Treasures from Moscow: Icons from the Andrey Rublev Museum
A unique collection of icons from the Andrey Rublev's Museum of Early Russian Culture and Art risks being seized in the United States. Recently this collection was taken by the museum administration to a private U.S. museum founded by Gordon Lankton (on video). The Russian icons will remain in the U.S. until July 2011, the Rublev's Museum said on its website:
Such a conclusion was made from a speech by Russian Culture Minister Alexander Avdeyev on the Ekho Moskvy radio station, who said that as a result of U.S. claims to the Schneerson Library all Russian property not covered by diplomatic immunity could be seized in the U.S:
During the exhibition «Treasures from Moscow: Icons from the Andrey Rublev Museum» in Clinton in the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton (Mass) an iconographer David Clayton, artist in residence at Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in Merrimack (N.H.) has hosted Episode six 'Icons - the Art of the Heavenly Ideal' of 'The Way of Beauty'.

Rare Russian icons on display in Moscow
The Pushkin Museum has put together a rare collection of 130 religious icons dating from the 14th to 16th centuries, known as a golden age of religious art in Russia. It's only the third time an exhibition of this type has been brought together.
Auction house collection raises the curtain on life in Imperial and Soviet Russia
Families crowded by a riverside, waiting for a passing motor ship.
This painting by Vladimir Fedorovich Stozharov is just one of the many artworks now on show before auction at Sotheby's in London.
It's part of a collection of paintings which include some of the finest examples of twentieth century Russian artwork.
They also give a unique insight into life behind the Iron Curtain.
For some of these paintings, it is the first time they are up for auction on the open market as part of a two-day auction, which begins on Monday (June 2).
They're set to go to auction with various precious objects and ceramic sculptures on the 2 and 3 June 2014 in London.
Perhaps the star of the lot is this painting by Russian artist Alexander Deineka, named Young Designer.
He's considered to be a Giant of the Soviet art period.
It's one of his most famous mature works and described by some as his last significant achievement.
He died in 1969, just three years after making it.
The painting is owned by the International Confederation of Artists' Unions, an organisation which succeeded the Union of Artists of the USSR.
Along with the Ministry of Culture, they were one of the only bodies who were entitled to purchase works by artists during the Soviet period.
Over decades, they've amassed almost 50,000 items, creating a collection to rival almost any museum.
This is the first public auction that the Union has been involved with, and that makes it very exciting for experts like Frances Asquith, Head of Russian pictures at Sothebys.
Deineka, I would say, is the giant of the Soviet period and it's terribly rare to find any works of his in private collections in the West or in Russia, she says.
So, this is very exciting because it's the first time that the Union will be offering works publicly at auction.
The painting is valued between $3,350,000 - $5,030,000 USD.
Among other artworks set for auction is this painting named Children with Parasols by Aristarkh Lentulov.
It's been featured in major exhibitions across Russia and last appeared at auction 40 years ago.
There's also this painting named Kneading Dough by Mikhail Larionov.
It's considered to be one of the most significant paintings by the artist to remain in private hands.
This work on paper by Kazimir Malevich is also considered a prized item at auction.
It's a study for the artist's lost oil painting named Peasant Funeral.
It was one of several works Malevich exhibited in Berlin in 1927, all of which he was forced to leave behind when he returned to the Soviet Union.
Important pieces by Malevich appear at auction around only once a decade; therefore it's an exciting work for Asquith.
I would say it's the equivalent of Munch's Scream for us, she says.
In Russian art Malevich is as rare as you get and you could go mad hunting for one during your career, so we're terribly excited to have one in the evening sale.
Throughout the collection, paintings give an insight into the ordinary lives of Russians, be they queueing for bread rations or dressed in traditional scout uniform.
According to Asquith, this level of realism in painting was almost unheard of at the time, particularly in comparison to western artists.
A lot of these artists are quite undiscovered and unknown in the West; Deineka is one, Georgy Nissky is another, she says.
And they drew on a tradition of realism which you don't find in European 20th century art, to the same extent.
Asquith says Soviet art is a new area of the market, which now more collectors are turning to.
The auction will include a collection of rare and precious objects, which shine a light on Russian history and culture.
There's this gleaming Faberge gem-set silver casket.

Today he’s perhaps best known for his smooth-surfaced and sensuous abstract sculptures. On show at Hauser & Wirth till the beginning of November, “Arp: Master of 20th Century Sculpture” is the first solo exhibition of Arp’s works in China. It includes 28 works, including woodcuts, cardboard collages, drawings, wood reliefs, and – of course - sculptures.

Socialist realism
Socialist realism is a style of realistic art that was developed in the Soviet Union and became a dominant style in various other socialist countries. Socialist realism is characterized by the glorified depiction of communist values, such as the emancipation of the proletariat, in a realistic manner. Although related, it should not be confused with social realism, a broader type of art that realistically depicts subjects of social concern.
Socialist realism was the predominant form of art in the Soviet Union from its development in the early 1920s to its eventual fall from popularity in the late 1960s. While other countries have employed a prescribed canon of art, socialist realism in Russia persisted longer and was more restricted than elsewhere in Europe.

SUMMARY
=======
Socialist realism is a style of idealized realistic art that was developed in the Soviet Union and was imposed as the official style in that country between 1932 and 1988, as well as in other socialist countries after World War II. Socialist realism is characterized by the glorified depiction of communist values, such as the emancipation of the proletariat, by means of realistic imagery. Although related, it should not be confused with social realism, a type of art that realistically depicts subjects of social concern.Socialist realism was the predominant form of approved art in the Soviet Union from its development in the early 1920s to its eventual fall from official status beginning in the late 1960s until the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. While other countries have employed a prescribed canon of art, socialist realism in the Soviet Union persisted longer and was more restrictive than elsewhere in Europe.
