Kasbah's in Agdz, Southern Morocco. Yep, that's spelled correctly. Ep. 9.
Agdz (pronounced Agdaz) is just 2km from the main road that takes tourists from Marrakesh & Ouarzazate to the desert. Yet few make the short detour to check it out. It seems a lack of attention has meant that Agdz has maintained an authentic aura to it.

M’Hamid is a small Sahara Desert village in the Zagora region of Morocco. M'hamid is one of the two places in Morocco where Sahara begins (another is Merzouga). M'Hamid is the real Sahara Desert and an the perfect place to have a Morocco Travel Sahara Trek and experience. M’Hamid is arguably more authentic part of the Sahara Desert.M’Hamid is just 7- 8 hours by car from Marrakesh and 5 hours from Ourzazate. The original name for M'hamid is Bounou, once a thriving village that evolved from a mix of local Ait Atta Berbers,Drawa, and Hassani tribes. There is a kasbah located 2Km away from the road that is inhabited by black Africans who came from Mali many years ago. Other than this, the main attraction are the Erg Chegaga dunes which are about 50Km from the town. The main attraction of M'Hamid is trips to desert, overnight or several day tours: by camel, 4x4, motor bike or a quad bike.

Ait Ben Haddou and Dades Gorge!
One of the popular things for tourists to do in Morocco is to experience the Sahara. Excursions to do just that can be purchased from Marrakesh and Fez. For just 1 night's stay in the desert, it is a 3 day trip so set aside some time.
My twin, Joe, and I were picked up in Marrakesh for the long journey. On the first day of our trip, the main stop we made was to the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a traditional earthen village that is hundreds of years old. It was one of the filming sites for many movies and series including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and Prince of Persia. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I've never really seen anything like it. The architecture and views were incredible. It is a true honor to experience something so unique and beautiful first-hand.
We ended the day by viewing Dades Gorge and staying in a hotel in the gorge.
Stay tuned for Day 2 of our Sahara adventure where we get to ride camels into the desert and stay overnight in a Bedouin encampment.

Ouarzazate Travel Guide - Morocco Joyful Experience
Ouarzazate Travel Guide - Morocco Joyful Experience
Ouarzazate nicknamed The door of the desert, is a city and capital of Ouarzazate Province in Drâa-Tafilalet region of south-central Morocco. Ouarzazate is at an elevation of 1,160 metres (3,810 ft) in the middle of a bare plateau south of the High Atlas Mountains. To the south of the town is the desert.
Ouarzazate is relatively small (~60 000 habitants) and, for Morocco, a quiet town, built mostly along the main street - Avenue Muhammed V. Ouarzazate is situated at an elevation of 1,135 metres. Its name comes from a Berber phrase meaning without noise or without confusion. In the past, Ouarzazate was a crossroad for African traders seeking to reach northern cities in Morocco and Europe. During the French period, Ouarzazate expanded considerably as a garrison town and administrative centre. It is the largest town in the Moroccan Sahara.
The town is chiefly inhabited by Berber-speakers, who constructed many of the prominent kasbahs (locally known as: iɣeṛman) and buildings for which the area is known. Ouarzazate is an important holiday destination in Morocco, as a base for excursions across the Draa Valley and into the desert. The fortified village (ksar) of Aït Benhaddou west of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Ouarzazate area is a noted film-making location, with Morocco's biggest studios inviting many international companies to work here. Films such as Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), The Living Daylights (1987), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Kundun (1997), Legionnaire (1998), Hanna (2011),The Hills Have Eyes (2006), and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011) were shot here, as was part of the TV series Game of Thrones.
For a long time, Ouarzazate was a small crossing point for African traders on their way to northern Morocco and Europe. During the French period, Ouarzazate expanded considerably as a garrison town, administrative centre and customs post. It is home to the kasbah of Taourirt, which was the casbah of the former caïd and later owned by T'hami El Glaoui. The Krupp field gun which secured Glaoui power is displayed outside the kasbah today. The area is also known for its Ouazguita carpets with geometric designs of red-orange on black background.
Ouarzazete has a hot desert climate (Köppen climate classification BWh). The city is hot and dry in summer, but can be very cold in winter, with icy winds coming from the High Atlas Mountains. The area around Mohammad V is very walkable. The CTM station is there as well. The red petit taxis for within the city have a flat rate of 4 dirhams a person from 6am-8pm, and 6 dirhams thereafter. Take advantage of these low rates to avoid walking any distance in the heat, and you will enjoy your experience better and have more energy for touring. Taxis to and from the airport usually cost 50 dirhams a person. The beige Mercedes grand taxis for between cities range in price.
Ouarzazate is a good base of operations for local touring. Most of what you want to see is not in Ouarzazate, but around it. You do not need to enter the centrally located Taourirt Kasbah, as it is empty, crumbling and unimpressive (and will overcharge you). You will get the very best impression of it from the street (for free). The kasbahs outside the city, such as Aït-Benhaddou, are far better. Spend your time planning day trips from the city, and you'll see what the city itself has to offer just by staying there, eating and passing through.
Many excursions through the valley of the Draa River into the Sahara start from the city. These include trips to Zagora, an oasis town surrounded by palm tree plantations and a departure point for camel trains to Timbuktu, a journey that would take about 52 days. These days the border to Algeria is closed, stopping the Timbuktu route.

Kasbahs of Skoura - Morocco
#morocco #skoura #andy1803
Skoura is for instance an oasis, a typical palm oasis, probably one of the widest in this area. The little settlement, 40 kilometres from Ouarzazate, lies south of High Atlas Mountains in the middle of Morocco. It is one of the villages along the “Road of One Thousand Kasbahs”. A part from the “palmeraie”, it is renowned for its well preserved Kasbahs, mainly the Kasbah Amridil and few others.
Skoura is an alternative stop in a round tour of Morocco. Perfect to visit Todra gorges and Draa Valley, it is itself an interesting location. Here you can see, far from crowds of tourist, well preserved traditional Kasbahs in their best setting. Some of them have been converted in hotels, like the Kasbah Ait Ben Moro shown in this film, an old building perfectly renewed. Others, like the most famous Kasbah Amridil, are accessible to visitors and offer a clear sample of traditional defensive architecture. In the south of Morocco these buildings, mostly seventeenth, played the same role of European noble castles as fortified houses for powerful rich families.
The Kasbah Amridil was built in seventeenth century. It is an open air museum, a guesthouse and the home of the owners at the same time. The old 50 Dirham bill shows on its back side the towers of this iconic building. Very nice is the exposition of typical Moroccan artifacts inside. From the top, moreover, a spectacular view of surrounding Skoura palm groves will open in front of you with snowy Atlas peaks just under the horizon.
Last but not least, take a walk inside the “palmeraie”, breath its pure air, meet its inhabitants and listen to their stories, discover old ruins and feel the vibes of the oasis. I’m sure this will be one of the most intensive experience of your journey. Don’t forget a compass for that, anyway, because loosing itself inside the “palmeraie” is quite easy.
Filmed late in March 2018, footage are mostly from my little Eken H8R. All photos are by Francesca Sparatore and her Nikon D3100. Cyberlink PowerDirector 15 for post-production and editing.
The track “Foreign Land” is by Jungle Punk and is available on YouTube Audio Library.

Aït Benhaddou (Berber: ⴰⵢⵜ ⵃⴰⴷⴷⵓ ; Arabic: آيت بن حدّو) is an ighrem (fortified village in English) (ksar in Arabic), along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-day Morocco. Most citizens attracted by the tourist trade live in more modern dwellings in a village on the other side of the river, although there are four families still living in the ancient village. Inside the walls of the ksar are half a dozen (Kasbahs) or merchants houses and other individual dwellings, and is a great example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture.
Aït Benhaddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 link:
Several films have been shot there, including:

TRAVELING MOROCCO [HD] // Amazing road trip through a beautiful part of Northern Africa!
... incl. Marrakesh, Ait Bouguemez, Cascades d'Ouzoud, Skoura Oasis, Draa Valley, Zagora, Erg Chegaga, Ait-Ben-Haddou, Taroudannt and Essaouira.
Morocco is a diverse gateway to Africa with epic mountain ranges, ancient cities, sweeping deserts, palm-fringed oases, good surfing conditions along the coast and warm hospitality. It’s easy to get around on public transport; nevertheless, in 2017 I decided to rent a car to be more flexible and to drive through the desert by myself. Enjoy! [chris]
