Winsford and Exmoor, Somerset (1924)
Exmoor hunt and meet at Winsford.
This extract comes from Claude Friese-Greene's 'The Open Road' - originally filmed in 1925/6 and now re-edited and digitally restored by the BFI National Archive. Britain seen in colour for the first time was heralded as a great technical advance for the cinema audience - now we can view a much improved image, but one which still stays true to the principles of the colour process.
The rather haphazard journey from Land's End to John O'Groats creates a series of moving picture postcards. Look out for shots containing the component colours - red and blue-green - such as when a little girl in a red coat and hat walks among peacocks in the grounds of a castle, and three girls with red curly hair pose by the sea at Torquay.
The car is a Vauxhall D-type - considered a sporty model at the time. A long-distance journey by car was a relatively new concept, with none of the amenities en route now taken for granted. The visit to a petrol station shows smoking on the forecourt: no health and safety issues back then! The travelogue ends with a series of recognisable London landmarks. Much remains the same - one major exception being the volume of traffic on the roads. (Jan Faull)

The Exmoor Video
This VHS video was filmed over a year using, at the time, broadcast quality cameras to produce this 45 minute documentary. Exmoor is a beautiful place. In this film, we see wild red deer; peregrine falcons; wooded areas; cliffs and streams. There are also glimpses of rural life in this production.
Like all my uploads during the time I put the video on YouTube they are not available for general release. If anyone happens to know if this is now available on DVD please feel free to link the place of purchase. It is nice to show the respect who put the time and effort into making this film.

(HD) A drive across Exmoor. Bank Holiday Monday May 6th, 2013
))))))))))))))) Watch in 1080 Full Screen.(((((((((((((((((((((( Another 'Thru the Windscreen ' production. Unusually for a Bank Holiday Monday in May, we find wall to wall sunshine in our area. We decide to take a trip in The Peugeot 307CC with the roof down as it was our first opportunity since we bought it in January, hence the road noise. The first clip is driving down into Exford in the heart of Exmoor. The main part is the drive across what i have always called 'The Prairie' from outside Simonsbath to Watersmeet near Lynmouth on the B3223. We pass Exe Plain and Brendon common along this route. The last few clips are taken by chance as we popped-in to Morissons at Minehead for some supplies. Footage is of D2133 the class 03 Minehead Shunter moving the GWR Autocoach 178 in Minehead Station. We arrive at a time when we were in between train arrivals etc.so this was the only action available. .
Filmed on a Panasonic HC X800.
