were lined by simple shops selling everything from trinkets to cowboy hats.
I ended up purchasing that cowboy hat :P As many of you may - or may not - know I'm a man of many hats; especially, those that are unique or what some might describe as being cheesy.
Exploring these frontier parts of Northern Vietnam had me feeling a bit like a cowboy, so I suppose it was a rather fitting acquisition to put on top of my head.
Feeling tired from the excursion we headed back up the steep serpentine roads that lead to our hotel in Sapa. Unfortunately, things would go downhill for me after this trek, as I started feeling sick to my stomach:

Jump to Sa Pa ➞ 0:56
Compilation of our week in Sapa. First we spend a day in Hanoi. Afterwards the train ride to Lao Cai in North VIetnam. And finally the bus to Sa Pa. Sa Pa is awesome place to visit, but these days it became very touristy. If you have the chance, choose one of the surrounding villages. Beautiful, untouched nature will amaze your for sure. We have spend two days in Ta Van and one day in Ta Phin (Lao Chai is also a good place to stay).
