ITALY Mount Etna & Cefalu (Sicily)
You must be very lucky to visit a cloudless Mount Etna (we were not...). But the lower slopes of the mountain have much to offer. You can walk through craters and watch old lava flows.
In springtime there are many flowers.
From Etna we drove to Cefalu through wild mountain scenery. Cefalu is a nice seaside place and it has a beautiful cathedral.

How to Hike the Valley of the Oxen, Sicily, Italy. Episode 148
We hiked the Valley of the Oxen (east of Etna Volcano) to reach the Arco di tufo. This was a difficult CAI (Catania Alpine Club) day excursion. Our objective was the Arco di Tufo, a keyhole in a strange rock formation high up the lava slopes of Etna volcano.

How to Hike the Valley of the Oxen, Sicily, Italy
In this video I outline how to hike the Valley of the Oxen to the east of Etna Volcano. This was a Catainia Alpine Club excursion. This is a difficult day hike on a shoestring.
The trailhead is a car park a short walk east of the Etna South tourist village. It starts up a groomed trail.
Our CAI guide stopped often to point out lots of interesting facts about the volcano and the city of Catania, in the distance, that was once inundated with lava from these small extinct volcanic mounds.
Above the forest we enter a strange pastoral area to reach a ridge line and then started a long descent into the valley. Some took it slow while some took it fast.
The strange skinny rock walls are called dykes. They were formed when lava came to the surface through cracks. Over the years the soil eroded, leaving the magma exposed.
Once down in the valley we hugged the edge of the lava fields. Even in early July, there was still plenty of ice left from the winter.
We then started the long angled traverse of the eastern side of the volcano. The lava stone areas were very difficult to cross.
Our objective was in sight, a keyhole in a wall of lava rock.
After lunch we start the long descent down the lava sand slope. The lava sand was hard packed and has a frozen layer just below the surface. Some preferred the kamikaze descent method while others took their time.
Did I mention that lava sand is sharp? Falling caused shallow glass cuts on exposed flesh.
At the bottom we crossed the lava field and then started the long ascent back to the ridge.

Filmed from a small quadcopter. It was not tuned well. Anyway it worked in this thin air.
Catania, Toarmina, Marzememi, Siracuse Sicily Vlog 2017
CATANIA, SICILY
DATES TRAVELED: 15TH FEB 2017 - 18TH FEB 2017
WEATHER: VERY SUNNY- 17-18°C IN TEMPERATURE
Our tour started from Catania. We rented a car from the airport and drove to a few places. We didn't have a long stay here so wanted to make the most of it.
DAY 1..Arrived at our hotel Miro B&B. Spent the evening in the Catania area.
DAY 2.. Drove to Mount Etna 30-40 min by car from Catania. Got to try some specialties from around this area pistachio nuts and honey. The honey known as 'Gold Etna' is amazing and comes in a variety of flavours such as lemon, strawberry and hazelnut. We then got a cable cart this cost us 30 euros each and just went half way. After this we drove to Toarmina which was about 1-2 hrs. drive from Mount Etna. Places we visited here were Castle Mola and Theatre Greco.
DAY 3..On the third day we drove to a fishing village called Marzamemi which is the southern most point of Sicily. It was originally called Mars? al-hammam by the Arabs in the 10th century. After a short visit here we drove to Siracuse. In this town we visited Castle Maniace, Cathedral in Duomo di Siracuse and Tempo di Apollo. Whist here we got try the local delicacies Pasta Alla Norma which is the most iconic dish. You will find that most of the foods have an influence of Greek, Spanish, French and Arab origin.
DAY 4..Our last and final day in Catania. In the morning we headed straight to Orta Botanica, a garden growing a wide variety of cactuses'. The place itself was ok, we only went there for something to do. we then went to the main plaza Piazza Duomo which also has a shopping district next to it. So we managed to garb some last minutes souvenirs before making our way to the airport.
