Sicily: Mount Etna, Taormina & Northeastern Sicily with Sarah Murdoch | Rick Steves Travel Talks
In this travel talk, Rick Steves' Europe co-author and tour guide Sarah Murdoch explains how Mount Etna — the still-active volcano simmering in Sicily's northeastern corner — gave rise to the island, and still dominates it today. We'll also drop in on the posh resort of Taormina, Catania — Sicily's gritty second city, with a good WWII museum — and the charming beach town of Cefalù.

Our day trip to the top of Volcano Etna Sicily Italy
Info from Wikipedia:
Mount Etna (Italian: Etna, Sicilian: Mungibeddu or a Muntagna, Latin:Aetna) is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, in theProvince of Catania, between Messina and Catania. It lies above the convergent plate margin between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate. It is the tallest active volcano on the European continent, currently 3,329 m (10,922 ft) high, though this varies with summit eruptions.Etna covers an area of 1,190 km2 (459 sq mi) with a basal circumference of 140 km. In Greek Mythology, the deadly monster Typhonwas trapped under this mountain by Zeus, the god of the sky and thunder and king of gods, and the forges of Hephaestus were said to also be located underneath it.
Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity. Due to its history of recent activity and nearby population, Mount Etna has been designated a Decade Volcano by the United Nations.[4] In June 2013, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Eruptions of Etna follow a variety of patterns. Most occur at the summit, where there are currently (as of 2008)five distinct craters—the Northeast Crater, the Voragine, the Bocca Nuova, and the Southeast Crater Complex (2). Other eruptions occur on the flanks, which have more than 300 vents ranging in size from small holes in the ground to large craters hundreds of metres across. Summit eruptions can be highly explosive and spectacular, but rarely threaten the inhabited areas around the volcano. In contrast, flank eruptions can occur down to a few hundred metres altitude, close to or even well within the inhabited areas. Numerous villages and small towns lie around or on cones of past flank eruptions.

The Trevi Fountain: 5 Things You Didn't Know
This is how you get up to the first level, which is what we’re doing right now. In a few minutes, I’ll be able to show you some of the beautiful scenery around us. We’re at base camp right now. There’s already a lot of snow on the ground, that’s why we’re bundled up warmly.
We’re at stage two on the lift up to the volcano at Etna. There’s snow all around us at the moment. We’re basically up with the clouds right now.
As you can on the right hand side, what’s going to happen is now in about 15 minutes, we’re going to take off in these jeeps, which I’ll show you right now. Kind of an off-road version of the jeep. That’s going to take us up even higher. Right now, I believe we’re at 2,500 meters. In the next step, I don’t even know how high this is going to be, but it’s going to be pretty high.
Guys, I am at 9,000 feet right now, on the top of the crater. Actually, you can hear the wind going by. It’s crazy on top here. It’s extremely cold. I can’t feel my hands. The sun is still burning down, and actually we’re right above the cloud. Right behind me is the massive crater. One of the few that we’re allowed to actually go up to after the bus-stop by foot. I can’t even feel my mouth. It’s so cold up here now. I want you guys to go to see this.
Now, I’m inside of the crater. It’s just a really cool feeling to say, “Yes, I’ve been inside of the biggest volcano in Europe.” I still can’t feel my mouth very much. The wind is bitter cold on top up here.
We survived the volcano crater. Now, we’re back in the jeep and we’re going back down. I’m going to film a little bit of the drive down in the jeep, to give you an idea of what it’s like coming up Mount Etna by the jeep. Some people actually do it by foot. Crazy.
Okay, I hope you enjoyed my adventure up Mount Etna. If you like it, please give us a thumb’s up. If you love it, please share it. For more information on how you can experience Etna, check out the description below. Also, tune in next time for some more adventures with me across Italy. Ciao for now.

Catania - Italy is Sicily’s second largest city, with a population of around 300,000. It lies on the Ionian Sea, under the shadow of Mount Etna, or “A Muntagna” as the locals refer to it.
Mount Etna is ever-present and has to a large extent shaped both the history and the actual existence of Catania. On several occasions volcanic eruptions destroyed the city, the most devastating of which happened in the 17th Century. In 1669 Catania was covered in lava and then, just 24 years later in 1693 an earthquake shook the town down to its foundations.
Visiting Catania - Italy is quite easy, as the old town centre is relatively small. An ideal starting point would be the main square, Piazza Duomo.
This delightful square and all its surroudning buildings was designed by one man, Giovanni Battista Vaccarini from Palermo

Mount Etna Tour, Sicily, Italy
Mount Etna Tour. Etna national park. Sicily, Italy (2006).
• Fire Mountain Mount Etna, centerpiece of the national park, is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. The mountain has been in a state of near continuous eruption for half a million years. Exploring the Etna area reveals a history written in lava, from recent flows still raw to remnant rock of ancient eruptions, long since covered by forests of pine, beech, and birch.
• Top Volcano Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe at approximately 10,925 feet (3,330 meters), though its height often changes when volcanic material accumulates during eruptions and crater walls subsequently collapse.
• Fiery Origins “Etna” may be a composite name formed from the Latin and Greek words meaning “to burn.” Some linguists suggest, however, that it may have its origins in the Phoenician word athana meaning “furnace.”
• Storied Past Few volcanoes in the world have an eruption history so thoroughly documented by historical records—Etna’s date back as far as 1500 B.C. Some 200 eruptions have been documented down through the centuries, but so far most have been fairly light in terms of dealing death and destruction. Only about a hundred deaths have been attributed to the volcano. The mountain hasn’t been entirely harmless, however; in 1928 it destroyed the town of Mascali.
• Grow Zone Etna's lower slopes have been shaped by human hands to take advantage of rich soils for terraced vineyards and groves of apple, chestnut, and hazelnut trees.
• Lava-Carved Caves Over the centuries volcanic lava has carved out more than 200 caves. Local people have used them for everything from sacred burial places to cold cellar food storage.
• Wildlife Large mammals once roamed the volcano’s flanks but today foxes, martens, wild cats, rabbits, and mice are more common. Some of those small mammals help to sustain spectacular birds of prey, such as peregrines and golden eagles.
• Volcanic Caldera The horseshoe-shaped Bove Valley is an ancient volcanic caldera of cliffs, gullies, and lava formations covering some 14 square miles (37 square kilometers). The walls of this large basin tower some 3,280 feet (1000 meters) high.

Mount Etna, or Etna, is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, in the Metropolitan City of Catania, between the cities of Messina and Catania. It lies above the convergent plate margin between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate. It is the highest active volcano in Europe outside the Caucasus. It is currently 3,326 m (10,912 ft) high, though this varies with summit eruptions. It is the highest peak in Italy south of the Alps. Etna covers an area of 1,190 km2 (459 sq mi) with a basal circumference of 140 km (87 miles). This makes it by far the largest of the three active volcanoes in Italy, being about two and a half times the height of the next largest, Mount Vesuvius. Only Mount Teide on Tenerife in the Canary Islands surpasses it in the whole of the European–North-African region west of the Black Sea. In Greek Mythology, the deadly monster Typhon was trapped under this mountain by Zeus, the god of the sky and thunder and king of gods, and the forges of Hephaestus were said to also be located underneath it.
Mount Etna is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and is in an almost constant state of activity. The fertile volcanic soils support extensive agriculture, with vineyards and orchards spread across the lower slopes of the mountain and the broad Plain of Catania to the south. Due to its history of recent activity and nearby population, Mount Etna has been designated a Decade Volcano by the United Nations. In June 2013, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
