Stolen Children: The Legacy of the Carlisle Indian School and Canadian Residential Schools
November 7, 2018
Program Introduced by KHC Fellow, Julio Meza
Speaker: Hayes P. Mauro, Associate Professor, Queensborough Community College, Art & Design Department
Short Films: Kent Monkman’s Brothers and Sisters, Released 2015, 3 mins and Stolen Children, Residential School Survivors Speak Out, Released 2015, 18 mins
Two short films based on original archival footage and the accounts of survivors of the Canadian residential schools will be screened. A talk will follow by Professor Mauro based on his book, The Art of Americanization at the Carlisle Indian School. He will speak about the social reformers, usually Christian evangelicals, who wished to Americanize Native Americans and African Americans, along with newer immigrants from southern and eastern Europe. This meant transforming them into culturally acceptable entities who looked, acted, dressed, and thought like an idealized middle class Anglo-American. Needless to say, this had ramifications for both race and gender definitions.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
McGill University (French: Université McGill) is a public research university in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It was established in 1821 by royal charter, granted by King George IV. The university bears the name of James McGill, a Montreal merchant originally from Scotland whose bequest in 1813 formed the university's precursor, McGill College.
McGill's main campus is located at Mount Royal in downtown Montreal, with the second campus situated in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, also on the Montreal Island, 30 kilometres (18 miles) west of the main campus. The university is one of two universities outside the United States who are members of the Association of American Universities and it is the only Canadian member of the Global University Leaders Forum (GULF) within the World Economic Forum.McGill offers degrees and diplomas in over 300 fields of study, with the highest average admission requirements of any Canadian university. Most students are enrolled in the five largest faculties, namely Arts, Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Management.McGill counts among its alumni 12 Nobel laureates and 145 Rhodes Scholars, both the most of any university in Canada, as well as five astronauts, the incumbent prime minister and two former prime ministers of Canada, the incumbent Governor General of Canada, 14 justices of the Canadian Supreme Court, at least seven foreign leaders, 28 foreign ambassadors, over eight dozen members of the Canadian Parliament, United States Congress, British Parliament, and other national legislatures, several billionaires, nine Academy Award (Oscars) winners, 11 Grammy Award winners, four Pulitzer Prize winners, two Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, at least 16 Emmy Award winners, and 28 Olympic medalists, all of varying nationalities. McGill alumni were instrumental in inventing or initially organizing football, basketball, and ice hockey. McGill University or its alumni also founded several major universities and colleges, including the Universities of British Columbia, Victoria, and Alberta, the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Dawson College.

Introduction to Scottish Rite Freemasonry
Short video introducing Scottish Rite Freemasonry
C2C Care: Copyright for Museums
Nervous about how copyright applies to your collection? Unsure if you can claim copyright to the photographic reproductions created of your collection objects? You’re not alone! Understanding copyright law can be a challenge for lawyers, let alone for the non-lawyers working with the collections of cultural institutions on a daily basis. Managing copyright nevertheless remains a key responsibility of caring for collections. And it remains imminently important for collection professionals to understand that copyright is just one element of intellectual property rights that may need to be considered when creating or utilizing reproductions. This webinar provides a practical introduction to U.S. copyright law, the public domain, and fair use, as well as touching upon parallel intellectual property rights to consider, such as privacy and publicity rights. Additionally, attendees will be presented with methodologies to navigate the myriad licensing options and ever-changing uses affecting collections, including determining rights status, identifying rights holders, and applying rights statements, Open Access, and Creative Commons licenses to collection objects.
Presenter
Anne M. Young heads the rights and reproductions department at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. Young was formerly the photographic archivist for the Kinsey Institute, Indiana University and has worked for the Art Gallery of Ontario and George Eastman Museum. She is currently a Master of Jurisprudence candidate at Indiana University’s Robert H. McKinney School of Law focusing on Intellectual Property, art, and museum law. Young previously received a Master of Arts in photographic preservation and collections management from Ryerson University and a Bachelor of Arts in art history and studio art (photography) from Indiana University. She chaired the Rights and Reproductions Professional Practices Committee of the American Alliance of Museums from 2012–2018 and was appointed to serve on the 2018–2021 term of the College Art Association’s Committee on Intellectual Property. Young received the Visual Resources Association’s Nancy DeLaurier Award in 2017 for her editorial work on the book Rights & Reproductions: The Handbook for Cultural Institutions, the second edition of which was published in 2019.

She has written and spoken widely about Freemasonry and fraternalism. Dr. Newell has published a number of books including Curiosities of the Craft: Treasures from the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts Collection (2013). Dr. Newell’s most recent book is entitled The Badge of a Freemason: Masonic Aprons from the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library (2015)
Lecture summary: Called the “badge of a Freemason” in Masonic ritual, the fraternity’s apron was adapted from the protective aprons worn by working stonemasons during the 1600s and 1700s. Over the next 200 hundred years, Masonic aprons evolved in shape and style, with influence from men’s fashions and decorative preferences. This talk will highlight several examples of American aprons from the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library collection, exploring the stories of their makers and users. By looking at early aprons, we find patterns and trends in their use and design that not only differ from today, but teach us new things about Freemasonry of the past.

1. Beirut is in Lebanon, not Syria.
2. At the time of the Roman Empire, Great Britain would have been known as Britannia rather than England. The name England was first used during the Middle Ages, referring to the tribe of Germanic Angles that settled the island after the fall of the Roman Empire.
3. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the only Marian apparition in the Americas to have been approved by the Holy See. Other Marian apparitions in the Americas have been approved by local ordinaries, including Our Lady of Good Success in Ecuador (1572), Our Lady of Good Help in Wisconsin (1859), Our Lady of Cuapa in Nicaragua (1980), in Venezuela (1984) and Our Lady of the Rosary of San Nicolas in Argentina (1980s).
