Police: Boys Killed By Snake Died From Asphyxiation
Noah and Connor Barthe, the two boys apparently killed by a 100-pound African rock python in Canada, died from asphyxiation, according to preliminary autopsy results.
While we now have some preliminary information, investigators still have to wait for other test results to come back and for the final report, Sgt. Alain Tremblay of the New Brunswick Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Wednesday.
We recognize that this has touched the hearts of people across the world and that people want to know how this could have happened. Our investigators are looking at all aspects of this tragic incident, and that will take some time, he said.
Noah, 4, and Connor, 6, were found dead Monday morning. Sometime before dawn, the snake came crashing through the ceiling of the apartment where they were spending the night.
The apartment was the home of Jean-Claude Savoie, a family friend whose Campbellton, New Brunswick pet store was downstairs. Tremblay said the python was kept upstairs in a custom-built glass enclosure similar to an aquarium.
The cage reached the ceiling, and the snake was somehow able to crawl through a vent into the building's ductwork. It was above the living room, where the boys were sleeping, when the ceiling fell in.
The snake was found in the same room as the boys, Tremblay said. He would provide no further details. He said the RCMP is conducting a criminal investigation but wouldn't discuss possible charges.
Obviously, it's not a standard or regular case, he said. It's very traumatic for the family that this happened. But for the police, this is an investigation where there's a loss of life, and our approach to analyze a scene is almost identical, although here we're dealing with a reptile.
Canadian broadcaster CBC reported that the python was between 11 and nearly 15 feet long and weighed more than 99 pounds.
It was euthanized. The necropsy showed the snake was in good overall health, Tremblay said.
Deaths caused by large constrictor snakes like pythons are fairly rare.
The Humane Society documents 17 people who have died in incidents in the United States related to the snakes since 1978, 12 of them since 1990.
USA: NEW YORK: REPTILE RESCUE MAN
(29 Jun 2000) English/Nat
He's not your average pet shop boy.
Robert Shapiro, writer, T-shirt designer and animal lover, spends most of his time rescuing New York's wayward reptiles.
On an average week, his store in Manhattan may house up to 30 iguanas and 50 snakes, and an assortment of turtles and lizards.
Shapiro also finds homes for stray dogs, cats and rabbits, but concentrates on the cold-blooded creatures because, he says, they are the pets that are most mishandled and most misunderstood.
Located in the East Village area of new York's Manhattan, where residents are used to weird and wonderful neighbours, is 'Social Tees,' an unassuming T-shirt store that is also a refuge for a variety of reptiles.
The owner of the store, T-shirt designer Robert Shapiro, has a mission- finding homes for the creatures that are given up by their owners or found loose on the streets.
UPSOUND: (English)
Well, we're the proud owners of another iguana. We already have 31, why not one more? (Phone rings) Maybe that's 32.
SUPERCAPTION: Robert Shapiro, reptile rescuer owner
Shapiro says that many reptiles are sold by pet stores in New York to people who either don't know how to care for them, or grow tired, or even scared, of handling them.
Wrestling with this tame -and blind - West Nile Monitor lizard, Shapiro spent considerable time nursing the creature back to health after it's previous owner neglected and malnourished it.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
People throw them in fish tanks, don't know what temperature to keep them, don't know what to feed them, get bored of feeding them -some of these things try to bite them when they try to pick them up so they get tired of having them around at all and basically he was neglected when we got him, he's doing better now.
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Shapiro, reptile rescuer
At any time, Shapiro's store houses anywhere from a dozen to a hundred reptiles.
This 18 foot-long Burmese python was pregnant when it was brought to the store.
It's now fiercely guarding its 83 eggs.
Luckily for Shapiro, those 83 baby snakes already have homes to go to.
This small Chinese water dragon was brought in by its owner's parents, who were left stuck with the wily, sharp-toothed creature after their son went off to college.
Shapiro, a lifelong New Yorker who began his reptilian career more than 20 years, only has official permission to run a T-shirt store.
But he takes his chances, and he does it for love.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I like all animals, but reptiles seem to be very misunderstood and need a lot of help. They're sold in the pet industry and most people that buy them don't know how to take care of them.
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Shapiro, Store Owner, Reptile Rescuer
Every now and then, Shapiro himself goes out to rescue a snake or alligator - not unlike an urban 'Crocodile Dundee.'
Recently he came to the aid of Doctor Vicki Lanucelli, a psychotherapist, who came to realize that she could no longer feed her 10 foot long boa and python, without endangering her life.
(UPSOUND: (English)
That is definitely a 10 foot long Burmese python...where's the Boa?
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Shapiro, reptile rescuer
Although she was sad to see her pets go, Vicki knew that they would be better-fed by someone who was strong enough to handle them properly.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Since I'm alone, it's really hard for me to handle the Burmese because he's heavy and he's big. And, you know their feeding behavior is somewhat erratic so, I can't have pets like this if I'm afraid, you know, it doesn't work.
SUPER CAPTION: Doctor Vicki Lanucelli, snake owner
Rescues like this can take no more than ten minutes, but are not without danger and Shapiro takes no risks.
SOUNDBITE: (English)

Blanding's Turtles Hunting
Anthony, of theTurtleRoom.com, shares footage of his Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) project, that will be growing in a few weeks. These turtles have a great disposition, and due to their yellow chin and notched upper jaw, appear to always be smiling for the camera. This endangered reptile is often overlooked by hobbyists, and it's cold hardiness is among the strongest in the chelonian world. For more information on Blanding's Turtles (Emydoidea blandingii), check out Anthony's project page at theTurtleRoom.com:
The Blanding's Turtle, Emydoidea blandingii is a medium sized turtle that is considered to be an endangered species on the state level throughout much of its range. E. blandingii is native to Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec in Canada and Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and South Dakota in the United States. It can be identified by its bright yellow throat and chin and notched upper jaw, which gives the impression that the turtle is always smiling. The carapace is brown to black and is domed, but flat towards the top of the shell.
Emydoidea blandingii is evaluated by the IUCN Red List as Endangered, given extensive slow declines of most of its populations from habitat loss and direct removal, accidental mortality and increased predation, and its very long generation time of 36--47 years and slow rate of potential recovery. Blanding's Turtles do not grow quickly, taking upwards of two decades to mature in the wild. It is regarded as being one of the world's most cold tolerant and long lived animals. This longevity has partially been attributed to its decline in so many areas. Habitat destruction and segregation by humans, as well as road mortality and other factors, are a threat to have an even more serious affect on this species, since it can take adults so long to reach maturity. In addition, older specimens have been known to have better success in reproduction, so one mature female, especially an older specimen, lost on the roadway can be extremely harmful to a given population.
