Sicily: Mount Etna, Taormina & Northeastern Sicily with Sarah Murdoch | Rick Steves Travel Talks
In this travel talk, Rick Steves' Europe co-author and tour guide Sarah Murdoch explains how Mount Etna — the still-active volcano simmering in Sicily's northeastern corner — gave rise to the island, and still dominates it today. We'll also drop in on the posh resort of Taormina, Catania — Sicily's gritty second city, with a good WWII museum — and the charming beach town of Cefalù.

Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy )
Taormina is a hilltop town on the east coast of Sicily. It sits near Mount Etna, an active volcano with trails leading to the summit. The town is known for the Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient Greco-Roman theater still used today. Near the theater, cliffs drop to the sea forming coves with sandy beaches. A narrow stretch of sand connects to Isola Bella, a tiny island and nature reserve.
Taormina is a small city and comune in the Metropolitan City of Messina on the east coast of the island of Sicily, Italy, midway between Messina and Catania. Taormina has been a tourist destination since the 19th century. Its beaches, the most famous being 'Isola Bella' are accessible via an aerial tramway built in 1992 on the Ionian sea and via highways from Messina in the north and Catania in the south.
Just south of Taormina is the Isola Bella, a nature reserve; and further south, situated beside a bay, is the popular seaside resort of Giardini Naxos. Tours of the Capo Sant' Andrea grottos are also available. The village of Taormina is perched on a cliff overlooking the Ionian sea. Besides the ancient Greek theatre, it has many old churches, lively bars, fine restaurants, and antique shops. Taormina is approximately a forty-five-minute drive away from Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Etna.

Mount Etna Tour, Sicily, Italy
Mount Etna Tour. Etna national park. Sicily, Italy (2006).
• Fire Mountain Mount Etna, centerpiece of the national park, is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. The mountain has been in a state of near continuous eruption for half a million years. Exploring the Etna area reveals a history written in lava, from recent flows still raw to remnant rock of ancient eruptions, long since covered by forests of pine, beech, and birch.
• Top Volcano Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe at approximately 10,925 feet (3,330 meters), though its height often changes when volcanic material accumulates during eruptions and crater walls subsequently collapse.
• Fiery Origins “Etna” may be a composite name formed from the Latin and Greek words meaning “to burn.” Some linguists suggest, however, that it may have its origins in the Phoenician word athana meaning “furnace.”
• Storied Past Few volcanoes in the world have an eruption history so thoroughly documented by historical records—Etna’s date back as far as 1500 B.C. Some 200 eruptions have been documented down through the centuries, but so far most have been fairly light in terms of dealing death and destruction. Only about a hundred deaths have been attributed to the volcano. The mountain hasn’t been entirely harmless, however; in 1928 it destroyed the town of Mascali.
• Grow Zone Etna's lower slopes have been shaped by human hands to take advantage of rich soils for terraced vineyards and groves of apple, chestnut, and hazelnut trees.
• Lava-Carved Caves Over the centuries volcanic lava has carved out more than 200 caves. Local people have used them for everything from sacred burial places to cold cellar food storage.
• Wildlife Large mammals once roamed the volcano’s flanks but today foxes, martens, wild cats, rabbits, and mice are more common. Some of those small mammals help to sustain spectacular birds of prey, such as peregrines and golden eagles.
• Volcanic Caldera The horseshoe-shaped Bove Valley is an ancient volcanic caldera of cliffs, gullies, and lava formations covering some 14 square miles (37 square kilometers). The walls of this large basin tower some 3,280 feet (1000 meters) high.

The Trevi Fountain: 5 Things You Didn't Know
This is how you get up to the first level, which is what we’re doing right now. In a few minutes, I’ll be able to show you some of the beautiful scenery around us. We’re at base camp right now. There’s already a lot of snow on the ground, that’s why we’re bundled up warmly.
We’re at stage two on the lift up to the volcano at Etna. There’s snow all around us at the moment. We’re basically up with the clouds right now.
As you can on the right hand side, what’s going to happen is now in about 15 minutes, we’re going to take off in these jeeps, which I’ll show you right now. Kind of an off-road version of the jeep. That’s going to take us up even higher. Right now, I believe we’re at 2,500 meters. In the next step, I don’t even know how high this is going to be, but it’s going to be pretty high.
Guys, I am at 9,000 feet right now, on the top of the crater. Actually, you can hear the wind going by. It’s crazy on top here. It’s extremely cold. I can’t feel my hands. The sun is still burning down, and actually we’re right above the cloud. Right behind me is the massive crater. One of the few that we’re allowed to actually go up to after the bus-stop by foot. I can’t even feel my mouth. It’s so cold up here now. I want you guys to go to see this.
Now, I’m inside of the crater. It’s just a really cool feeling to say, “Yes, I’ve been inside of the biggest volcano in Europe.” I still can’t feel my mouth very much. The wind is bitter cold on top up here.
We survived the volcano crater. Now, we’re back in the jeep and we’re going back down. I’m going to film a little bit of the drive down in the jeep, to give you an idea of what it’s like coming up Mount Etna by the jeep. Some people actually do it by foot. Crazy.
Okay, I hope you enjoyed my adventure up Mount Etna. If you like it, please give us a thumb’s up. If you love it, please share it. For more information on how you can experience Etna, check out the description below. Also, tune in next time for some more adventures with me across Italy. Ciao for now.

Silvestri Craters at Mt Etna, Catania, Sicily, Italy
Mount Etna is Europe's highest and most active volcano. Towering above the city of Catania on the island of Sicily, it has been growing for about 500,000 years and is in the midst of a series of eruptions that began in 2001. It has experienced a variety of eruption styles, including violent explosions and voluminous lava flows. More than 25% of Sicily's population lives on Etna's slopes, and it is the main source of income for the island, both from agriculture (due to its rich volcanic soil) and tourism.

Travel Video Taormina and Mount Etna
SICILY: Whilst visiting some of the neolithic temples on Malta the guide stated that the people who settled there 5,000 years ago came from Sicily. Bingo, great excuse to go there then. Booked the flights and accommodation near Agrigento and in the heart of Taormina.
Taormina was actually the primary reason for going to Sicily. I've never been there before in reality, but back in 1997 and again in 2004 I went there for a long period of time in my mind and imagination: I used the cliff-based town as a location for major scenes that take place in two novels, Dante's Fool and Iron Man Project. So I was super excited about the chance to finally go there in the flesh and walk in the footsteps of some of my favourite characters: Natalya Dorganskya, Vincent Brent and the ubiquitous Jean-Luc Korda.

Mt Etna Sicily, Italy - In the Clouds

This was filmed while we were on a 14 day cruise through the Mediterranean sea. We took the celebrity silhouette on many different adventures to foreign lands including Egypt, Greece, Turkey and Italy. Check out my video of the Cruise here:
We took a 45 minute cab ride from the Port city of Messina, Sicily. First we walk around the Slivestri craters. The fog from the clouds was so dense the visibility was no more than a hundred yards at times. Then all the sudden the clouds would clear out, and you could see for miles. The surface of this mountain is all different colors at different places. some reds, oranges, yellows, and of course lots of black dried lava. I brought back some interesting rocks we found here. We stop in the Bar ristorante for a Drink then we hoof it up to another crater on the mountain only to find, as the clouds clear, we have a long way to go to get to the top. There does appear to be a Ski Lift to Take people up to the very top of the mountain. The mountain has been very active over the past few weeks erupting at the end of February and in March.

Hikers watch eruption from Italy's Mount Etna
Hikers watch eruption from Italy's Mount Etna
Hikers have been filmed looking at lava coming from a crater in Mount Etna on Thursday (January 24).
Strong video captured by experienced volcano watcher Giuseppe Distefano shows an eruption and lava pouring from a crater.
Distefano told Newsflare: The intracraterial Strombolian activity of the Voragine Crater (Centrale Crater) continues, accompanied by the emission of lava that is pouring into the adjacent Bocca Nuova crater. The eastern well of this crater (BN-2, also known as the Mouth of 1964) has been largely filled with lava.
There are ash emissions from the Northeast Crater and the Southeast Crater. The climb to the volcano is very difficult due to the presence of ice along the walls. The type of summit eruption is not frequent for Etna and the dynamics of the facts is quite unique.
