I spent 3 days in Lisbon Portugal and one of the places I visited was this Art Museum. I particularly enjoyed the biblically inspired Art and other cultural Art. There were some aspects of the Gallery I didn't like however, there's a lot inspiration to take from; for any type of artist/creative individual. They also had seasonal art exhibitions and overall it was a good experience. Hope you enjoy my short film and it inspires you to take a visit!

The EDP Foundation is proud to announce a new solo show by Portuguese urban artist Alexandre Farto AKA Vhils at the Electricity Museum in Lisbon, Portugal.
Dissection is the first solo exhibition by Vhils in a Portuguese mainstream art institution and his largest to date. This ambitious show will feature a new body of work conceived specifically for the museum's space.
Aiming to be an in-depth reflection on the urban space and its interrelationship with its inhabitants, Dissection takes as starting point various elements intrinsic to it. The artist's intention is to establish a progressive path through several purposefully built interconnected environments which enables the viewer to experience the passage from a dimension of noise, chaos and visual saturation -- expressing life in contemporary cities -- to a neutral setting where he intends to conduct a methodical dissection of familiar urban components with recourse to the unconventional media and destructive techniques which he has been exploring in his work.

The first thing you’ll notice upon entering the anatomical theatre at the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Medicine is the lone pickled head, up on a shelf next to a diaphonized hand. It’s yellow, peaceful-looking, and somewhat akin to a potato.

PORTUGAL: Statue Christ the King - viewpoint Almada /Lisbon
The Sanctuary of Christ the King (Portuguese: Santuário de Cristo Rei) is a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Lisbon situated in the city of Almada, Portugal.
It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, after the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited that monument.
The project was inaugurated on 17 May 1959, while Portugal was ruled by António de Oliveira Salazar who gave his final permission for the project. The giant statue in cement was erected to express gratitude that the Portuguese were spared the horrors and destruction of World War II.
In 1941 the land which was used to construct the monument was acquired. The construction project began in 1949 and took ten years to complete. But it was only in 1952 that the first construction started.
The first inauguration of the complex officially was on 17 May 1959. On the 25th anniversary of the Shrine in 1984, the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace was inaugurated. A new plan was approved to recondition the grounds of the Shrine and also to build a Sanctuary, which included a rectory, a chapel, administration and meeting halls and exhibition galleries.
In order to support pilgrimage to the site, in June 2004 new spaces in the Sanctuary building were inaugurated, including a dining room for 150 people and two segregated dormitories. This was followed on 17 May 2005, with the inauguration of a 150-person dining area and 80-person meeting hall, in addition to two segregated dormitories, dining room and kitchen.
Improvements to the monument and sanctuary of Christ the King began in 2006. By 17 May of that year, the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace was inaugurated. In the following year (17 May 2007), the Pope John XXIII hall was opened, containing eight oil paintings.

The monument was erected on an isolated clifftop 133 m above the sea, overlooking the Tagus River left bank.
It is the highest point in Almada, on a plateau dominated by the 25 de Abril Bridge, and close to the Estação Elevatória e Reservatório do Pragal.
It is accessible from Lisbon by car (over the 25 de Abril Bridge east of the crossing), by train through station in Pragal and by ferry over the Tagus, through the port of Cacilhas in Almada.
The monument consists of a trapezoidal pedestal of 82 metres (269 ft) height, formed by four arches and a flat platform, supporting the 28 metres (92 ft) image of Christ.
Its base was designed by architect António Lino in the form of a gate, while the statue of Christ the King was designed by sculptor Francisco Franco de Sousa.
The four arches of the pedestal are oriented in the directions of the compass rose. The figure of Christ, comparable to the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, forms a cross, with its arms extended out facing the city of Lisbon, as if to embrace the city. Due to issues of security and safety, the monument was sufficiently distanced from the cliffs on which it predominates.
At the base of the statue is the observation deck, at 82 metres (269 ft), which enables panoramic views of the city of Lisbon, the Tagus River and the 25 de Abril Bridge.
Under the statue, occupying a fifth of the pedestal's height, is the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace (Nossa Senhora da Paz) with an entrance from the northern facade. This space is distinctly different with its masonry stone, the northern facade surmounted by cross and the other facades containing narrow doors.
Inside two of the pillars is an elevator system with access to the terrace; the statue is 79.30 metres high, and overlooks the Tagus (192 metres above the river).
To the south of the monument is the Sanctuary building, comprising a rectangular body of three wings, with facades covered with masonry brick.

Ithaka was born and raised in Southern California, but later established himself in Japan, Greece, Portugal and Brazil (where the artist currently resides).
In Lisbon he recorded his first two hip hop albums, Flowers and the Color of Paint and Stellafly. His song, Escape From The City Of Angels appeared on the soundtrack for Columbia Pictures' feature release, The Replacement Killers.[1] Under the name Korvowrong, Ithaka was also the lyricist/vocalist on the track So Get Up by Underground Sound Of Lisbon.
Ithaka later returned to California where he recorded his third album called Somewhere South Of Somalia with producer Conley Abrams III. The lyrics from this album were written on a two month journey into east Africa.[2] Later Ithaka relocated his base to Rio de Janeiro where he recorded his two most recent albums, Recorded In Rio and Saltwater Nomad. In 2007, he briefly returned to Portugal to record with former Underground Sound of Lisbon member DJ Vibe, providing vocals and lyrics for the track You.
In addition to creating music, his short story series entitled, Fishdaddy Chronicles, has appeared in surfing magazines around the world including Surfer, The Surfer's Journal, Water and Transworld Surf[3]. In 2009, his short story Miracle At Malibu was published in the book entitled Surf Story, a collective volume of stories and surf culture compiled by Robb Havassy.[4]
His abstract photographic art and body of sculpture work known as The Reincarnation Of A Surfboard have been exhibited globally, his most recent solo showings were hosted by Gallery WOA (Way Of Arts) in Lisbon, Portugal in November 2007, The Camp in Costa Mesa, California in June 2010 and Gallery Alma Do Mar in São Paulo, Brazil in October 2010.[5]
At present the artist creates most of his works at Recanto Akahti, his small ranch in rural South America located on the edge of the Atlantic Rainforest in AkahtiLândia, Brazil.[6]
Contemporary artist, Ithaka, was born in 1966 near Los Angeles where he indulged in a cross-cultural pollination of both city and sea. He later established himself in Tokyo, Athens, Lisbon and finally Brazil - where he now resides.
He began his ongoing (200 piece +) sculpture series, THE REINCARNATION OF A SURFBOARD in 1989 after accidentally breaking one of his own surfboards in half, later restructuring and retexturing the destroyed board into a piece of wall-hanging sculpture. He has been constantly active with this medium ever since. His works have been exhibited in Europe, Asia, South America and the U.S. and featured in hundreds of magazines and television programs.
In 2006, a documentary written and directed by Susanna Lira called The Road To Ithaka won the BEST SCRIPT AWARD at the Brazilian FATU film festival. The film overviews all aspects of the artist's work, life and process in Rio de janeiro. He is represented globally by Gallery WOA (Way Of Arts) in Lisbon where his last major solo showing was hosted in late 2007-early 2008. His work has also been seen at the Museum of Image and Sound in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Jean-Luc Moulène / Culturgest / Lisbon, Portugal
How does photography deal with sculpture and vice-versa? Seeing the work of Jean-Luc Moulène from the middle 90s till now, it offers us a wide spectrum of thinking about this relation. Moulène is interested in the space between: photographing the consuming products from the non-existing country Palestine, the thirty-nine “Strike” objects which the workers produced during their period of strike or the “Les Filles d’Amsterdam”, portraiting their identity, their body and their working-tool. A catalogue is published by Culturgest on the occasion of the exhibition: Jean-Luc Moulène: Opus (1995-2007) Documents (1999-2007). The exhibition, curated by Miguel Wandschneider is to be seen until the November 25, 2007 at Culturgest, Lisbon / Portugal in the Gallery 2.

21st CENTURY RURAL MUSEUM by Cristina Rodrigues
The '21st Century Rural Museum' is a travelling exhibition bringing rural culture to major urban centres in countries undergoing a similar process of depopulation and desertification.
The second half of the 20th Century has brought a deep transformation to the way in which Portuguese rural territories are organised, particularly since 1986, when Portugal and Spain joined the European Union. The worst affected areas were Idanha-a-Nova and the surrounding boroughs which form the Raia, on the border with Spain, as their economies were sustained by agriculture and livestock. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) introduced a new scheme of organization for agricultural fields/production and how agricultural products could be traded within the EU. In the 1980's, agriculture in Portugal was still very rudimentary when compared to other European countries. The lack of an internal strategy to replan this economic sector, responsible for the biggest share of the country's GDP, resulted in the languishing of fields and people in the interior. It is mainly the elderly who stay behind and give continuity to traditions.
Cristina's research work has emerged from her own reflection on this stark reality and the local people. Most in Idanha-a-Nova are 65 or older and they are the ones preserving some of Portugal's oldest traditions. She believes it is crucial to record and document their cultural manifestations in order to prevent cultural genocide. And this has led her to created the '21st Century Rural Museum', a travelling exhibition bringing rural culture to major urban centres. This museum brings the unsophisticated voice of these generations into hectic and highly populated urban centres.
Since 2009 Cristina has been travelling regularly to a number of villages and small settlements in the Interior of Portugal. During these fieldtrips she has used photography as one of her main tools to capture moments in these people's daily lives and events. Her collection of photos entitled 'My Country Through Your Eyes' and photo installation entitled 'The People's Wall' are included in the '21st Century Rural Museum'. They illustrate the unbalanced demographics and how this affects Portugal's economy and environment.
In her own words, 'in the same way a body needs to be balanced in order to be healthy, a territory needs a balanced distribution of population in order to prosper'.

Body Worlds was created by German anatomist Gunther Von Hagens, inventor the plastination technique, a process that allows the long-lasting preservation of human bodies and body parts. This traveling exhibition has collected over 40 million visitors worldwide. Located in the Santo Stefano al Ponte monumental complex, just a few steps away from Ponte Vecchio, the Florence exhibition will be particularly focused on the motor of the cardiovascular system, the source of human life: the heart.
Relax, observe and don't let it get under your skin: you have until the 20th of March to visit this one-of-a-kind show.

The Cambridge School of Art, now part of Anglia Ruskin University, was
founded in 1858 by John Ruskin, renowned art critic, draughtsman, water-colourist and social thinker; it is now home to one of the most prestigious MA Illustration courses of international standing. Knowing that drawing - and life drawing in particular – is the most basic requirement for their students, two of its most feted tutors, Dr John Holder and Professor Martin Salisbury, decided that the students would benefit from a regular life drawing session – so Tuesday evenings at 6.30 pm in Room 211 became a sacred time for their students to draw from the human figure. It is well know that if you can draw the nude figure, you can draw anything.
So in 1989 POSERS came into being. We are now celebrating 30 years of meetings. This jokey acronym was invented by John and Martin and belies the serious nature of the group which meets year after year for this most important business. And it is not only students from the School of Art who are admitted – anyone may turn up, toss their fee into the hat and join in the fun. Our members are professional and amateur artists: illustrators, designers, architects, painters, sculptors…and anyone who simply enjoys drawing is welcome.
It is not strictly speaking a class – there is no instructor, and noone supervises or comments on the work, which is very liberating.
The POSERS coffers, with extra help from a generous anonymous Poser, contribute financial support to student field trips. These annual outings to Europe (Lisbon in Portugal is the current venue) are considered to be the highlight of the BA Illustration Course.
Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown Lisbon

Charles Correa Associates designed this research and diagnostic centre located in Lisbon. It is a state-of-the-art facility guided by some of the best scientist in the world. The site, where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean, is steeped in history. It is the site where Henry the Navigator, Vasco de Gama and other great Portuguese left on their journeys into the unknown—a perfect metaphor for the discoveries of contemporary science today. The 3 units that constitute the project are:
• the largest for the doctors and scientist,
• the second for the theatre, the exhibition hall, the foundation offices, etc,
• the third is an open-air amphitheatre for the city.
They have been arranged to create a 125m long pathway leading diagonally across the site, towards the open seas. This pathway is ramped up at a gentle slope of 1:20, so as you ascend, you see only sky ahead of you. At the end of the ramp are two stone monoliths, straight from the quarry. When you reach the highest point, you begin to see a large body of water, which seemingly connects (i.e. without any visual break) to the ocean beyond. In the centre of this water body, just below the surface of the water, is an oval shaped object—made of stainless steel and slightly convex, so that it reflects the blue sky and passing clouds above.
Beyond its scientific importance, the centre’s design has also caught the attention of architects around the world. The bid to design the site was won by Indian architect Charles Correa, who also designed the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Complex at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The centre features a large interior rainforest connecting clinics and laboratories, chemotherapy suites with gardens, and many areas open for public use, including exhibition halls, an outdoor amphitheatre and landscaped walking areas. It is hoped that the location of the centre in the heart of Lisbon, as well as the openness of the site to the public, will encourage awareness of the centre and the Champalimaud Foundation, as well as the health and medical issues that their work is aiming to address.

Web Summit 2019 took place the same as last year, from November 4th to November 7th at the Altice Arena & Fil in Lisbon, Portugal. The POSERS coffers, with extra help from a generous anonymous Poser, contribute financial support to student field trips. These annual outings to Europe (Lisbon in Portugal is the current venue) are considered to be the highlight of the BA Illustration Course.
So to celebrate this important anniversary an exhibition of current and past POSERS’ work will be on show in the Upper Gallery in the Ruskin Building from December 4th 2019 til 15th January 2020. An additional collection of work will be shown at the Posers’ favourite pub, the Six Bells, in Covent Garden (Cambridge!).
