Pantomime prince gets engaged on stage
Festive performance of Sleeping Beauty gains surprise extra scene as boyfriend climbs on stage to ask actress to marry him
Actress Kelli Maybank was taken by surprise when her boyfriend proposed to her on stage in front of a packed theatre audience during a performance of Sleeping Beauty on Saturday night.
Dressed in gold boots and velvet gown, Miss Maybank was playing Prince Percival at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, Gloucester, when her 33-year-old boyfriend Mark Grunsell stepped from the wings.
Visibly nervous, Mr Grunsell handed his girlfriend a bouquet of flowers before going down on one knee and proposing.
Friends and family – along with the rest of the audience – stood up and cheered when she said yes.
Miss Maybank, a 29-year-old actress, who lives in Bournemouth, Dorset, with her groom-to-be, said she was “totally stunned” by the unexpected finale to the pantomime.
She said: “I didn’t plan to get engaged while dressed as a prince in gold boots but it was brilliant.
Despite describing himself as not that romantic, Mr Grunsell, a logistics manager, said he wanted to do something special.
She’s an actress and loves a bit of drama, so I thought this was perfect, he said.
The couple who have been together for nine years plan to marry in 2016.
