Camels & Dunes // Morocco Overlanding II

Out of the ordinary, into the extremes In the second part, we come from the high atlas down into the desert. Moving from Imichil in the high Atlas towards the Algerian border was a remarkable day driving, starting in the mountains at high altitude going to wide open lands with Oasis’s and small city’s felt like visiting two worlds within one day. We where then moving from Boudenib along the Algerian border south to Merzouga, manly through dry rocky deserts through impressive rock formations spiced up with several sort off-road challenges. The track finally ended behind the impressive dune field of Erg Chebbi where we spend our first night in the sand and of course had a small sand storm… In Merzouga we met the guys from “lines_bus” and went with them towards Zagora. The track went over rocky terrain and several times through sand fields made out of the finest dust I’ve seen so far. This dust is finding the smallest gaps in the door seals and around the car to make it into the cabin, what a mess! In the end, we were amazed how far you can go in these conditions with a two-wheel-drive bus! Respect to you guys was fun to have you around! Of course, we had to pull them out a few times,but all of us were expecting worse! Further on in Zagora we were reunited with Daniels, Nadja, Alicia, Manu and Ilja in their Defenders for the last dessert section through Erg Chegaga and a dried-out lake to Foum Zguid. Great fun playing in the dunes!
From here, we will go west to explore the coast but that’s something for the next part.

Due to some complaints from some hotels and some environmental organisation, the authorities of the region of Errachidia, especially in Merzouga decided to remove all the comping tents that are located in the sand dunes of the sahara desert.. because those compings are producing a lot of wastes that polutes both the sand and the underground water.. The owners of the comps are frustrated and they appealed the decision, because they have many reservation from tourist wanting to spend the night inside the dunes and to enjoy the sunset, sunrise, sandboarding, quads and all the other activities.. Some of these reservations are months old.. What will happen in the future in the dunes and bivouacs nobody knows, but mane camping tents are already removed

Errachidia (Arabic: الرشيدية, in Berber: ⵉⵎⵜⵖⴻⵔⵏ, Imetgheren, used to be called in the past: Ksar Es-Souk and Ighrem n Ulzuz) is a city in the south east of Morocco, capital of the province of Errachidia, in the region of Drâa-Tafilalet.
Errachidia is located on the Ziz Valley, in the north of the province of Errachidia.
Formerly Ksar Es-Souk (Ighrem n Ulzuz, ⵉⵖⵔⴻⵎ ⵏ ⵓⵍⵣⵓⵣ in Berber), the city was renamed Er Rachidiya around 1975 in honor of the youngest son of Hassan II,Prince Rachid. It is part of the cities where the Alaoui (royal family) settled. A very large number of Alawis are still in this city.
The city of Errachidia is accessed by road through the national road 10. The city also has an airport that has flight from and to Casablanca. The city is divided into several urban areas in the form of neighborhoods. The districts of Errachidia are as follows:

3 Days Trip From Fez To Fez:

Day 1 : Fes Midelt Erfoud Merzouga Erg Chebbi.

we will pick you up at your Riad or your hotel around 8:00 a.m. We leave for Midelt through the Mountains and the cedar forests of the middle Atlas. We pass by Ifrane, a charming ski resort and Azrou, an important handicraft centre specialised in the work of cedar wood. We arrive in Midelt for lunch. At the afternoon we will drive to errachidia and to Erfoud and rissani to Merzouga to hotel into the desert. You will have a camel trek into the beautiful Erg Chebbi Dunes, where you will spend the evening in a bivouac (camp). There you will enjoy a Berber dinner, and sleep in traditional Nomad camel hair tent.

Day 2 : 4×4 Desert Safari Nomad Villages Black Desert.

After an early sunrise ,we ride the camels backing to Merzouga to hotel, take shower and the breakfast after We will drive to explore the tiny villages around Erg Chebbi dunes such as ( Hassi Labied, Merdani , Khamlia , Mfiss ) on our way to Khamlia we expect to meet locals showing their desert foxes. you may also encounter desert reptiles and mammals, in Khamlia, known as the village of black people who were slaves coming from Sudan,you will be hospitably welcomed with a cup of tea while enjoying their spiritual Gnawa music. Leaving Khamlia our next stop is on the panoramic view of golden dunes near the Algerian border, we may stop for Picnic lunch under the shadow of a tree before continuing to visit a Nomad family, who are living under Berber tent and who are taking care for herd of cattle, goats and camels, you will be introduced to family members and getting to know about their way of life while enjoying the taste of a nice cup of tea. After these you will have the chance to visit the sites of black volcanic rocks. continuing on, you’ll reach the panorama near Yasmina lac where you will be amazed with the scene of the dunes in addition to the nearby lake (springtime).then we will back to Merzouga, for dinner and accommodation in a traditional hotel.

Day 3 : Merzouga Erfoud Midelt Zaida Azrou Ifran Fes.

After breakfast in the hotel in merzouga we’ll start our tour backing to fes via erfoud for visit place for fossils,after we continue midelt . through the middle atlas mountains, visiting ziz Valley..midelt. zaida berber villages .azrou we stop where the wild monkeys are,.passing through Ifrane to arrive to fez.

We drove all the way from Fes to Rissani and had stopped over to Ifrane, Midelt, Errachidia, and Erfoud. We`ve spent 3 nights in Rissani and we had a wonderful tour in the city of Rissani and Merzouga. Then we visited the Dates Festival on our last day of stay in Rissani.

Aït Benhaddou (Berber: ⴰⵢⵜ ⵃⴰⴷⴷⵓ ; Arabic: آيت بن حدّو‎‎) is an ighrem (fortified village in English) (ksar in Arabic), along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-day Morocco. Most citizens attracted by the tourist trade live in more modern dwellings in a village on the other side of the river, although there are four families still living in the ancient village. Inside the walls of the ksar are half a dozen (Kasbahs) or merchants houses and other individual dwellings, and is a great example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture.

Marrakech is a city full of magic at the gates of the desert and at the foot of the Atlas mountain range, and is a real oasis where it is possible to experience the delight of all the senses.
It is a city divided by a Wall and within the walls you will find The Medina, the old town where you can find the Souk, the arabian market in which you can find absolutely anything. Outside you have Guéliz, the modern área, the heritage of the old French protectorate that was once long ago Marrakech.

Jemaa the Fna square is the heart that pumps life to The Medina. Every evening, after five o’clock, the Square changes its identity: the ambulant dentists, water sellers, snake charmers and the rest of the merchants disappear, and collective restaurants constituted by 60 stalls, open its doors. An environment of fair is created that accompanies the exhibition and get rid of halacas, ephemeral circles of bodies crowd round the halaiqui, which is a rudimentary musician, an acrobat or a reader of fairy stories, a complete art that has earned the Square inclusion in the list of Cultural Immaterial Patrimony of the UNESCO.
