Sicily by car part 4: Nicolosi, Etna, Taormina
Video from our holidaytrip by car through Sicily in may/june 2013. See the playlist of all parts: From day 10-12 we travelled from Piazza Armerina to Nicolosi, for visiting Mount Etna the most nearby town on the South side of the Etna. We stayed at the Etna Hut, a comfortable hotel with a view in Nicolosi. The owner provided us with the right information for visiting Mount Etna. We went by car to the cable-station, that brought us half way. From there on we took a truck to reach the top, where a guide was waiting. Beautiful scenery, used as background for movies like Star Wars. On the top it was windy and cold. The snow smelled like sulphuric acid. From mount Etna we went to nearby villages en further on to Taormina on our way down south to Avola. Filmed with Panasonic SD900

Monte Etna (Italy) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Monte Etna in Italy.
Mongibello, or 'Beautiful Mountain', that is what the Sicilians lovingly call Mount Etna, the largest and most active volcano in Europe. As it has developed it has gradually taken over more and more land. Today the Etna Massif measures more than one thousand seven hundred and fifty square kilometres. Due to the extremely fertile volcanic earth this area contains an abundance of plant life and each of its numerous vegetation zones has its own unique charm. Huge quantities of carbon dioxide are emitted from the snow-covered summit although the white smoke from its craters is usually quite harmless. Even during its most destructive and dangerous moments the fire spitting Mount Etna, or Mongibello as it is often referred to by the local population, indeed lives up to its reputation of being a truly 'Beautiful Mountain'.

ITALY TOUR Rome Mount Etna Mt. Etna
Mount Etna (Αἴτνη (Aítnē) in Classical Greek,[2] Aetna in Latin, also known as Muncibeḍḍu in Sicilian and Mongibello in Italian, a combination of Latin mons and Arabic gibel, both meaning mountain[3]) is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, close to Messina and Catania. Its Arabic name was Jebel Utlamat (the Mountain of Fire). It is the second largest active volcano in Europe, currently standing 3,329 metres (10,922 ft) high, though this varies with summit eruptions; the mountain is 21 m (69 ft) lower now than it was in 1981. It is the highest mountain in Italy south of the Alps. Etna covers an area of 1,190 km² (460 sq mi) with a basal circumference of 140 km. This makes it by far the largest of the three active volcanoes in Italy, being about two and a half times the height of the next largest, Mount Vesuvius. Only Mount Teide in Tenerife surpasses it in the whole of the European region (though geographically Tenerife is an island of Africa). [4]
Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of eruption. The fertile volcanic soils support extensive agriculture, with vineyards and orchards spread across the lower slopes of the mountain and the broad Plain of Catania to the south. Due to its history of recent activity and nearby population, Mount Etna has been designated a Decade Volcano by the United Nations.[5]
The excursions to the summit zone of Mt. Etna consist of one of the most interesting destinations for tourists who visit Sicily. The excursion service to the craters enters into activity at the end of the winter season, and extends through the period between March and November.
Using the modern installations of the cable-cars on the slopes of Southern Mt. Etna, in only 15 minutes it is possible to reach the height of 2,504 meters. Following the ascent to 581 m., the second part of the excursions begins. The service is carried out with special off-road vehicles driven by expert conductors who calmly drive up even the most difficult paths, reaching in only 20 minutes, the height of 2,900 m. above sea level.
Here, one finds themselves in front of an incomparable panorama suspended over the sea, from where it is possible to admire the majestic central crater and the historic lava flows which characterize the landscape of Mt. Etna.
Here, the tourist guides of Mt. Etna are available to assist and take you to the places where the volcanic activity flourishes, completely respecting the express normatives issued by the authorities which protect the zone.
Such activity has been recently increased through the acquisition of new vehicles, and with the organization of excursions even until the late hours of the afternoon. This enables us to affront the ever-growing interest of the above mentioned services, principally during the months of July, August and September.
In fact, many Italian and foreign tourist agencies and tour operators increasingly promote similar itineraries annually, therefore obtaining an elevated number of fascinated adventurers, in particular, from Great Britain, France, Germany the U.S.A. and Russia.

We were doing the South Tour to the Etna in Sicily, Italy in August 2018.
First we got to the Rifugio Sapienza (1900 metres) on car, from there we took the cable car to approx. 2400m where we changed to the bus and drove up to 2900m where we continued on foot up to the Peak Bocca Nuova Crater (New Mouth Crater) at 3223m.
At the Peak it started hailing. The tour took about 5 hours altogether.
Enjoy the Video!

Etna - Piazzale Sapienza

Skiing on Volcano - Etna, Sicily (February 2019)
Ski resort Etna Nord is one of two resorts on Etna volcano and one of three in Sicily.
Etna Nord offers incredible opportunity to ski with the views of a smoking volcano, with pleasant, nicely profiled, wide slopes.
The conditions may vary though, as there is always risk that the eruption will cover the snow with volcanic ash and the resort must be closed.
The best time to ski on Etna is February, with plenty of natural snow.
The weather may vary from +10C and sun to -10C and a freezing wind. Therefore snow chains are required to reach the resort by car from mid November to mid April.
