ISRAEL:MORDECHAI VANUNU REQUESTS MOVE FROM ISOLATION CELL
English/Nat
Mordechai Vanunu is asking an Israeli court to order him moved out of his isolation cell where he has been held for eight years for revealing details of Israel's nuclear program.
Vanunu, who is serving an 18-year term for treason, appeared in the Beer Sheba District Court on Tuesday for a hearing on the conditions of his imprisonment.
It was the first time that Vanunu, a former technician at Israel's nuclear reactor in Dimona, left his cell at Ashkelon Prison since his sentencing in 1988.
Dozens of journalists waited outside the courthouse, hoping for a glimpse of the former technician- turned-prisoner.
Mordechai Vanunu left his cell for the first time on Tuesday since he was first imprisoned in 1988.
Dozens of policemen sheltered the prisoner-dubbed traitor from the cameras, but APTV was able to get a quick close up of Vanunu.
The hearing was off limits to the press, and held behind closed doors.
In 1986, Vanunu gave The Sunday Times of London photographs he
took while working inside the Dimona reactor. Based on Vanunu's information, experts said Israel had about 100 nuclear bombs, which would have made it the sixth largest nuclear power at the time.
Israel never confirmed or denied its nuclear capability, saying only it would not be the first to introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East.
After The Times published its article, Vanunu was spirited to Israel by Mossad agents, secretly tried and convicted of treason. Vanunu has argued that he acted to prevent a nuclear holocaust - not for personal gain. Nevertheless, he was sentenced to 18 years at Ashkelon Prison in 1988.
But the conditions, he argues, are unbearable. Vanunu appeared at the Beer Sheba District Court to demand that he be removed from the isolation cell he has had to call home for the past eight years. He lives in the tiny room, equipped with a basic kitchen and shower.
Vanunu is serving an 18-year term for treason. This marks the first time that Vanunu, a former technician at Israel's nuclear reactor in Dimona has been able to leave his cell.
His only connection with the outer world is a small television set and dozens of books. His letters are always first read by a censor.
One of the few people that has been allowed to visit Vanunu in jail is the left wing parliament member Dedi Tzucker.
SOUNDBITE:
He's not allowed to see nobody, he's not allowed to accept nobody, he's in total confinement. When he's going out for a walk - he's walking alone in a very small yard, very close to his cell. The confinement is probably the harshest, the most difficult penalty he got.
SUPERCAPTION: Dedi Tzucker, Israeli parliament member
Israeli security argues Vanunu could share secrets if he shared a cell with other prisoners. Amnesty International has also called the conditions of the prisoner were cruel and inhumane.

STORYLINE:
Fatah supporters who fled into Israel from a deadly Hamas crackdown over the weekend, were gathered at an Israeli army base at Nahal Oz, southern Israel, on Sunday following the decision earlier in the day to send them back into the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile some of those injured in the attack were recuperating in Israeli hospitals.
The men, members of a Gaza clan linked to Fatah, escaped to Israel under fire on Saturday after a Hamas raid on their family's stronghold left nine people dead and nearly 90 wounded.
The violence, some of the worst infighting Gaza has seen since Hamas seized control in the territory a year ago, forced the Palestinians to seek refuge in Israel - their long-time enemy.
A group of around 30 was sent back to Gaza on Sunday morning, and Israeli defence officials said the rest would also be returned to Gaza rather than be allowed to relocate to the Fatah-controlled West Bank.
The officials said this was in keeping with a request from the moderate Palestinian president, Fatah's Mahmoud Abbas, to send the men back.
The wounded would be allowed to remain in Israeli hospitals, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the information had not been officially made public.
A political adviser to Abbas, said anyone wanted by Hamas would be allowed to remain in the West Bank for their safety, while the rest will be returned to their families and their homes.
A Hamas spokesman said Hamas had arrested the men who were sent back and would question them.

Election Harbingers at Israeli High School Predict Gantz Win
DAILY DOSE | In Israel, pollsters are urgently fine-tuning their models to predict who will win the elections. But one method of election forecasting has become a national institution. Mock elections at Blich High School, located outside of Tel Aviv, has a history of predicting major election results. Our Eylon Levy reports from the democratic carnival.
Story:
In Israel, pollsters are urgently fine-tuning their models to predict who will win the elections, but one method of election forecasting has become a national institution: mock elections at Blich High School outside Tel Aviv.
Just as the United States has Groundhog Day for the weather, Israel has Blich High School for the elections — a school that accurately predicted election results in 1977 and 1992, and has become a national superstition and tradition since.
Candidates from all the major parties pay a visit to the Tel Aviv school for a democratic carnival that serves as a good omen as they attempt to persuade that they have what it takes to carve a better future.
And the school’s snap election results were dramatic: the salient Blue & White alliance of Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz garnered an astonishing 47 percent of the vote in the mock elections — an absolute landslide victory.
Asked promise Blue & White has for the young generation, the former IDF chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi resolved ‘hope’.
The General who preceded Benny Gantz as chief of staff joined the Blue and White ticket at the same time that it announced the merger between Israel Resilience party, which boasts yet another general Moshe 'Bogie' Ya'alon, and media-man, former finance minister Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid.
Meanwhile, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party received 21 percent of the mock vote, roughly representative of its national vote share, but still less than half than the victorious Blue and White as the 13-year leader tries to stave off bribery and corruption charges ahead of the April 9th ballot box.
It seemed young people were less concerned with the establishment of a Palestinian state or making peace as the Labor Party earned less than 3 percent of vote, failing to make the minimum 3.25 percent vote share required to make into parliament, according to the school’s mock elections.
Labor’s weak performance came despite the presence of its party leader Avi Gabbay, who told young people ‘We offer peace, we offer social justice, and we offer hope,’ as well as candidate Meirav Michaeli’s promise for ‘genuine efforts for peace’.
Meretz swept past its left-wing rival with 10 percent of the vote, as Tamar Zandberg managed to gather votes on the basis of ‘Human rights, peace, social justice, equality. What else do you need?’ she asked rhetorically.
Alona Barkat who joined Israel’s Minister of Education Naftali Bennett and Minister of Justice Ayalet Shaked’s The New Right party, said that they were offering ‘real talk’, voicing its opposition to any kind of Palestinian state whatsover.
‘We believe that giving the Palestinians a country or a state is going to be a disaster for Israel,’ said Barkat, who became the first and only woman to own a football club in Israel when she bought Hapoel Beersheba in 2007 with the help of her husband Eli Barkat, a high-tech entrepreneur.

Nov 18, 2012: GAZA CITY — An Israeli bomb pummeled a home deep into the ground here Sunday afternoon, killing 11 people, including nine in three generations of a single family, in the deadliest single strike since the cross-border conflict between Israel and the militant faction Hamas escalated on Wednesday.

The airstrike, along with several others that killed civilians across this coastal territory and hit two media offices here — one of them used by Western TV networks — further indicated that Israel was striking a wider range of targets.
Gaza health officials reported that the number of people injured here had nearly doubled to 600 by day's end; the Palestinian death toll climbed to 70, including 20 children. Three Israelis have been killed and at least 79 wounded by continued rocket fire into southern Israel and as far north as Tel Aviv, as Israeli cities were paralyzed by an onslaught of relentless rocket fire out of Gaza for the fifth straight day.
In the Israeli strike on Sunday morning, it took emergency workers and a Caterpillar digger more than an hour to reveal the extent of the devastation under the two-story home of Jamal Dalu, a shop owner. Mr. Dalu was at a neighbor's when the blast wiped out nearly his entire family: His sister, wife, two daughters, daughter-in-law and four grandchildren ages 2 to 6 all perished under the rubble, along with two neighbors, an 18-year-old and his grandmother.
We were asleep and then there was a terrific blast, said Abdul-Latif Dahman, who lives nearby and was among more than 100 who stood vigil as the bodies were dug out. There are no words to describe what happened later, only smoke and dust and heavy silence because the sound shut our ears.
The smell of bomb residue and the roars of bulldozers filled the air as people clambered over shattered glass and bent iron bars to get a closer look. When two tiny bodies were finally found, rescuers and residents erupted in cries of God is great! One worker rushed the girl to an ambulance, while a neighbor grabbed the boy and just ran.
Ismail Haniyeh, the prime minister of the militant Hamas faction that rules Gaza, condemned the attack as a massacre that exceeded all expectations.
Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai, chief spokesman for the Israeli military, said it was examining the event.
The wanted target in this case was responsible for firing dozens of rockets into Israel, he added. I do not know what happened to him, but I do know that we are committed to the safety of the citizens of Israel.
Momentarily lulled by a quiet night, Israelis awoke Sunday to a new blitz of Palestinian rockets that totaled nearly 100 by nightfall, including two that soared toward the population center of Tel Aviv but were knocked out of the sky by the so-called Iron Dome missile defense system.
One rocket crashed through the roof of an apartment building in Ashkelon, a few miles up the coast from Gaza, where residents escaped serious injury because they had heeded the warning siren and run to lower floors. Four people were injured, two of them seriously, when a rocket exploded near their car in Ofakim, and a firefighter in Nachal Oz was seriously hurt by shrapnel.
A barrage of 10 missiles rained on Ashdod; nine were intercepted and the 10th hit an eight-story building but did not explode, heightening fears as residents were told to remain inside.
The whole region was paralyzed as people huddled in bomb shelters, where many have been spending the night. Malls were closed; few walked in the street.
I am the kind of person that always checks where the bathrooms and the exits are, said Carol Erdheim, a psychologist who lives in Ashdod and works in Ashkelon. Now you look for where the safe room is. You just know what to do. It is a way of living.
In Beersheba, an Israeli city of about 200,000 east of Gaza, Tal Rotem, a musician and father of three, said his family had not been leaving the house, not even to shop. A reservist in the Army's southern command, Mr. Rotem is one of those on standby.
My 5-year-old, Ori, said he did not want me to go because I could die, Mr. Rotem said.

Then God went up from him in the place where He talked with him. So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel. - Genesis 35:13-15
The first part of this video shows the outside entrance to “the place” mentioned in Genesis 35:13-14. The second part goes inside! Eli Shukron explains to our Living Passages archeological tour group an exciting new discovery. Shukron talks about how the standing stone is from the 8th century BC. It is found directly under the City of David archeological site that he spent much of his career working on. The site is also near the small town of Silwan. In other video’s you will see the nearby “streets” tying the City of David into the current day “Temple Mount”.
What an exciting find and opportunity to tie the platform, tunnels, Pool of Siloam, Temple Mount, water cisterns, Hezekiah’s Tunnel, and sifting project material together.

The Way of the Cross Keeps Us Close to Christ
Shepherd of the Hills Evangelical Lutheran Church
Old Testament Lesson: Genesis 28:10-17
Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He reached a certain place and spent the night there because the sun had set. He took one of the stones from the place, put it there at his head, and lay down in that place. And he dreamed: A stairway was set on the ground with its top reaching heaven, and God’s angels were going up and down on it. Yahweh was standing there beside him, saying, “I am Yahweh, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your offspring the land that you are now sleeping on. Your offspring will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out toward the west, the east, the north, and the south. All the peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. Look, I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go. I will bring you back to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” He was afraid and said, “What an awesome place this is! This is none other than the house of God. This is the gate of heaven.”
New Testament Lesson: Romans 5:1-11
Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We have also obtained access through Him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also rejoice in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope. This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For while we were still helpless, at the appointed moment, Christ died for the ungodly. For rarely will someone die for a just person—though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us! Much more then, since we have now been declared righteous by His blood, we will be saved through Him from wrath. For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by His life! And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We have now received this reconciliation through Him.
Gospel Lesson: Mark 8:31-38
Then He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, be killed, and rise after three days. He was openly talking about this. So Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. But turning around and looking at His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan, because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns, but man’s!” Summoning the crowd along with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone wants to be My follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me and the gospel will save it. For what does it benefit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his life? What can a man give in exchange for his life? For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

Hamas spokesman on Israeli retaliatory strikes following Gaza rocket attack
(17 Oct 2018) A Hamas spokesman said on Wednesday that Egypt has initiated contact with all sides, following the firing of a rocket from Gaza into southern Israel and the death of one Palestinian in subsequent Israeli military strikes on a suspected Hamas militant position, after days of rising tensions.
Denouncing the rocket firing, Hamas official Fawzi Barhoum called it a desperate an irresponsible attempt to thwart any national, regional, international or Egyptian effort that could achieve the ending of the blockage in Gaza and providing freedom and dignity to Gazans.
We are interested in making all efforts successful, in particular the Egyptian ones, to end the suffering of Gaza Strip and stopping all forms of aggression on our people, land and sacred places, he said.
Early on Wednesday morning, a rocket fired from Gaza struck a residential home in Beersheba, southern Israel.
The medical service said two residents were injured during the panic to seek cover, while a woman and her three children whose home was struck, were being treated for shock after they fled to their shelter upon being awoken by warning sirens shortly before 4 a.m. local (0100 GMT).
The Gaza Health Ministry said that a 25-year-old was killed inside one of the posts targeted by the subsequent Israeli airstrikes.
Three other people were wounded.
Earlier, in a rare move, seemingly aimed at easing the tensions, the joint coordination room of resistance factions, which includes Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other groups, issued a statement distancing themselves from the rocket fire.
The Israeli military, however, rejected the militants' denials, saying the rocket that struck Beersheba was a mid-range, locally produced weapon that was in the possession of only two groups: Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
Regardless of who fired it, a spokesman said, Israel holds Hamas responsible for all violence emanating from the territory it controls.
Hamas has held weekly border protests, referred to as the March of Return, for the past six months, aimed in part at easing a crippling Israeli-Egyptian blockade that was put in place after the Islamic militant group violently seized power in 2007.
The blockade has restricted Hamas' ability to govern and made life extremely difficult for Gaza's two million residents.
The protests have intensified as Egyptian-mediated cease-fire efforts faltered.
