Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1984)
This documentary showcases the accomplishments of American journalist, women's suffrage advocate, author, and conservationist Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Graduating from Wellesley College in 1912, she moved to Miami in 1915 to work for her father Frank Bryant Stoneman at his newspaper that would later become The Miami Herald. She became the first woman to enlist in the Navy when she was given the assignment to write a story about the first woman to enlist in WWI. During her research, Douglas learned that no woman had actually enlisted yet, but she then felt compelled to enlist herself. While living in South Florida, Douglas developed a deep love for the environment, particularly the Florida Everglades. Her greatest notoriety resulted from the 1947 publication of The Everglades: River of Grass. Living until the age of 108, Douglas was known as the foremost expert on and advocate for Everglades conservation.
