Sopot Travel Guide | Day Trip from Gdansk, Poland
Come join us for our Sopot travel guide as we take a day trip from Gdansk to visit this popular seaside resort town located on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea in Eastern Pomerania of northern Poland.
Although many come to stay overnight in hotels, doing a day-trip from a nearby city such as Gdańsk might be your best best considering Sopot (Zoppot) is a little pricey in terms of restaurants and accommodations.
How can you spend the perfect day visiting Sopot? Our recommendation would be to to walk along the Sopot pier (Molo w Sopocie), take a boat ride (Pirate ship) and then enjoy hanging out around the main square and market while spending plenty of time at the beach in between ice creams and a leisurely lunch.

Sopot Travel Guide | Day Trip from Gdansk, Poland travel video transcript:
Today we’re taking you on a day trip to Sopot, a town whose name we hadn’t heard before visiting Gdańsk. Sopot is a beautiful seaside town that sits on the shores of the Baltic Sea, and it proved to be the perfect little day trip. Come join us as we explore the town, take a boat tour of the harbour, and find out what makes this destination a summer hotspot.
Tickets in hand. That was super easy. We got our tickets they were only 3.80 Zloty. Uh-huh. Yeah. That is less than a Euro so we are not spending much to get there. Ready for our day trip and our train is pulling into the station right now.
We have made it to Sopot. And I think the main attraction here it the pier. Uh huh. Isn't it the largest in Northern Europe? The largest wooden pier in all of Europe. That is the main thing we're going to do here.
So we made it to the pier and we actually had to buy tickets. You have to pay to go walk on the pier which I didn't realize you had to do. So it is 8 Zloty per person. Got our tickets.
At 511.5 meters, this is the longest wooden pier in all of Europe, and it’s the one attraction you can’t miss when you visit Sopot.
And look here. There are swans at the beach.
It is a beautiful beach day, the sun is out, blue skies and we can hear seagulls squawking off in the distance. It is just nice to be at the beach oh my gosh. I can't remember the last time I went to the beach.
Alright, update from Sopot. We came here thinking maybe we'll spend a couple of hours or maybe half a day but we are really liking it here. Really liking it. This is going to be a full day excursion. Yeah, so instead of just putting this in the Gdansk city guide this is going to be its own vlog. Own vlog. Well as you would know already because you would be watching the vlog but anyways we made a decision at this moment just so you know. We like it.
So Sam found us a Pirate Ship. A proper pirate boat.
That means we are ready to set sails. So we made it on the boat like barely. It was leaving within five minutes from us buying the tickets.
And how much was it? Was it thirty five Zloty?
So today is a really nice day to be out on the water. The waters are so calm it looks like glass.
Now we're going to explore a little bit more of the pier. And we've heard rumors of fish pierogi and we're hungry.
The restaurant we had read about online doesn't have fish pierogies. We found it but they don't have it on the menu so maybe they used to at one point but they don't right now.
The good news is that they do have baked pierogi and we've been wanting to try those for a while so we've ordered a whole bunch of like savory ones and sweet ones and we also have soup coming and salad. So it is going to be a really good meal.
So we somehow stumbled on a bodybuilding competition. And everyone looks super tan. Now let's check out the market.
As you may have noticed there are more people sunbathing than there were people swimming and that is because the baltic sea is refreshing.
That was a very busy outing and I think the verdict is we both loved Sopot.
This is part of our Travel in Poland video series showcasing Polish food, Polish culture and Polish cuisine.

Sopot - party capital of Poland or more
We spent a week in the Polish coastline and decided to make Sopot our holiday base. It's close to Gdansk so we could easily visit, but at the same time we were close to the beach, have forests to cycle, cheap accommodations and plenty of restaurants, bars and activities. That was our plan and apparently, a lot of people think so too as it's full packed of people, I don't remember seeing such a crowd lately on our travels as we did on our first afternoon there, a sea of people flooded the main street.
But don't worry as with other such places this is kind of limited to the town centre so if you walk a little further you will enjoy quiet soft sandy beaches and a nice family friendly atmosphere.
Things to do in Sopot Beach
Our favourites where:
Beach
There's no denying this is what the main attraction and the reason people consider visiting Sopot. It's a long, clean almost powdery sand beach, with lots of amenities. You can literally walk for miles or just sit on a beach cafe and enjoy the breeze while drinking a cocktail.
Forest walks
We loved walking around the parks and forests that make up the coastline. You'll find that there are many bicycle roads along the coast all of them perfectly maintained if you follow them at least. We took a detour and ended up having to push our bicycles through the sand.
Crooked house
One of the main attractions in Sopot and the building is quite interesting and worth a visit if you're in the area. Inside it's just a cafe and shops but the facade is quite funny and hard to resist paying a visit. At night you can find a nightclub here.
Church of St George(Kościół Garnizonowy pw. św. Jerzego)
This is surely the highlight of Sopot, nice architecture with great details situated in the heart of Sopot. Inside its impressive stained glass provides a shower of coloured lights that at the right time of day should be amazing.
Walk along Sopot's pier
Very long and one of the first places we went to while getting to know Sopot. We didn't actually go to the pier that day as you need to pay to go there, so we decided to visit when we used the boat to go to Gdansk. It's apparently the longest wooden pier in Europe not that the title makes any difference, the truth is walking on these wooden piers is quite enjoyable and somewhat romantic.
Bike tour
Spend an afternoon biking here and we loved it, it was a chance to take all the family to a couple of far away beaches while enjoying the forest trails. We did get lost and found ourselves cycling in the sand so make sure you follow the road.
Windsurf
We love watersports and wanted to try windsurfing here, in the end, we only managed to get one board as everything was booked but we can tell that the reason it was all booked is probably due to the cheap prices of rentals here. They have many water sports activities so you can certainly find something for you, just make sure you do book it early in the morning.
Sopot's lighthouse
I don't think I have ever seen a lighthouse like this, it's a beautiful tower that could be from a palace. The architect constructed a lighthouse and a viewing tower
as a way to conceal a chimney for the boiler that heated the spa waters, quite creative.
Gdansk and back
One of the reasons we chose Sopot was it's proximity to Gdansk that would allow us to visit the city but at the same time stay in a more relaxed environment. We went by train and returned by boat so it was not boring at all and allowed us to see things from land and sea. Gdanks is a must see if you are in the area of course, but you probably already know that.
Hel
Another popular destination, you can get there by train or boat if you are interested in visiting this peninsula. It's a nice small narrow place that makes an excellent day trip. The village is touristic but it makes for a nice walk around the picturesque houses.
Nightlife
Sopot seems to wake up at night. You'll find the streets crowded even late at night in the centre with plenty of bars and nightclubs to choose from.

Magdalena Abakanowicz
Magdalena Abakanowicz was born into an aristocratic Polish family. Her mother, who was Polish, had roots connected to the Polish nobility of ages past. Magdalena's father, who was of Polish, Russian, and Lipka Tatar ancestry which dated back to the great leader of the Mongolian tribe Abaka-Khan, fled Russia at the time of the October revolution. The Russian invasion of 1920 forced her family to flee their home, after which they moved to the city of Gdańsk. When she was nine Nazi Germany invaded and occupied Poland. Her family endured the war years living on the outskirts of Warsaw.
After the war and resulting Soviet occupation, the family moved to small city of Tczew near Gdańsk, in northern Poland, where they hoped to start a new life. Under Soviet control, the Polish government officially adopted Socialist realism as the only acceptable art form which should be pursued by artists. Originally conceived by Joseph Stalin in the 1930s, Socialist realism, in nature, had to be 'national in form' and 'socialist in content'.[1] Other art forms being practiced at the time in the West, such as Modernism, were culturally outlawed and heavily censored in all Eastern bloc nations, including Poland.
Abakanowicz completed part of her high school education in Tczew from 1945 to 1947, after which she went to Gdynia for two additional years of art school at the Liceum Sztuk Plastycznych w Gdyni. After her graduation from the Liceum in 1949, Abakanowicz attended the Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts, then located in the town of Sopot. In 1950, Abakanowicz moved back to Warsaw to begin her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, the leading art school in Poland.
Her years at the university, 1950--1954, coincided with some of the harshest assault made on art by the Soviet leadership. By utilizing the doctrine of 'Socialist realism', all art forms in Soviet occupied nations were forced to adhere to strict guidelines and limitations that subordinated the arts to the needs and demands of the State. Realist artistic depictions based on the national nineteenth-century academic tradition was the only the form of artistic expression advocated by in Poland at the time.[2] The Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, being the most important artistic institution in Poland, came under special scrutiny from the Ministry of Art and Culture, which administered all major decisions in the field at the time.[3]
Abakanowicz found the climate at the Academy to be highly rigid and overly conservative. She recalled:
I liked to draw, seeking the form by placing lines, one next to the other. The professor would come with an eraser in his hand and rub out every unnecessary line on my drawing, leaving a thin, dry contour. I hated him for it.[3]
While studying at the University she was required to take several textile design classes, learning the art of weaving, screen printing, and fiber design from instructors such as Anna Sledziewska, Eleonora Plutymska, and Maria Urbanowicz. These instructors and skills would greatly influence Abakanowicz's work, as well as other prominent Polish artists at the time

Julia Wieniawa - Nie muszę (Official Video)
Utwór „NIE MUSZĘ” zapowiada debiutancki album JULII WIENIAWY.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paweł Fabjański, reżyser o klipie do „Nie muszę”:
To współczesny love-song, zanurzony w płynnej rzeczywistości.

Global Journalist: Poland's declining democracy
Poland was once a model democracy in eastern Europe. Yet since 2015 when the populist Law and Justice party (PiS) won both the presidency and lower house of parliament, there have been big changes.
Law and Justice has sought to force out judges deemed unsympathetic, shunned refugees and chilled the independent press, while tapping into resentment of the country's political elite and the European Union. The moves have strained ties with the EU, which has begun a process that could lead to sanctions on Poland and even the loss of its voting rights in the European bloc.
On this edition of Global Journalist, a look at the challenges for democracy in Poland.

7. Wide of Tusk speaking to reporters
STORYLINE:
Poland failed to obtain assurances from Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Thursday that Russia would back off a threat to put Russian missiles near the Polish border.
But Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he was optimistic about the situation.
Putin met his Polish counterpart at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, amid tensions between the two neighbours over the missile issue and over Russian natural gas supplies.
The meeting came a day after a Russian military official reportedly said Moscow would back off its pledge to deploy missiles near Poland if the US followed through with plans to put a missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.
The Russian comments were reported by the Interfax news agency in a report the Kremlin distanced itself from, but that may have been aimed at testing US President Barack Obama's intent to build the shield.
After the meeting I think there were... I can be optimistic, more optimistic than before, Tusk said. I feel that this kind of issue is not the preferred option for Russia and it's hope. I'm not sure. It's hope. But I feel that Prime Minister Putin said very seriously that he wants to find other solutions, not this kind, near Poland.
The two prime ministers shared warm words at the start of the meeting and Putin accepted an invitation to come to Poland.

Newborns in Polish village have all been female for a decade
Birth rates are usually pretty even between the two genders. But that's not the case in the Polish village of Miejsce Odrzanskie, which is situated in the south-west of the country. There, in a rare biological anomaly which has stunned locals, the newborns have all been female for more than a decade.
