Etretat tire sa réputation de son paysage grandiose. Bordée d’une promenade, la plage de galets est encadrée par les célèbres falaises de craie blanche, si souvent illustrées par les peintres, de Gustave Courbet à Claude Monet. A droite, la falaise d’Amont avec sa petite chapelle, à gauche, la falaise d’Aval avec son arche monumentale. L’Aiguille, haute de 71 mètres, se dresse un peu plus loin, isolée dans les flots. Le spectacle est féerique quelle que soit la saison. Mais son charme ne s’arrête pas là. Cet ancien village de pêcheurs, devenu une station balnéaire depuis la Belle Epoque, abrite, en son centre, de magnifiques maisons cossues comme la Villa Orphée, le manoir de la Salamandre, et la plus prisée, le Clos Lupin, demeure de l’écrivain Maurice Leblanc qui y conta les aventures de son personnage Arsène Lupin. A la fois site naturel d’exception et haut-lieu du tourisme, Etretat ne laisse personne indifférent.

Day 413 - We're heading to the Normandy coast to explore some amazing cliffs in the town of Étretat, France! These white cliffs have formed crazy archways which are absolutely stunning. The town also have a ton of WWII history, which we had a blast learning about!

Étretat is a commune in the Seine-Maritime department in Normandie region in north-western France. It is a tourist and farming town situated about 32 km (20 mi) northeast of Le Havre, at the junction of the D 940, D 11 and D 139 roads. It's located on the coast of the Pays de Caux area.

Étretat is best known for its cliffs, including three natural arches and the pointed needle. These cliffs and the associated resort beach attracted artists including Eugène Boudin, Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet, and were featured prominently in the 1909 Arsène Lupin/Lupin the Third novel The Hollow Needle by Maurice Leblanc.

Two of the three famous arches are seen from the town, the Porte d'Aval, and the Porte d'Amont. The Manneporte is the third and the biggest one, and cannot be seen from the town. The GR 21 long-distance hiking path (Le Havre to Le Tréport) passes through the town.

Étretat is known for being the last place in France from which the 1927 biplane The White Bird (L'Oiseau Blanc) was seen. French WWI war heroes Charles Nungesser and François Coli were attempting to make the first non-stop flight from Paris to New York City, but after the plane's 8 May 1927 departure, it disappeared somewhere over the Atlantic. It is considered one of the great unexplained mysteries of aviation. A monument to the flight was established in Étretat, but destroyed during World War II, during German occupation. A new and taller monument was constructed in 1963, along with a nearby museum.

The economy of Étretat rests mainly on tourism, which gives the locals a growing commercial outlet. The city places itself as the number one tourist attraction in former Upper Normandy, as the site most visited along with Bénédictine distillery and museum at Fécamp, the Rouen Cathedral and the Claude Monet Foundation in Giverny.

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the economy was supplemented by kelp-burning on the beaches. The white plumes of smoke by the shore can be clearly seen in George Inness' painting 'Étretat' (1875, Wadsworth Athenaeum). The discovery and development of iodine-rich mineral deposits in Chile about the same time the iodine-from-kelp industry reached full vigor, dealt the kelp industry another severe blow in the late 1870's. However, small quantities of kelp continued to be harvested for soda, potash and iodine in northern France.

The Cliffs of Etretat look like they belong on the Mediterranean or in the tropics.

This beautiful locale, which has attracted painters like Monet, is actually found in Northern France.

The cliffs, some soaring over 300 feet into the air, offer unmatched ocean views.

A particularly striking feature of the Etretat Cliffs is the sea arches at their base.

Also, the White Bird, a biplane attempting a Trans-Atlantic flight, was last seen here in 1927.

Histoire de la création
En 1905, Madame Thébault, devenue alors une comédienne célèbre, plante un premier arbre sur l’une des falaises d’Étretat. C’est le premier pas qui conduira plus d’un siècle plus tard, à la création des Jardins d’Étretat.
Le designer de parcs et de jardins Alexandre Grivko s’est laissé inspirer par l’histoire du jardin de Madame Thébault. En 2015, le concept du jardin est repensé. Au cours des travaux, les Jardins d’Étretat sont complétés par de nouveaux motifs, ce qui leur permet de s’agrandir. L’objectif était de réunir les éléments historiques et artistiques de l’ancien jardin et les idées architecturales contemporaines. C’est ainsi que la vision du jardin néo-futuriste est née. Les Jardins d’Étretat témoignent de la maîtrise technique exceptionnelle d’Alexandre Grivko, qui est parvenu à créer en deux ans un ensemble qui paraît avoir un demi siècle. L’un des procédés mis en œuvre pour réaliser cet exploit a été emprunté au grand maître classique de l’art des parcs et des jardins, connu du monde entier pour avoir réalisé le jardin royal de Versailles, André Le Nôtre. Pour créer le parc de Versailles en un temps record, Le Nôtre n’avait employé qu’une quantité limitée d’espèces végétales, il est cependant parvenu à obtenir des effets visuels exceptionnels grâce à des tailles minutieuses.

Les jardins comptent plus de 150 000 plantes. C’est un véritable laboratoire scientifique et artistique, qui vise principalement à rechercher de nouvelles technologies pour l’entretien des plantes et la création de nouvelles formes de taille paysagère. L’espace du jardin est formé de grandes compositions de végétaux taillés : elles font écho aux paysages et à la nature de la Normandie. Vous y verrez des plantes de formes différentes : « des vagues de la Manche », « des spirales et des tourbillons marins », « des fermes ostréicoles », « des falaises et des arcs de la Côte d’Albâtre », etc. Les Jardins d’Étretat, c’est l’occasion de souligner la biodiversité et a beauté naturelle de l’écosystème, aussi bien que de montrer de nouvelles formes sculpturales et de nouveaux procédés architecturaux dans l’art paysager. Les Jardins d’Étretat, c’est un musée d’art contemporain à ciel ouvert qui propose une collection d’œuvres d’art exceptionnelle. Le mariage impressionnant de plantes taillées et de sculptures contemporaines apporte à chaque partie du jardin une atmosphère et un caractère uniques.

Étretat is best known for its chalk cliffs, including three natural arches and a pointed formation called L'Aiguille or the Needle, which rises 70 meters above the sea. The Etretat Chalk Complex, as it is known, consists of a complex stratigraphy of Turonian and Coniacian chalks. Some of the cliffs are as high as 90 meters.

These cliffs and the associated resort beach attracted artists including Eugène Boudin, Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet. They were also featured in the 2014 film Lucy, directed by Luc Besson.

Discover a unique landspape of Étretat Normandie, France
The cliffs steal the show at Etretat, thanks to their exceptional natural drama and aided by the fact that famous Impressionists painted them so memorably. Erosion has created extraordinary arches in the chalk either side of the resort. There’s also an amazing needle-like structure, known in French as an Aiguille.

There is more to Etretat than the cliff formations and the thick pebble beach, though. The small resort behind is full of charm. Along with some extravagant hotels, the remarkable wooden covered market stands out. Le Clos Lupin, a typical old villa in town, conceals mysteries for visitors, while the churches around Etretat stand out more prominently.

Back with the cliffs, you can go for some stunning walks along the cliff tops, where further surprises await, including a breath-taking golf course. Return to the famous cliff formations on the beach at night and you can see them magically lit up.

It's a perfect location to spend a weekend.
