Our day trip to the top of Volcano Etna Sicily Italy
Info from Wikipedia:
Mount Etna (Italian: Etna, Sicilian: Mungibeddu or a Muntagna, Latin:Aetna) is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, in theProvince of Catania, between Messina and Catania. It lies above the convergent plate margin between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate. It is the tallest active volcano on the European continent, currently 3,329 m (10,922 ft) high, though this varies with summit eruptions.Etna covers an area of 1,190 km2 (459 sq mi) with a basal circumference of 140 km. In Greek Mythology, the deadly monster Typhonwas trapped under this mountain by Zeus, the god of the sky and thunder and king of gods, and the forges of Hephaestus were said to also be located underneath it.
Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity. Due to its history of recent activity and nearby population, Mount Etna has been designated a Decade Volcano by the United Nations.[4] In June 2013, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Eruptions of Etna follow a variety of patterns. Most occur at the summit, where there are currently (as of 2008)five distinct craters—the Northeast Crater, the Voragine, the Bocca Nuova, and the Southeast Crater Complex (2). Other eruptions occur on the flanks, which have more than 300 vents ranging in size from small holes in the ground to large craters hundreds of metres across. Summit eruptions can be highly explosive and spectacular, but rarely threaten the inhabited areas around the volcano. In contrast, flank eruptions can occur down to a few hundred metres altitude, close to or even well within the inhabited areas. Numerous villages and small towns lie around or on cones of past flank eruptions.

This is how you get up to the first level, which is what we’re doing right now. In a few minutes, I’ll be able to show you some of the beautiful scenery around us. We’re at base camp right now. There’s already a lot of snow on the ground, that’s why we’re bundled up warmly.
We’re at stage two on the lift up to the volcano at Etna. There’s snow all around us at the moment. We’re basically up with the clouds right now.
As you can on the right hand side, what’s going to happen is now in about 15 minutes, we’re going to take off in these jeeps, which I’ll show you right now. Kind of an off-road version of the jeep. That’s going to take us up even higher. Right now, I believe we’re at 2,500 meters. In the next step, I don’t even know how high this is going to be, but it’s going to be pretty high.
Guys, I am at 9,000 feet right now, on the top of the crater. Actually, you can hear the wind going by. It’s crazy on top here. It’s extremely cold. I can’t feel my hands. The sun is still burning down, and actually we’re right above the cloud. Right behind me is the massive crater. One of the few that we’re allowed to actually go up to after the bus-stop by foot. I can’t even feel my mouth. It’s so cold up here now. I want you guys to go to see this.
Now, I’m inside of the crater. It’s just a really cool feeling to say, “Yes, I’ve been inside of the biggest volcano in Europe.” I still can’t feel my mouth very much. The wind is bitter cold on top up here.
We survived the volcano crater. Now, we’re back in the jeep and we’re going back down. I’m going to film a little bit of the drive down in the jeep, to give you an idea of what it’s like coming up Mount Etna by the jeep. Some people actually do it by foot. Crazy.
Okay, I hope you enjoyed my adventure up Mount Etna. If you like it, please give us a thumb’s up. If you love it, please share it. For more information on how you can experience Etna, check out the description below. Also, tune in next time for some more adventures with me across Italy. Ciao for now.

Sicily: Mount Etna, Taormina & Northeastern Sicily with Sarah Murdoch | Rick Steves Travel Talks
In this travel talk, Rick Steves' Europe co-author and tour guide Sarah Murdoch explains how Mount Etna — the still-active volcano simmering in Sicily's northeastern corner — gave rise to the island, and still dominates it today. We'll also drop in on the posh resort of Taormina, Catania — Sicily's gritty second city, with a good WWII museum — and the charming beach town of Cefalù.

Silvestri Craters at Mt Etna, Catania, Sicily, Italy
Mount Etna is Europe's highest and most active volcano. Towering above the city of Catania on the island of Sicily, it has been growing for about 500,000 years and is in the midst of a series of eruptions that began in 2001. It has experienced a variety of eruption styles, including violent explosions and voluminous lava flows. More than 25% of Sicily's population lives on Etna's slopes, and it is the main source of income for the island, both from agriculture (due to its rich volcanic soil) and tourism.

Taormina - Etna - Sicily - a sightseeing
The picturesque town of Taormina on the Italian island of Sicily is surrounded by the most beautiful landscapes on this planet. The surrounding scenery ranges from the nearby mainland of Italy to the ever smoking volcano Mount Etna. Taormina high above the sea on a rock offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and the wonderful coastline. You can visit the beautiful historic center for shopping and the many cultural sites. After a cable car ride down to the beach, you can refresh in the cool sea and if that's not enough, take a day trip to the near volcano, the ever active and over 3,200 meter high Mount Etna.
The most beautiful view of Mount Etna is from the Greco-Roman theater. But the panoramic view of the sea below is also incredible.
The Isola Bella and the surrounding beaches can be reached most comfortable with the cable car from Taormina down to Mazarò. The bathing suit and goggles should not be forgotten. The water is crystal clear and full of fish.
Recommended is a visit to the nearby Mount Etna. At least when not hidden by clouds. By cable car and mountain buses you can approach the active volcano. But dress warm. At 3,000 meters above sea level, it is cold and the weather can change quickly.
Mt. Etna erupting, Catania, Sicily, Italy, Europe
Mount Etna, or Etna, is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, in the Metropolitan City of Catania, between the cities of Messina and Catania. It lies above the convergent plate margin between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate. It is the highest active volcano in Europe outside the Caucasus. It is currently 3,326 m (10,912 ft) high, though this varies with summit eruptions. It is the highest peak in Italy south of the Alps. Etna covers an area of 1,190 km2 (459 sq mi) with a basal circumference of 140 km (87 miles). This makes it by far the largest of the three active volcanoes in Italy, being about two and a half times the height of the next largest, Mount Vesuvius. Only Mount Teide on Tenerife in the Canary Islands surpasses it in the whole of the European–North-African region west of the Black Sea. In Greek Mythology, the deadly monster Typhon was trapped under this mountain by Zeus, the god of the sky and thunder and king of gods, and the forges of Hephaestus were said to also be located underneath it. Mount Etna is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and is in an almost constant state of activity. The fertile volcanic soils support extensive agriculture, with vineyards and orchards spread across the lower slopes of the mountain and the broad Plain of Catania to the south. Due to its history of recent activity and nearby population, Mount Etna has been designated a Decade Volcano by the United Nations. In June 2013, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
