Exploring Rwanda’s museums and historical sites
With a rich history that goes back centuries, exploring Rwanda’s cultural heritage is a must for both the discerning domestic and foreign tourist. And with over 300 historical sites, according to the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda (INMR), there are plenty of places to visit.
Out of these sites, only a few have been developed into museums
.
Before 2007, there was only one museum in Rwanda- The National Museum of Rwanda, located in Huye District, in the Southern Province. Since then, the number has increased eightfold.
The New Times explored these different museums and met with various stakeholders to understand how Government of Rwanda’s investment in the different museums and heritage sites in the country has increased not only tourism dollars but also understanding of Rwanda’s past.

Best Family Rwanda (BFR) is an organization that focuses on family preservation by providing wholistic care to the children and families in our programs.
BFR serves three communities within the capital city of Kigali. BFR began in the southwestern sector of Gikondo back in 2004. Then in 2013 continued into the northern sector of Kinyinya and worked primarily in villages established by the government for widowed survivors of the 1994 genocide. In 2014, BFR expanded into the southeastern sector of Nyarugunga, a village built by the government for widows and also for injured military veterans.
Most recently, Best Family Rwanda launched the ITARA program to help ten mothers in Kinyinya to learn the craft of sewing to create high end artisan products with the goal of developing a sustainable income for their families.

A CHANCE TO LEARN
Trip to the National Museum in Huye
In Partnership with the Institut of National Museum of Rwanda and African International Club, we hired two busses to take our children to the Ethnographic Museum in Huye, Rwanda’s biggest Museum. The day-trip started with an introduction at Root Foundation centre, where 58 children had gathered. Apart from games and warm-ups, we briefed our children on the trip and the right behaviour. The almost 3 hours bus drive couldn't slow down the interest of our children to discover their own heritage and witness their origin. With a great tour guide we spent two hours inside the museum. Exhausted, inspired and happy, we went to a restaurant in Huye and had Dinner with our children who then mostly slept on the way back home to Kigali. A trip our children hardly ever experience like this was full of entertainment (in the bus), information input and visual experience (inside the museum) and satisfaction (in the restaurant). We are grateful to have African International Club to sponsor this event and the Institute of National Museum of Rwanda to allow us free entrance and a guide tour to the museum. A partnership, we would love to continue in the upcoming years to give our children the chance to go back to their roots - an important step for your self-awareness.
