Planned Restoration Of The Temple Of Zeus In Turkey
Restoration of the Temple of Zeus located in Muğla province is in planning in compliance with the original. It is thought to have been left incomplete due to an economic crisis that occurred about 1,800 years ago
Located in the ancient city of Euromos in Muğla's Milas district, the Temple of Zeus (Lepsynos) will be restored by a group of specialists from Turkey, France and Italy. The temple is believed to be unfinished due to the economic crisis that hit the ancient city 1,800 years ago. President of Muğla Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board and Euromos Ancient City Excavations Assistant Professor Abuzer Kızıl, explained that 16 columns of the temple are still standing tall. He said the columns that face the city are decorated with fluting, but the columns on the southern side of the temple were not decorated, which indicates that the city was suffering from economic difficulties.
Kızıl said that they will start restoration works by locating the architectural blocks that are not standing today. First of all, we are documenting the blocks that are not here. Professor Ümit Serdaroğlu carried out cementation work in 1975 in order to restore the temple, but this structure will challenge us. Our main supporters are the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Directorate General of Cultural Assets and Museums.
Kızıl claimed that the temple could not be finished with the ancient city's budget and continued, Euromos's budget was not large enough to finish the temple. The wealthy people of the city erected several columns, but it was not enough. We want to erect some of the unfinished columns and finish the construction as we restore the whole temple. We will raise the temple up as much as we can.
Explaining that the standing columns feature plates with the names of the people who contributed to the construction inscribed, Kızıl stressed that the temple was dedicated to Zeus. He said that Lepsynos is one of the best preserved temples in Anatolia. We are currently evaluating the situation with a team of six people coming from Turkey, France and Italy, Kızıl added. He said that they will not spoil the magical atmosphere of the ancient city and highlighted that they will not piece together the unfinished columns with other materials.
Kızıl said that they have to be careful about disturbing the standing columns while they are restoring the temple because they might fall down even with the smallest vibration. The head of the excavation and restoration said that they might receive support from other Turkish and international institutions. If we successfully restore the temple, it will be a matter of Turkish pride, Kızıl said. The temple, which is located within the site of Euromos Ancient City is situated along the Milas-Söke highway. The temple dates back to the second century A.D., and is believed to have been built during the reign of Emperor Hadrianus.

Ancient Greeks abort temple construction in Turkey
Work has started on the restoration of the Zeus Lepsynos Temple in the ancient city of Euromos, located in the western province of Muğla’s Milas district, with the Culture and Tourism Ministry and the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums as main sponsors.
A team of six from Turkey, France and Italy have been examining the temple, which is thought to have been left unfinished by its original architects because of an economic crisis in the 2nd century AD.
The Director of Muğla Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board and the head of Euromos excavations, Assistant Professor Abuzer Kızıl said that 16 columns of the temple were still standing, noting that the ones overlooking the city had been decorated while nothing had been done for the ones on the south part. “This shows an economic crisis,” he said.
Kızıl said that works would start after the team determines the architectural blocks that collapsed because of an earthquake or other reasons.
“First of all, we are documenting the architectural blocks one by one. The cement work that was done for restoration in 1975 by Professor Ümit Serdaroğlu will cause difficulty for us,” he said.
Kızıl said that the temple could not have been finished with the ancient city’s budget, because, it “was not enough to finish the temple. The notables of the city and physicians lent a hand and built some columns. But it was not enough, either.” In terms of restoration, Kızıl said his team plans to replace the columns that have collapsed due to environmental factors or other reasons, with dreams of reviving the temple “as much as possible.”
Kızıl said the columns had panels where the names of the contributors were written and that the temple was dedicated to Zeus.
He said that Lepsynos was one of the best protected temples in Anatolia, adding, “Now we are trying to understand the current situation of the temple.”
Kızıl said they would not destroy the “magical atmosphere” of the ancient city and not reconstruct any half-finished columns with other materials.
He said that while working, they should properly study the statics of the strong columns, “because they may collapse at the slightest vibration. We can get support from national or international institutes for this project. If we can succeed it, it will be a worldwide success and in Turkey’s honor.”
The temple is located on a road side of the Milas-Söke highway. Dating back to the 2nd century, the temple is thought to have been built in the era of Emperor Hadrianus.

BAFA LAKE TOURS in Turkiye with Felicia Travel
At the innermost north-east tip of the lake is the village of Kapıkırı, as well as the ruins of Heraclea by Latmus (sometimes called Heraclea in Ionia), to distinguish from other ancient Greek sites named Heraclea. The mountain chain of Beşparmak (Dağları) -also named (Latmus) in antiquity- rises on the back, sheltering the non-restored ruins of a dozen monasteries dating from the Byzantine era on its slopes. Yet another monastery is situated on an islet on the lake just across the village. The village of Kapıkırı has recently developed important facitilies catering to visiting tourists, although agriculture and fishing still occupies an important part in its economy.
According to the legend, it was here that the goddess Selene fell in love with the shepherd Endymion and she asked Zeus to keep the young shepherd in perpetual sleep and bore up to fifty children from her nightly encounters with the sleeping young man.
